steveo2155 Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 Going to be looking for a car to drive at least 3-4 days a week approx 40 - 50 miles a day round trip. Prefer less than 100,000 miles and in the 5-8k $ range, cheaper the better but still reliable at least for a few years. Id like it to get at least 35-40 hwy mpg. Jetta tdi? What years to stay away from with the jetta? Golf tdi? Chevy cruze? Civic? Im open for any suggestions not just gm.
Daryl LBZ Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 My Cruze is a nice car, but I don't know how you feel about a turbo charged gas car? Maybe a Civic would be a good fit? They seem reliable.
SnakeEyeSS Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 ^ Japanese compacts are big sellers for a reason. Mazda 3 gets 40 and is fun to drive(I have had two new Mazda's and both were reliable), corollas are very reliable and worlds best selling car, and the civic is in between the two former.
muddkatt Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 Avoid the Nissan line up, they have transmission issues with their CVT automatics.
steveo2155 Posted August 14, 2016 Author Posted August 14, 2016 What mpg does your cruze get? Anyone know much about early 2000 vw jetta or golf tdi??
Colossus Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 2011+ Impala. Though it will not quite get 40 MPG it still gets up into the 30s at 65-75MPH. 305HP V6, 6-Speed tranny, both major steps above the pre-2011 models. Also consider the 2012+ Malibu. Good car. As for the imports, you'll be getting higher millage and more worn out cars for the price range- Avoid KIA and Hyundai as the cars int he price range you are looking at will likely be pre-2012 models which have REAL shitty reliability, vs the just shitty reliability the 2012+ have. Nothing wrong with a well maintained Jetta TDI (don't go smaller than a Jetta, trust me) older Cruze models are ok too as long as they have been maintained. Avoid anything Chrysler. Ford Fusion, Hocus Focus, & Taurus are ok if well maintained.
Beer Belly Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 Avoid the Nissan line up, they have transmission issues with their CVT automatics. Fingers crossed that we got a good one. Leased a 2014 Maxima with the plan to buy it out if she still likes it after 3 years.....just rolled 8,700 miles....too soon to tell if there will be issues
KARNUT Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 Hyundai cars are reliable and inexpensive used. I have an Elantra that's ten years old a Geneses that's five years old, had a Geneses coup for three years traded that for a Santa Fe that I use for my hobby, Uber that I put 50K miles on this year. When I go in for service most people say it's the best they've owned. My wife never kept a car for 5 years before and can chose any car she wants. You should check out used mustangs too good gas miliage and hold up well.
KARNUT Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 I listen to a local car show on the radio here in Texas, the say great cars as long as you don't keep them pass 100K the transmission fail soon after. Fingers crossed that we got a good one. Leased a 2014 Maxima with the plan to buy it out if she still likes it after 3 years.....just rolled 8,700 miles....too soon to tell if there will be issues
white1500 Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 We have a 2011 nissan versa that has given absolutely zero issues after 75k miles. It's an inline four paired with a fun 6mt that can easily get up to 40mpg if we cruise at or below 75mph. It's not fast by any means but a cheap, efficient, and reliable commuter doesn't need to be. I really enjoy driving it since it's so light and compact, and parking is always a breeze (just like the truck...). Sent from my SM-G360V using Tapatalk
KMGZ400 Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 I have a Cruze Eco manual that has 100k on it, easily gets 40MPG on the highway, lifetime average is 33MPG. Been a really good car other then the fact that it eats front rotors. You can pick them up cheap used
Daryl LBZ Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 What mpg does your cruze get? Anyone know much about early 2000 vw jetta or golf tdi??Before I switched from 16" rims to 18" I was averaging close to 36mpg. Now I average 33, but I also don't drive it very slow either.
Colossus Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Nissan got the CVT issues ironed out. If you're in a 2012+ model I'd feel safe. Just do the gear box fluid changes frequently though, is the advice I hear from the experts, due to most CVTs regardless of make having small boxes which means they get dirty sooner.
Colossus Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 FYI I've driven a few Altima's and Maxima's and Sentra's as rentals over the past few years, liked each of em. Although I do believe Nissan is catering these vehicles more towards the women of the world as they tend to be styled more girilish.. if you will forgive that term. And it is mostly women I see driving them so it is working!
white1500 Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 My mother in law has a 2016 Nissan rogue with a CVT and I love driving it, and its really efficient. On B roads I was comfortably going up to 10mph faster than I would have been in the truck, especially with passengers. Although I still need to check that we can fit an adult in between the two car seats but its a contender for our next family car. Sent from my SM-G360V using Tapatalk
