Carb exempt cold air intake?

Just trying to find out if anyone knows of a carb exempt cai for the 2016 5.3. I am not having any luck finding one online, only one or two that say that the exemption is pending. If there isn't anything out there yet, would a cai that claims to fit the 2014/15 models fit the same? If nothing else I suppose i could get a non carb exempt cai & change it back to stock when the truck is due for a smog check, just wish I didn't have to play that game. The California smog crap here is a little over the top/ really limits aftermarket upgrades

It shouldnt matter for the time being. Keep your stock piece. You will not have to smog test until 6 years after first registration. So if you bought in 2016 you will not test until 2022

Just beware that if you get pulled over by CHP and they decide to do an inspection you'll be facing a major fine. And in some parts of this state they do random roadside SMOG checks that'll catch this. There is no such thing as a SMOG exempt CAI in this state, it must come with the CARB sticker.

I have yet to see a roadside done, and CHP who do random inspections, usually do so at massive car meets where it is mostly import

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't heard of the chp inspection. Would be bummed out to find out the hard way. No money to burn on fines. I know the swap back to the stock intake years down the road for the smog check would be quick. Haven't done any performance mods yet (would like to at least do exhaust & cai for now). Seeing some of the options out there for these trucks on this forum makes that list of things for the truck grow more & more.

NorCal member here as well, I feel the pain. I ended up going with the Airraid Modular Intake Tube. Since it retains the stock airbox with the factory emissions sticker on it, it would take an experienced eye to really catch the tube. Plus all the CAI tests I've seen, the MIT seems to do just as good if not better than the top end CAI's in terms of intake temperatures and HP figures. I have noticed a slight MPG bump and the growl gives it a bit more character when leaning into the throttle. Haven't run into a CHP SMOG stop or had to have it SMOGed yet so can't verify 100% my theory works. Guess I live dangerously breaking the law until the CARB catches me.

Seller just cancelled the order today. Said they can't ship the airaid mit to a CA address. I'll have to try something/ somewhere else.

I had to order mine off Amazon. Another place, can't remember which site, did the same thing to me the first time I tried to order. Either Anazon doesn't care or I got lucky. Good luck!

I have the full Airaid kit with CARB sticker for my 2014 6.2. I also have an open exhaust from my cutouts and every time I've been pulled over they never bother with that stuff. You could simply buy the 14 year kit but the sticker is for a 14 year truck. The 15 is not approved and the 16's kits have not been released yet.

More info on your cutouts?

Just get the Airaid M.I.T. tube and be done with it. From what I've seen, the tube alone with the stock air filter had just as good flow as an air intake kit. You keep the stock filter box assembly and it just changes that big ass block to a simple tube that goes from the MAF sensor to the TB.
