This week Chevrolet released a video highlighting the ZZ6 crate engine that GM-trucks covered last October. The ZZ6 has modern technology, but the old-school look many desire under the hood of a project vehicle. With a nice neat 405 hp and also ft-lbs of torque the ZZ6 is plenty for almost all retrofit applications. Check out the link above for the power and torque curves, or see them in the video. I there are any mechanical engineers of engine techs out there they will know exactly what RPM the peak torque and hp cross on the curve. It can only be one number. If you know that number guess it below in the comments before you look.

After owning the LS, I could never go back to a SBC/BBC again. Even in a hot rod....

don't blame you.

this must be for a special group.

I know every trick for SBC longevity, through real world torture.

...and some of it is not there on the LS.

Oh, the yo-yos of extremes.

it's like trying to erase a chaulk board for the same subject.

where is the engine for my "special" evolution?

I'll go to blueprint or somebody for the non-siamese iron.

I want that old fuel pump boss there .. but I won't use it for that.

and I'll stop talking now.

some of us are action anyway.

If I remember right, that number is 5252 RPM where they cross.

The 2018 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show is now underway and our own team is on the scene. Josh and Zane have started to build an image database and are taking close notes on what they are finding interesting and amazing. Our attention remains on the GM-focused products at the show, and there is a ton of good stuff coming in our reporting this week. Still, we can't help but wonder if anything will top the outrageous 1,000 hp HEMI crate engine Mopar dropped on day one.

Dubbed the Hellephant, the 426 supercharged engine develops 950 lb-ft of torque. The Hellcrate kit includes a powertrain control module (PCM), power distribution center, engine wiring harness, chassis harness, accelerator pedal, ground jumper, oxygen sensors, charge air temperature sensors, fuel pump control module and cam bus interface device. Optional will be Mopar's Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD) Kit, which includes an alternator, power-steering pump, belts, pulleys and more.

To show off the Hellephant in a vehicle Dodge opted to create a '68 "Super Charger."  “The 1968 Dodge Charger is one of the hottest classic cars, which is why we decided to use it as a starting point for the ‘Super Charger’ Concept. It’s an amazing vehicle and a great showcase for our ‘Hellephant’ engine," said Steve Beahm, Head of Parts & Service (Mopar) and Passenger Car Brands, FCA - North America. The custom widebody Charger uses a stock T-6060 manual six-speed Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat transmission to put the power down.

Pricing will be announced in Q1.

Chevy's latest V8 crate engine can handle boost of up to 15 psi. That means you can take this V8 and either supercharge or turbocharge it. Chevy says the curve below was from its LSX 376B15 engine without boost running 87 octane fuel. 450 ft-lb of torque and about 420 HP before you breathe on it.

Chevy says the engine started with the "...LS steel Bowtie standard-deck block, added a forged-steel crankshaft, forged rods, and forged pistons, then topped off the short-block assembly with high-flow, rectangular-port LSX-LS3 six-bolt aluminum heads for supercharged and turbocharged combinations." The $9,875 crate engine arrives without an intake manifold and no accessories. You built it up. For more information check out Chevy's infomercial on the engine. How would this short-block with a blower do in your dream build?
