Low Fuel Light

The distance to empty is not very accurate unless the truck is sitting level, it is based off of the same float in the gas tank that your fuel gauge is connected to. I drive off road quite a bit for my job and if your on a steep down hill incline my work truck will start saying I am empty and the DTE changes as well.

My wife learned the hard way not to trust the distance to empty figures after running out of gas with 11 miles or so remaining on her 2009 Acadia. I get nervous well before the light comes on.

Same thing happened to us with an old Cadillac. I appreciate the low fuel warning but do not depend on it to tell me when to fill up. I consider filling up when I get below half a tank so I don't find myself having to fill up at an inconvenient time.

Having a young son (3 years old) we never let our tanks go below half a tank.

Numerous times I have had to drive someone last minute and don't want to have to worry about gas.

Not to mention, snow in Northern Ontario, sometimes you're stuck on the highway due to an accident for "hours" at a time.

So, I always keep 1/2 tank + in my 16 SLT AT and wife's 13 Explorer Limited.

Oh, when the weather gets bad, I keep it topped off. But that's only once or twice a year down here in Texas.

I say go test it and run it empty. Report back and let the rest of us know so we don't make the same mistake.

LOL! 4-5 months out of the year here! During cold weather months, it's never below 1/2 tank. I've yet to see the low fuel light go off on my truck.

Twas just axing as in my prior vehicle, '04 Dodge/Cummins, I could easily run 60 miles or so after the DTE read 0!!!!

tons of cushion built into this computer if you have/need to keep driving after Low comes on. I normally get the light with 4 gallons left, that's 15% of tank, at least 50-60 miles left. May not be ideal, but sometimes things happen and you need to know when worried to be about it.

I have had a couple times were the "distance to empty" was less than 150, went down a hill on Edwards AFB (same hill each time), and the numbers tumbled to ZERO by the time I hit the bottom. Only once have I seen it roll back up to what was left, the other times it gave me the "YOU'RE OUT OF GAS, GO GET SOME!!!" message. Even after restarting it, knowing that I had over 100 miles of gas left, was the "GO GET GAS!!!" message was still there.

OnStar is keeping a record of how many times you allow your vehicles low fuel light come on. The credit card companies buy this data and it is part of Your FICO score, it shows if you are a responsible citizen or not. Hahahaha just kidding BUT AM I????
