Double Cab Child Seat??

Recommended Posts

So the Mrs. and I are looking at expanding our GM family soon and were curious about the fit of a child's seat in the double cab of the 2014+ Silverado/Sierra. We currently have a '14 Silverado Z71 double cab and love it, but we were wondering how tight the fit would be back there. Anyone have any suggestions/issues with fitting a child's seat back there? Thanks!

It is the exact same size as the previous generation "extended cab". I have one, and while not ideal, it is definitely do-able. Rear facing seats will have to go either in the front seat (with the airbag turned off!), or in the middle seat of the back bench. unless you and the Mrs' are really short or don't mind jamming your knees into the dash.

If the truck isn't the DD or the most used vehicle for the baby, you will be just fine.

There's a saying out there that goes something like this:

"If you wait until you think you're ready to have a baby, you never will."

Just work with what you got, no use changing something that work just fine. I have 3 daughters, and still have the truck.....

Double cab is a little small for the baby seat but it is doable - if nobody is comfortable in the front pass seat.

I just sold my brother a CREW cab for this exact reason, he wants worry free room for the baby seat....

I have a crew cab and the rear facing convertible toddler seat still touches the back of the front headrest.

those d&mn child seats are huge. Its going to be really tight in a double cab.

My wife is pregnant now and we are going to swing the other baby seat around to face forward when #2 is born. I can't have the rear facing child seat behind me and still drive safely.

I did it in my 2009 and it may have actually been easier with the large opening from the suicide doors. I have since upgraded to a Crew Cab, after I flipped my son around to face forward. It can definitely be done, but a pain when you're in a hurry.

Go to the local Wal-mart, Kmart, Babies R Us, etc. and pick out the car seat that the Mrs. wants and buy it. Then install it and see if it fits. Being that they make about 500 models of the car seat, each one will be different and there is not a correct universal answer to your question.

I had to go with a crew cab to fit the Diono's we have and the seat still presses against the headrest.

Crew all the way. I put my car seat in my dads double cab and it was ridiculous. I could barely get my shoulders in the door opening.

That's exactly why I'm driving a crew cab now. Lol!

Crew cab or Double, the safest place is in the middle of the seat. It sucks to have to reach over but if your ever in a side impact crash you will be glad you did.

As far as fit goes, it has to do with what kind of child seat you are going to use among a few other things. When I bought my LTZ Z71 Crew Cab, I was looking at a completely different truck. I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted a Sunset Orange Z71. Which, when I bought mine last October were very few and far between. I found a couple and was willing to drive several hundred miles to get it. It was a Double cab and not the Crew like I have now. I put off driving out to get it until I could get my wife and kids (two reasonably new born twins) to come and see how the rear facing child seats fit in the back seat of a Double. While they did fit, I am 6' so I put the driver seat back a decent amount. It was a very tight fit and honestly I wasn't comfortable in the drivers seat as it would have to be moved forward for their seat to fit. Suffice it to say, that ended my Sunset Orange Metallic 2015 pickup dreams. I bought a Black Crew cab instead.

I love my Crew now that I have it. My whole family fits in it (x2 car seats +another child in the back seat). While I do not normally have the car seats in the truck. I have the option in an emergency or if my wife is gone and I want to go to the store or something with them. I honestly feel I would be hating it in the Double given my circumstances. YMMV of course. But try them out at the dealer. Put the seats in, then everyone get it and see what you think. I would honestly take one for a test drive and load it all up and see how you like it. Worth the effort. My kids will be in seats for years to come. So I know I made the right choice with a crew.

My wife is pregnant and we have a 2014 GMC Sierra Double Cab. We bought the Chicco Key Fit 30 car seat. The only seat that it fits in is the middle one. It is doable, but not the easiest. I can't use the LATCH system, I have to use the seat belt.

I have that exact seat for my infant son. It fits easily in behind either seat and you can sit comfortably in my CC to give you a comparison. LATCH there of course.

I see now that this may not help as you weren't shopping for trucks you were asking about child seats in a DC.

Maybe it will benefit others who are shopping
