I bought a 2016 2500HD Gas truck after having a 2014 1500. The steering was so sloppy and wandered so bad that I refused to drive it. Dealer had the truck 4x in 3 weeks. Their genius fix after 4 times plus 2 other non service visits and hours of conversations in email, phone and texts - too much air in the tires. Wow! It was never right. The dealer Courtesy Chevrolet in Phoenix Arizona was a nightmare - never buy anything new or used from them. Or go for service - but that's another story for another thread.

 

 

Traded it back in - ate some big bucks, and got a 2016 2500HD duramax cc LTZ, my dream truck. ZERO steering issues, wheel was tight and felt as good as my 2014 half ton. Until the 2nd week I had it and the power steering box started leaking terribly- as in puddle on the driveway. Took it to different dealer as the 1st on was horrible- and they had it for a few days.

 

Thy put me in a compact car loaner and said they couldn't get the part, GM had zero in Stock nationally, and they guessed it was being manufacturered but no ETA. They sealed the leak and gave me the truck back until the part come back in.

So I leave the dealer, guess what? The steering is sloppy. About 2-3 inches I can move the wheel left or right before it is responsive. It wanders and constantly has to be corrected. I move the wheel from 12 to 3 o'clock- the angle indicated on the DIC shows 1degree.

 

Everyone says "it's impossible" because it's a mechanical system. Until they drive it and they go "oh my I see what you are saying".

 

Meanwhile I have a $60,000 truck (plus a few thousand of negative equity on the gas truck) I worry about driving to work or towing to go camping this weekend while I wait for a power steering box from GM.

 

VERY frustrating.

 

I will add that this truck is spectacular otherwise- I hope they get this issue resolved for me.

i work at a gm dealership and yes there are issues with the steering, the gears to be specific so i feel your frustration those dealers should be hadling it better.

Class action is the only way to grab their attention. Everyone on these forums and anyone else out there experiencing this issue that hasn't found this site and others like it will hopefully come forth. GM is playing with lives and hard earned money. I know that Canada has a federal Transportation Dept but does the US that handles complaints of vehicle failure? It is gd shame that these new trucks have such problems.

A steering issue should definitely get the NHTSA's attention. I would think a class action is a much tougher row to hoe, so to speak.

The latest is metal flakes/pieces were found in the steering fluid and all parts that contain fluid have to be replaced. Maybe you all should check your fluid for metal particles. I guess the steering box issues caused parts of the gears to get sucked into the hydroboost pump which resulted in brake issues and steering issues.

 

This issue is extremely serious and I suggest you all check your fluid.

Sounds like what I've been thinking, premature wear of the sector/pitman shaft. Is Delphi still the vendor/supplier for GM's steering gear?

Well shit this thread took off....lol

I posted the TSB earlier back on the first page. I had to pay to get it from an online source as my dealer said they were not allowed to let customers see it as it wasnt a TSB but an internal memo from GM

That was rev. C After reading the 300+ post I see a Rev. D is out now.

Mine started at 7500 miles. literally right after the first oil change.

They replaced my gear box, took 2 weeks but this was back in sept. and the part number was the same

Also mine if a Flint truck as well

Im at 12k now and the steering seems to be holding up good so far. I guess I need to check for flakes in the fluid now. sheesh.,

This is my dream truck, my 3rd chevy truck and this by far is looking to be an issue until GM actually fixes the problem. The issue of mine was GM was still in the questioning tryinbg to figure out the issue stage, seems they may still be there

Mine steers easy at idling speeds/parking lot

 

Intown driving it's firm and I like it

 

55 to 65 mph it's loose and I find I'm constantly trying to correct the wheel position to keep going straight

 

70 to 80mph it's tight again and I like it

 

I have 4700 miles

This sounds a lot like mine. And I am thinking this is the Digital steering assist, at least on mine. At highway speeds, the steering is "vague" and likes to wander around. It is not much, but it is there. I think it is the steering assist trying to "assist" you with the crosswinds and the crown of the road. Of course none of that is staying consistent, so you are correcting for the road, and what it thinks needs to be done. When I am towing (10K pounds), it is better, but that correcting the corrections drives me nuts.

 

If there was a way to disable mine, I would. Bet a lot of the steering woes would go away.

I just had the last TSB done and it drives better than when I bought it. Just picked it up at 1000, I hope it will stay that way.

2016 Highcountry 2500, 5th trip to the dealer is complete, changed out the pitman arm, no success. Still drifts while driving, not much slop, but it drifts back and forth. I am sick of this. Calling the service manager on Monday to see what the next step is, does anyone know if a 2015 steering box will fit on a 2016?

Did they replace the pitman arm or shaft? Two different parts. On bro's truck the shaft (internal part) was replaced. Steering is better.

When the internal shaft is worn it also wears out the external pitman arm and the idler arm. I'm dealing with this now. I have a new box but still have a little play due to the wear in the pitman and idler arms

So i got my truck back and it seems great thankfully ! They had it 5days. Its hard to read the work receipt but they did bulletin D which may or may not include these parts also listed on the sheet , Pitman arm, shaft, gear , front end alignment. There was no charge. I had no steering from 11-1 on wheel. I have 100 miles since pick up and all seems fine. I am going to check my power steering fluid for metal.

Just completed a 2k run and am exhausted from correcting the steering. GD thing wanders like a camel. With a diesel on the front end, it isn't fun. Steering wheel seems to enjoy the left side and rarely needs right while on highway. I feel that the only time that this truck is sensible is when driving at low speed, within town. I'm about ready to sell it or trade it. GM will not do anything but what it is made to do for folks with problems with these trucks.

Forgot to mention vibration through the gas pedal.. Gas pedal is like a pulse push. Not sure if it has anything to do with steering, perhaps the whole truck is beginning to come unglued. I thought about how this vehicle will feel at 40k or 60k.

    • Oil pump noise was discussed before.  I will try to remember to record a remote start later this morning. 
    • There are probably a few threads talking about fuel mileage but this one seemed to fit the stats I have seen based on my typical local driven route but with different outcomes based on different seasons/temperatures. I have a few hundred pounds of items that consistently ride on the truck at all times such as a bak flip cover, rubber bed mat, tools and extra fuel so I would be something over 8100 lb without me in the truck. All these examples are based on a 100 mile round trip to a town plus running around town so maybe 110 to 120 miles in total for a trip. Using regular fuel and I assume it always has some ethanol in it but don't know the percentage they blend in. Also speed wise I am going at 62 mph and non aggressive driving although less speed yet if its crappy winter condition roads. I am going by an initial reset of the computer generated fuel use numbers averaged over a couple of thousand miles or so for each weather/season so they may be more optimistic then actual hand calculated numbers. Basically this is painting a picture of doing the same drive but seasonal conditions and temperature being the major variable to the end result. Oh and although I am in Alberta Canada, I am converting it to miles per US gallon so there is no confusion.    So winter time it gets cold here, no real surprise there and the roads can be clear at times but also often have packed rough snow or are are driving through loose snow ( they do a poor job of plowing the highways ) and yes this includes the extra idle engine time due to trying not to freeze ones butt off. 12.7 mpg is what I was getting during the winter months on average.    Then during the spring when it was around the freezing point and the highways are clear of snow, I was getting around 14.25 mpg.   Summer time, I have been getting around 15.15 on average but certainly some of the trips showed quite a bit better fuel mileage, so much depended on how much or little I had driven around town and number of engine restarts after sitting for a while at each location. But stating a best fuel mileage trip to town pretending that is what the truck gets on average is fooling ones self for sure !.      As I said in a different post, I had driven a 645 mile trip over a couple of days stint to a different destination then these other daily to town examples above, and was done during the summer with nice weather and not bucking a head wind, also keeping at 62 mph and its a rolling landscape type highway drive ( this isn't southern Alberta or Saskatchewan flat lands ) Hand calculated fuel mileage in this case though and it came out to 17.65
