Washer and dryer advice

Home Depot is having their largest appliance sale of the year right now......32% off all appliances, plus if you buy a pair (washer & dryer) you'll save another $50.

 

The guy a HD said that LG and Samsug are the brands with the least amount of repair history. I ended up buying a Samsung top loading washer and dryer ($549 & $479 after the discount) plus another $50 off of that.

Ended up with a Maytag pair from Lowes. In addition to the sale for Independence Day I also had a 10% off coupon. They installed them today. So far I'm impressed. Drying the second load now.

Sounds good. Good luck. If the washer starts to sound like a jet taking off, then I recommend you get the bearings checked before they go out. That is what happened to mine when it died.

I am in the market for a damn dryer. Our has been on the brink as of late. Going to go LG to match our washer we replaced 2 yrs ago.

LG is the way to go. Used to deliver appliances for Lowe's and the LG appliances were the least problematic. Hardly ever had to go back to swap them. Samsung used to be good but the quality seemed to drop as they gained popularity. Whirlpool and Maytag have been crap for years as they are basically the same internally. GE seemed to be even worse.

My brother and his wife recently purchased new GE units and they are very nice and perform awesome. Thought I would throw that out there for anyone else who might be considering.

 

My dear sweet old widowed mother and I use a Kenmore set she got back in 2004. While the dryer has been flawless, the washer has been repaired a total of 3 times, for the same issue- the drum stabilizer shocks kept snapping. They were plastic. Go figure. This last set though seems to be working much better, it's made it almost 5 years!

Our issue with 2 kids is we are constantly running our washer and dryer some days multiple times.

Sounds good. Good luck. If the washer starts to sound like a jet taking off, then I recommend you get the bearings checked before they go out. That is what happened to mine when it died.

 

After making this thread I realized I knew a guy who runs his own appliance store and the Bravos/Cabrio where what he recommended. He said he hasn't seen the bearing problem since some sort of redesign of the part. Regardless, I got the extended warranty.

The same person I mention above told me to skip the Korean brands because parts can be hard to get. Plus I wanted an American made product.

I bought the biggest ones available for a reason. Washer is 5.3 cu. ft. and dryer is 8.8 cu. ft. I shouldn't be traveling much anymore but previously when I did go out for a week my weekend would be literally all laundry with standard size machines. One load of work shirts, one of work pants, one or two loads of jeans, one of t-shirts and underwear and finally socks and bedding/towels. This thing can easily halve that load count. Plus if I manage to convince some gal to have kids with me I'll be set.

Our Maytag washer/dryer pair is over 30 years old and so far has needed 1 washer belt and the dryer a belt and new heating element. Pretty good service. But they aren't made the same now so I just hope never to need to replace the set.
