Any Recommendations for Toolboxes (Black)

Hey Folks,

Probably a stupid question---but do bed-mounted tool boxes tend to attract thiefs? I'm thinking of buying one inside my bed that is secure and that lays a bit under the radar. My 2017 Silverado is black, so something in a black might be a good option. Any suggestions?

I had something like this in mind...but it might not be too practical.

Regards,

John

I guess you can't do what I did and just have a cross tool box. It's just 2 screws on each side holding it to the rails. But, it's also very heavy so even if someone was able to rip it off of the rails it would be too heavy for even just 2-3 people to handle and I don't think they would try to pry it open. Had the same normal cross bed toolbox on my '98 the whole time I had it ('04-'14) and never had a problem with someone messing with my toolbox.

Plus I guess it's good that the guy that lives beside me just recently became a Sheriff's Deputy so the squad car is a pretty good deterrent lol.

I had boxes on my C10 and my Ranger. I never worried about theft unless I was going to leave it unattended for a while.

The undercover boxes are great for essentials, but they don't hold as much as a regular toolbox. I would suggest going to look at one first.

It all depends on how much storage you need.

If you don't mind a bigger box, I would go that route. If I didn't have a lot of stuff to haul around, I would get a swingcase.

Here's the deal: If someone is so motivated and wants in your toolbox, tonneau cover, cab or engine bay, they can easily do it.

The old saying, "Locks keep the honest folks out." is true enough.

Now, do your due diligence. Don't make it easy on them or tempt them. Get a good quality tool box that meets your needs and keep it locked. About the best you can do.

A month ago, I got me a very nice tool box from Lowe's. It is made by Better Built but has the Kobalt brand on it. It is one of the best out there. I really like it and find it to be as secure as can be short of adding padlocks to the sides.

I forgot to mention that all I've ever had is UWS toolboxes and never had a problem. My '98 even had a UWS when I bought it used in '04 and it was still on there when I got rid of the truck in '14 with no problems. The one on my '14 is the first black on I got and so far after the 2 years and 4 months the finish is still holding up great.

I got one from Northern Tool, built by better built just like the ones at Lowe's but I like the big handles on mine compared to the handles on the other boxes they had available. Got it on sale for 280 this time last year. It's pretty solid but, like said above, if a criminal wanted to get into something, they'll find the means to do so

I too like the handles on mine. I previously had a Delta low profile box, black powder coat. Had to be replaced under warranty once because the black paint started to flake off. Didn't have paint issues with the replacement. However- I can say that the build quality is 10 times better on the better built/kobalt vs Delta.
