grade braking

Hello all,

I recently got a 2016 silverado. After reading the manual (imagine that) I see that it had grade braking ( or whatever they call it). My Honda ridgeline had it and it was called grade logic transmission and it worked fine.

Back to my issue. First couple of times going downhill it kicked in and worked as expected. Then one time it came on and had the word dismiss over the heading. I didn't need the assist so I hit dismiss. Since that time the grade braking has never worked again. I have gone down some steep hills where I would like the function to work. I have used the brakes the way the manual states. I have tried to hold the trailer button for 5 seconds. The heading will come up to dimiss the braking and then I hold the button for 5 seconds and it comes to enable the brake assist. But it does not work when going downhill.

Anybody got a little help for me?

Thanks KC

I agree ^

The "dismiss" is just to clear the message so you can see your regular display. the grade braking is supposed to return to normal next time you start the truck I believe.

After you turn it off and back on, the next time it engages, a message pops up telling you its active. I still haven't figured out exactly when it will kick in, it surprises me every time.

Well I guess that's what I get for not reading my manual.

I don't have the max trailering package but I definitely can feel some sort of grade braking going on... even in my subdivision and it bugs the crap out of me.

It's a long slight grade from the front of the subdivision back to where we are a half a mile away. If I leave it in drive it just goes down the hill I don't even need the brakes to turn in the driveway the trucks going so slow and slow. I mean it'll run less than 20 miles an hour more like less than 15. Oh and it will stay in 4-cylinder mode as long as you let it do whatever it does.

Soon as you pop it up into neutral it goes to V8 and it coasts smoothly down the hill. It also says it's getting much better fuel mileage when it's downshifting and going slower than just idling and cruising down through there 30~35 miles an hour, go figure.

It seems to be setup to come on when the truck detects a certain degree of grade and the brake is held on for a few seconds. It would be interesting to see the logic that they programmed in. It does come on very quickly when in tow haul mode. I rather like it and have gotten used to it especially when towing a trailer it seems to save the brake pads. seems to work a bit better in this 2016 than my previous 2014 truck

My 16 grade braking activated on a steep 55 mph hill, was not in tow/haul. hasnt come on since. My father's 14 came on every time he stopped for a while after he had his leer cap installed. i think the extra weight made it think he was carrying a load. pulled the battery cable for a minute, and it seemed to reset itself.
