5yr/60k warranty...why the drop

Can anyone give a factual reason as to why GM dropped their power train warranty on the 16 models to 5/60 and not 5/100

 

This is the first new vehicle I've bought and I was really expecting the 5/100.

They did it because they can, Chrysler dropped to 5/60 for 2016 and Ford has been 5/60 for a while.

 

5/100 is great if you put 20K miles a year on but most people dont so I dont think it affected sales much. You can always negotiate a GM extended warranty when you buy the truck if you put on a lot of miles. Or look for a leftover new '15, still a few around.

I may opt to get an extended warranty at some point. I don't normally keep one that long anyway

Excessive power train warranty claims. You really think GM cut the warranty because not enough people were making claims?

It is more incentive for owners to trade sooner . The old fear factor after warranty.....what if I have a lifter failure? Maybe a tranny failure? How about the old dreaded check engine ..limp mode and both lifter and tranny gone South!!! Damm this truck got 50,000 on it better trade it .lol

Mine has the 5/100, but 5/60 wouldn't bother me since I'd probably hit 5 years first anyways or I might hit both 5/60 right at the same time. You have to do a pretty good amount of driving to hit 100K miles before the 5 years. Also from what I've read on here, any powertrain problems have been well before the 60K mark. Might have been a couple that were right before 60K. I can't remember anybody on here having major powertrain issues between 60K and 100K. At least I don't remember. I wouldn't worry about it, 5/60 is roughly average with how many miles people put on their vehicles. Just like when looking for something used, the rule of thumb is that average miles is 12K per year old so that would make 5/60 about right.

I've had several vehicles with the 5/100 and now the new truck with the 5/60 and it didn't bother me one bit.

GM introduced the 5/100 when they were in the shit. Now that they are doing...well...better. They realize they can save some dough by lowering the warranty and get away from having to pay for that 98k transmission blowing out. Or the 85k engine blowing. etc etc.

If I could I would let any one of you have my warranty.... I couldn't care less about it and am voiding it to death lol.

 

It's all about dollars and being competitive...... they don't need the warranty to be competitive and it will cost GM less in the long run..... simple business.

What I read was that a study was done and it showed the longer warranty was not a major factor in the customer buying decision. Plus all the "Kids were doing it". Trust me, this is what drives big business policy decisions.

Exactly why they did it. Because a study was done and the warranty was not one of the major buying factors for people and not a "make it or break it" if it didn't have 100k warranty

I'm glad my '14 didn't end up totaled when I wrecked. I run around 25-30k miles a year and run vehicles to 100k minimum. So the 5 yr/100k warranty is nice for me.

When I was buying new pickups at the rate I was putting miles on them I would have hit the 5 year mark before the mileage so the warranty would have been a factor for me. When I'm paying $30k for a truck and financing it for five or six years it's nice to know that I have a warranty for or close to the life of the loan.
