"Theft Attempt" DIC Message

What constitutes the DIC to display theft attempt? My truck was broken into last night and items were stolen. The police could not find any spots of force of entry so I have no idea how they got in. I went to remote start my vehicle and heard three honks and when I put the key in the ignition, it displayed "Theft Attempt." The truck was parked right in front of my house by my bedroom window and I do not remembering hearing any alarm?

 

I have always locked my vehicles but there is always a possibility the one time I forgot they got into it.

They are intercepting key fobs and simply opening the doors now. The Intercepted fob signal will open the door but it trips up the alarm system.

 

From what I've seen GM cars will let them in and not even sound the alarm it just keeps the ignition locked out.

I am starting to wonder if that happened because my brothers truck was not broke into but his was locked when we checked it. The others that were broken into were all unlocked.

I think that only works with keyless ignition systems that have proximity sensors. Our trucks do not. They would either have to spoof your remote or hack in some other way to unlock your doors.

While you are correct on what they are doing, the article you linked to isn't related to that. That article is specifically for vehicles where a keyfob in your possession allows you to open the door or start the car. The "power amplifier" the article discusses makes the vehicle think the keyfob is right nearby because the vehicles receiver is purposefully design to be low power to shrink the radius if can read a keyfob.

In our case, GM hasn't gotten up to that point yet tech wise on our trucks.

The 3 honks and "Theft Attempt" in the DIC indicates that the alarm had sounded and been reset. More likely the door was "slim jim'd" and the owner was a sound sleeper that didn't hear the alarm.

It would be more effective for it blare "Trump, Trump, Trump, etc......"

 

That seems to draw a crowd. Of course they might then trash your truck.

The more I keep hearing stories like this that our trucks are being broken into. Just makes my decision crystal clear.. haven't been leaving anything of value in the truck.. but what really sick I've always added a stereo system..but why gives potential thieves a good excuse to cause harm to ol betsy. Just another reminder to everyone. Try not to leave things of value in your truck.

This is about the best advice. The truck is parked within 10 feet of my bedroom window and I can't remember hearing it. I looked it over again last night and they are no marks what so ever of forced entry. I am going to do some testing this weekend leaving the truck unlocked for an hour and then trying the door to see what happens.

I've looked up and down and can't see any type of marks on the windows if they used one. Kind of hard to say but what is done is done. Lesson learned and I am putting in a dash cam this weekend.

I saw a report on the spoofing the remote problem and since I've been trying to remember to use the lock button on the door when exiting the truck in public places.

I read all these articles about how easy it is to break into the keyless entry vehicles and most if not all are BS. I've only seen description of a method that had any technical validity and it requires a good bit of equipment and being in proximity of the vehicle when the owner uses the key fob.
