Good news. If it works , GM needs to apply the same fix to every truck that has been to a service centre with the same problem. Currently the whole process has been ad hoc at best.

I'm thinking I just need to replace my pitman and idler arm the moore I drive it, It's tight when I turn left and loose when I turn right, I think it's just the slack in the pitman arm. When the box was loose it probably wore out the pitman arm

Probably going to just order it and do it myself, by the time I take off time during the week to go down there it costs about the same. I had my retired father do it and he forgot to ask half the questions I had so they said it was fine and he left

I'll order the PISK kit also

IMO, that may be a partial fix. It's possible than the pitman shaft is worn excessively internally & there won't be enough adjustment on the "lash nut" to take up the internal slack. The pitman shaft was replaced on bro's truck & he said the steering afterwards was much better.

The good....steering is still holding great after 400 km. The bad...now having a bad shudder in the transmission when shifting from 4th to 5th gear only. Not happening all the time though and only occurs when driving on an incline and never on the flat. Also seems to surge ahead when downshifting to first gear just before coming to a complete stop. Brought it to the dealer and they couldn't get the truck to duplicate my complaint and it wasn't tossing any codes. Of course the very next morning after I pick it up it would do it twice...unreal! They told me to keep an eye on it and pop back to the dealer so they can take another look. I hope this is not any indication of how this truck is going to be. Only 11,000 km on the truck. So disappointed right now.

Hello. I have a 2016 Base model or work truck without the digital assist and I'm having issues as you all have been describing. I picked up my truck yesterday after 11 days waiting for the revised parts to come in. After 80 miles the 'pull' is back. My truck's steering wheel will spin out of my hand when I come to a stop about once every 40 miles. The tech said the truck was unsafe to drive 11 days ago after taking the truck from the service lane to the garage. I was put in a rental car.

I put another 60 or 70 miles on the truck today and it's slowly getting worse. When I left the dealer if felt great but that changed over the short period of time. I traded a perfectly good 2015 GMC 1500 in for the GMC 3500 and I'm regretting my decision. I lost my ass on the 1500 and now I'm not sure what to do. I feel the revised parts is not the solution to the problem. I had emissions issues at 500 miles, and other problems. My 1500 never saw the dealer and my 3500 has been in the shop 4 or 5 times now. Dealer has been supporting and I don't fault them.

I have 17,000 miles on the truck. Started about 1500 miles ago, the slop, and decided something was definitely wrong after the steering wheel was torn from my hand. Can't be any more obvious ☹️

For those looking to trade for a truck without digital assist, it's obviously not the digital assist. Don't waste your money.

So as mentioned I received my truck back yesterday and I can't tell if its worse now or before I took it in.

I just did a 100 mile drive on the highway and its the strangest thing. It goes from LOOSE 4-5 inches of play to HARD almost DIFFICULT to turn and then back to LOOSE.

Mine is the same way. Seems ok then starts acting up.

16 2500HD 8500 miles.

I had the latest TSB "D" done last week, which made the steering a little better but in no way did it fix the steering issue.

Truck is back at dealership, where I believe they're going to replace the steering box.

I've never in my life had a vehicle that drove this poorly, even after the pittman arm replacement you can still feel it clunking through the column when taking a turn, the wheel moves on its own when driving straight down a highway and yes I had a 4 wheel alignment done at Pittman replacement.

The steering wheel resistance at hwy speeds is not uniform, meaning at 70-80mph steering wheel at 12 0 clock position the SW resistance is that of a 1965 Cadillac coupe de ville, when trying to negotiate a gentle hwy turn the SW resistance is that of a non power steering diesel truck.

When they replaced the PA they took a picture of the spindle gear and it appeared to have been worn in half, I asked what the gear it mated with in the steering box looked like, they said good...evidently, that was some what of an exaggeration...

It would seem IMHO that GM is not stepping up to the plate (go figure) on this one, and letting the dealers take the fall. I don't think GM compensates the dealers equally for warranty work and it seems like they instruct them (dealer/service) to do the minimum and just see if that fixes it.

Very disappointed in GM!

I'll update when they get the steering box installed.

I had a new box put on and just had the pitman arm replaced. Drives good now, I think the idler needs to be replaced still though. There is a slight bit of play that would probably go unnoticed if i wasn't always focused on the steering like I am now

I believe when the lash nut back outs the box has a ton of play and wears out the pitman and ilder arms prematurely

I think I'll install the cognito PISK kit when the idler arm is replaced

Howdiy,

How many miles and which model year do you have?

Was the steering box, pitman arm and Idler installed under warranty?

I am also going to install the Cognito PISK kit, along with their 4" lift package, assuming or course that GM can get there act together and get this fixed...I don't think it's even or their radar right now and was a monetary decision by GM bean counters to let it slide...sad.

Truck is at dealer (again) pushing for a new steering box, asked if I should wait until they order one, svc replied we've got three here already...makes me think this is a regular occurrence for this model/year...

Everyone with these steering problems needs to file a complaint with GM and with their motor vehicle safety (federal body) so that the numbers of complaints justify an enquiry into this issue. Register and complain. These trucks aren't cheap, most are very new with low mileage and GM needs to come up with a solution and not some ad hoc short term fix.

12,500 now. Box replaced at I think 8000 or 9000? Yes everything was under warranty

The pitman and arm assembly is like 120 bucks, almost not even worth my time going there for warranty since I''ll be taking it apart anyways to put the pisk on

Mine is leaking now after the service bulletin that ends with 'D' was performed. I called the dealer and they said bring it back. Called GM and opened a case.

Somebody should post a poll and see who has the issue and who doesn't, by trim line. Since the digital assist isn't on the WT model, you might learn something from whether the people with WT's have the problem as frequently as LT/LTZ.
