I am still confused how going from blue to white will help a paint chip problem but I guess they may show less? Sounds like you drive too close to other vehicles on the wrong roads IMO. Call me a dick but if someone is riding my ass I will intentionally touch the shoulder of the road so I pick up and spit out some rocks.

 

I am personally not a fan of those clear bras and am sad when I see a real nice car with it on, especially after a couple years it really stands out. In reality painting a hood is fairly cheap and can be done every few years easy. I would put clear plasti-dip on the front if it was an issue personally, at least then you can just peel it off and reapply yourself in an afternoon every year or 2. Plastidip would definitely hold up to rocks and debris just lay it on thick.

 

You aren't a fan of a near invisible clear bra that actually lets the clear shine of the factory paint through but you are a fan of going cheap with a $20 can of spray on clear that looks like hazy crap compared to the factory paint? Ok, have fun with that....

 

You do realize that they have long 5+ year warranties on them and won't yellow or if they do are covered under warranty. Not to mention new ones are self healing from scratches. Only problem is they are kinda pricey.

Nope they are garbage IMO. That will not yellow/self healing is complete BS line. I have never seen a clear bra that did not stand out like a sore thumb. As you mention expensive right? Well it is only like $200 to paint a hood (maybe not at your dealer but I guarantee there is a dude in your town on craigslist that will do it at that price). Paint is all in the prep and the hood comes right off minimal prep no masking. Could even be done at home if you have the compressor and HLVP gun and even a little knowledge. It is just a large flat (mostly) flat surface, does not take a paint pro with 25 year experience and thousand of dollars in equipment to do that.

I wouldn't trust anyone on CL to paint my truck for $200. I'd rather get out of those Maaco or Earl Schrief $199 paint job specials. Anyways, my clear bra has been on going 3 years no yellowing. What's more of an issue is dirt getting trapped under the edges.

That dude on craigslist is the same dude that will be doing it at Maaco during the week/day just charging you +200%. The guys who have this equipment/setup are usually the ones that work in the field or have. It is JUST a hood. Heck no dont take your whole car to a someones garage / house to paint it but a hood is so easy it is not funny. Hell for an extra $100 he might even be able to air brush a badass eagle or flag or boobs if that is your thing. It is just a flat surface big whoop IMO.

 

*one of best mechanics I used for years did all the work out of his own garage but he was not a chump had good setup and just his one of his big tool chest was probably worth as much as my truck.

The front end of the trucks is not the problem a clear horse shit bra will not fix the problem when paint is flaking off on tail gates and doors and bed sides adressing the real problem the paint have GM vehicles my whole life from 86 Kroc to 99 1500 to 2007 2500 and never have seen such piss poor paint in my life rock chips happen yes understand but when your truck has 8000 miles on it like mine and has more paint chips than my 07 there's something wrong

Unfortunately the hood is not where the majority of paint chips happen, it's the grill, bumper, both fenders and A pillars. You're not going to find a hack on CL willing to do that for $200. Removing those pieces, sanding and prepping...now your talking $$.

Look not really trying to argue, pointing out the facts.

 

IMO painted bumper yea that does kinda suck but if you can afford the price tag of a high end model .... well you get the idea. The whole plastic valance yea that takes 5 mins to take off, extra 50$ to paint that. Bumper maybe 20 mins top to remove but sure would increase the cost a bit. From someone who has had the whole front of his truck taken apart and did it 100% solo. It is pretty damn easy and take a 15Torx and 7mm rachet. The grill is laughable easy once you have the valence off. Seriously about 30 seconds if you use a 10mm on a power tool. Putting things back together is even easier it all just snaps back into place and bolts to hold it. Just for reference there are more bolts total holding that lower air diffuser onto your bumper than there are holding the entire front end of your truck on. Was on the 15's anyway and not even joking took as long to take that off as the entire rest of the front end because the dang bolts are upside down and you have to use a mini ratchet tool or small wrench and do it a 1/4 turn at a time.

 

My point is there ARE options and it is not some precious thing that needs to be covered in plastic and look like junk just my opinion. If you are too afraid to touch your truck by all means don't, fear leads to failure.

 

* That same 'hack' is likely the same dude that will do it in the shop anyway and just trying to make some extra dough like we all are to get ahead. Sure if you show up and he pulls out some spray cans bolt but if tells you 'yea I been painting cars for X years' and you see his paint gear all nice he probably knows a heck of a lot more than you or I.

I've had my truck 2.5 years. I has the whole front end covered with a good quality clear bra...leading edge of the hood, fenders, valance trim above the bumper, both a pillars, leading edge of the roof, headlights and door cups for $870. No way in two years am I getting that all repainted with a quality job for that price whether at a body shop or through some luck finding a person on CL to do it on the cheap. It's not about how easy it is to tear apart the whole front end, and it sure isn't about how easy it is for a novice to paint a hood. It's about spending your time everytime your OCD kicks in to have to spend more time having your truck repainted; or simply I don't want to paint my truck every year as don't most people. If you think a clear bra looks bad, how about the front of your truck looking like it was sandblasted after every winter? Sorry, but that's just stupid to think repainting your truck everytime the front gets chipped is a better option, or plati derping your whole front end is classier than apply paint protection from the get go. Sorry, but even the chrome bumper chips and rusts, that's not getting fixed for less than the price to have it covered with a clear bra either.

I swear by Xpel Ultimate... I've had someone scrape the front bumper of my Avalanche - could have sworn I needed to repaint the entire thing, until I peeled the clear bra off. NOT A SINGLE SCRATCH to the bumper - the Xpel Ultimate took the entire brunt of the scrape. That piece of clear bra cost $100-150, can't tell me painting it would be nearly as cheap.

 

Don't give me crap about 'if you can afford a $50-60k truck then you can afford to paint it.' That's just BS. Take care of the $50-60k truck and be proud of what you own. Or be a hillbilly and say 'a truck is a truck so you should treat it like one.'

I bought a 2016 deep ocean blue z71 crew cab loved the truck! I personally feel the deep ocean blue might be the best looking paint on these new trucks BUT after having the truck two months paint chips started Showing up everywhere so I contacted the dealer I buy from told him I would be interested in buying a white z71 if my payment wouldn't go up too much sooo he calls me back found me a white z71 crew cab with black leather heated seats (which my other didn't have" chrome 20's (which my other one didn't have" true navigation with weather radar built in (which my other truck didn't have" payment went up 18.00 bucks I felt like I couldn't pass it up so now I own a white one

Smart move - well worth it for the built in 8" Nav, wheels, leather and most importantly peace of mind not worrying about the next chips.

Nice truck! I would advise against a clear bra because over time, they can cause some serious paint damage. Looks like a nice upgrade for $18 more a month!
