Not if you swap the USB's under the radio. That's what I chose to do anyways.

I have a 2015 Silverado with factory installed NAV. I have been thinking about upgrading in order to get the CarPlay feature for the past couple of months. I understand that I will need to upgrade the hardware in order to make this to happen. Can someone confirm for me please if I do upgrade will I lose the SD card function? I actually use my SD card much more than I ever thought I would. Thanks in advance.

Everything works great. I've had some time to play with it and can happily report that there hasn't been any issues. Loving CarPlay and how simple it is to use. Maps is awesome. Also, I gained HD radio with the upgrade, that's pretty cool!

 

The only downsides that I can think of:

- No steering wheel "Talk" or "hang up" controls while CarPlay is on (still works through Bluetooth when not plugged into CarPlay) Not a major deal but a tiny inconvenience. Definitely not a deal breaker. I actually found that enabling "hey Siri" on your phone works well. You can hit the mute button on the steering wheel and use "hey Siri" it works pretty good.

- Loss of pausing or rewinding live radio/xm. Again not a deal breaker for me as I rarely used this feature.

- Loss of aux in port and SD card slot in center console. New USB ports do not have these. This might be a big deal to some people, not so much for me.

I optd for jus true custom unlock. This unlocked the ability to play movies, use nav while driving and even receiving texts to my screen. All of these wouldn't work unless in park prior to.

 

Got mine installed. Learned real quick MVI will help you install the new module but good luck on trying to get info of resolutions and formats. After searching a while I came across a program called hand brake. With getting settings just right this is the only program you'll need.

 

Product works excellent. Everything is truly unlocked.

 

Now to see if there is a way of fast forwarding

New ports should be in today guys that will have the AUX-In added back in...was a nightmare to track down. Muddy...Text me and we can get one in route to you to swap out. As of now...new ports will not have SD card...GM doesn't even offer them, however...I'm going to look and see if we can be creative

I do have a silly simple question though....why not just transfer the content that's on the SD Card to a flash drive ?? Seems pretty simple anyway...but I'm not a I.T guy...LOL

 

This new system; in my opinion anyway....is the best GM has brought out in a long time. You will not be disappointed in this upgrade..its night and day different over the other. We will keep fine tuning things guys!!

I've had the upgrade for about a week and I LOVE IT!!! The speed alone is worth the upgrade. CarPlay is very cool, but Android Auto is even better, if only for the Google maps. Nav screen is instant, and the quick jump buttons are very cool.

 

I do kinda miss the pause/rewind feature, but the other features far outweigh that loss.

 

I told Anthony that I tested the new radio and HMI hardware with the old USB / SD adapter, and the SD card still works great; i.e. the programming is still there to support it.

 

Hopefully I get the new USB ports with the AUX input soon, and I'll try a little reverse engineering. I took apart the USB/SD card adapter and it has a standard USB shield controlling it. I found the schematics, so I'm going to try and see what the difference is.

 

Although not a deal killer, I really do miss the SD card!

 

And to your question Anthony, the main reason I prefer the SD over USB card is their speed over the USB drives. I put the same set list on a class 10 SD card and a new Patriot USB drive (32GB, 2.0). The radio read and indexed the music 4x faster (10 sec vs 40 sec). I also prefer the flush form factor and the data density you get from SD. But really, it's a trivial thing. And actually with the new hardware, the speed difference is probably non-existent.

 

I can't overstate how great MVI has been through the whole process!

Yes sir !! I was expecting them in today...Mother Nature had something different in mind though. Got about 15 inches in flat areas and 4-5 foot drifts in places. Gotta love a blizzard in spring....NOT.

Thank you for the clarification of the SD card...makes perfect sense. I have never really messed with them much to be honest. My guess is we can figure out how to retain it with enough creativity

Anyone using Android Auto with GS6 edge and unable to control the volume from the steering wheel? Recently did the upgrade in my 14 Sierra and everything works great but the volume buttons in android auto using steering wheel controls. My wifes Iphone works just fine but not my S6 edge. I don't have another Android phone to test yet.

Just completed this process and I really couldn't be happier. To put it plainly, this is the factory radio we expected in the 2014's but never got from GM.

 

Getting the order in to MVI was simple, and the unit was turned around to me and programmed within a couple of days. I wasn't in a rush since I wouldn't be able to get to installing the radio for over a week. "Slow" shipping across the country took 3 days.

 

The installation was exactly as described in the included instructions and video. My professional installer took just 40 minutes including reading the instructions. His feedback was that the "hardest" part was removing the upper and lower glove box to access the HMI unit. But hard was relative since the rest was so easy to do and perfectly documented by MVI.

 

The factory UX is snappy with no lag. HD radio is there as advertised. SiriusXM works once you swap the radio ID with them online. One of the missing features I was glad to see was the favorites buttons now auto-label for SiriusXM (you no longer need to manually enter the station name).

 

My setup uses Android Auto (Nexus 6P) - and yeah :-) i can't stop smiling. Getting AA going involves downloading the Android Auto app from the Play Store. Then connect your phone using the USB ports in your console. You will then be asked a series of setup question and permission requests (depending on your version of Android on your phone). The AA UX follows Google's design standards so if you are running Android you already know how to get around and navigate the UI. Before leaving the parking lot I was already streaming my Google Play "Thumbs Up" playlist. If you idle on GPM while streaming you get a full-screen experience with album background. Notification of messages peek down from the top of the UX. If you idle on the home screen, you get your current music playing and a good number of cards that you'd normally see in your Google Now stack. Google Maps is excellent, including showing active traffic. When in Google Maps screen notifications (including song changes from Google Play Music) peek down from the top of the screen. I also tested MLB.TV and Tune In Radio. Both worked perfectly. Couldn't be happier. The only thing to keep in mind is if you have an Android device that you a USB cable to connect to your phone. If you have a Nexus 6P make sure to use a "safe" USB Type-C cable that has been vetted by Google's Benson Leung so you don't end up frying your devices with a non-spec cable. http://drd.life/21TK8MD

 

The whole process from ordering to installation and use is great. I'd definitely recommend doing this for anyone who is finding their factory radio lacking (like I did) and without reservation I'd recommend MVI for their great service in putting this together. I couldn't be happier - thanks Anthony and MVI...
