5 month old 2016 with 3300 miles, pulling a 5500lb camper up to the camp site yesterday, got the "Service 4WD" on the dash. The selector knob was in "Auto" and the truck proceeded to lock itself in to 4WD. Got to the camp site with a lot of hopping and screeching, Pulled battery overnight but she's still stuck. No light on selector knob unless it's in Auto.

 

We are 150 miles from home and on a week long vacation pulling this camper around.

 

I read up a bit and figured I would either pull the actuator and manually shift the tcase into 2hi, or pull the front driveshaft.

 

Got up early this morning. Decided to try the actuator first. But as I loosened the bolts and started to wiggle it out, I noticed that there is some kind of rotational spring pressure on it, as well as some oii started dripping, so for those 2 reasons I bolted it back up.

 

Moved to the front driveshaft. Got it disconnected from the front yoke, but the rear is held to the tcase with a sealed on boot, crimped on with metal rings. Didnt want to destroy that so I bolted the driveshaft back up.

 

Is there any other way to manually disengage the front axle just for the week until I can get back home and have the dealer check it out?

Had the exact same thing happen.

 

All I had to do was pull the 4x4 fuse until I got into the dealer the next day. System went into 2x by default without the fuse in.

 

New fuse and no problems since.

The truck is a 2016. I honestly didn't realize it was in Auto. I will definitely make sure to leave it in 2Hi because I know Auto leaves the Tcase in 4WD and just disengages the front clutches.

 

I pulled the 30A J-Case fuse in position 6 under the hood, was labeled 4WD something or other, not the TCM. I think it's the line that must enegrize the coil on the AWD clutches. With this fuse pulled, I still am in AWD on the dash and I still get the "Service 4WD" message as well as "Service Stabilitrak" now, but the front axle is free.

This happened to me today and after hours of trying different procedures with no luck I finally got the truck out of 4wd auto. I first put it in neutral applied the parking brake and kept the ignition in the run position. Then I pulled the fuse under the hood #6 marked 4wd trec, it was a 30amp square fuse and then reinstalled it. The truck seems to work correctly now and will never forget to make sure it's in the 2wd position when I turn it off. Hope this helps others

I had similar problems, changed these items in this order with no help. Shift motor, diff actuator, switch on dash. My son had been driving thru slush and puddles(for awhile). I disconnected the shift motor plug and receptacle, one pin was corroded from water intrusion. I made my own harness from salvaged connectors because they cost WAYYYY too

much ANYWHERE else. Problem fixed, When you slice new harness, make sure 100% it is sealed from the environment. I used commercial aircraft grade environmental splices, works like a champ, just takes some patience. Good luck.....

I had the same problem at 700 miles took it to the dealer turned out it was a bad acuator they changed it and fixed the problem. Wasn't charged because it was part of the warranty

I just had the same issue happen to my wife's 2016 suburban on the tail end of getting back home from a 4 hour highway trip. I tried reverse, switching to 4wd in neutral, etc but nothing worked. Only 16k miles so drove it to the dealer for repair.

 

Reading this board this sounds like a common issue. Wonder if a recall is in order to get them all fixed?

I had similar problems, changed these items in this order with no help. Shift motor, diff actuator, switch on dash. My son had been driving thru slush and puddles(for awhile). I disconnected the shift motor plug and receptacle, one pin was corroded from water intrusion. I made my own harness from salvaged connectors because they cost WAYYYY too

Re: corroded pin in the connector. There's an article addressing this issue posted on missing water seals in the transfer case connector on 15-17 trucks, suggests replacement of the shift motor in addition to the harness. Might be a good idea to check it out next time under the truck

A '16 stuck in 4WD with DTC C0398?....not surprising.......seems there is a problem with the transfer module software in 15s and 16s Silverados and Sierras and the fix is to update the software or replace and program a new module if old one cannot be properly programmed. Dealer's have been (not a recall or TSB but something called a TAG #N152028770, 1/17 .) notified to examine and make changes if necessary to vehicles brought in for routine maintenance. So it appears if you don't go to the dealer or the dealer is unaware, your SOL if it screws up after warranty. My dealer corrected it as the only item for the appointment even though it hadn't screwed up yet and updated the software which it did need to prevent a future screw up.

Service Procedure

Note: Carefully read and follow the instructions below.

  • DO NOT attempt to order the calibration number from GM Customer Care and Aftersales. The calibration numbers required for this service procedure are programmed into control modules via a Multiple Diagnostic Interface (MDI) with the calibration update. If you cannot access the calibration, call the Techline Customer Support Center and it will be provided.
  • DO NOT program a control module unless directed to by a service procedure or a service bulletin. If the control module is not properly configured with the correct calibration software, the control module will not control all of the vehicle features properly.
  • Ensure the programming tool is equipped with the latest software and is securely connected to the data link connector. If there is an interruption during programming, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
  • Stable battery voltage is critical during programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. When required install the EL-49642 small-light.gif SPS Programming Support Tool to maintain system voltage. If not available, connect a fully charged 12 V jumper or booster pack small-light.gif disconnected from the AC voltage supply. DO NOT connect a battery charger.
  • Turn OFF or disable systems that may put a load on the vehicles battery such as; interior lights, exterior lights (including daytime running lights), HVAC, radio, etc.
  • During the programming procedure, follow the SPS prompts for the correct ignition switch position.
  • Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO.
  • For reference, the Range/Mode switch on the instrument panel of vehicles equipped with an NQH (2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra) transfer case have 5 positions for the switch (2HI / AUTO / 4HI / 4LO /Neutral). Only vehicles with an NQH transfer case have all 5 switch positions.
  • Refer to Transfer Case Shift Control Module Programming and Setup (NQH) for additional information on programming the transfer case shift control module.
  1. Install EL-49642 small-light.gif SPS programming support tool.
  2. Access the Service Programming System (SPS) and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. On the SPS Supported Controllers screen, select K69 Transfer Case Control Module – Programming and follow the on-screen instructions.

Caution: After programming the transfer case module, it is essential that the transfer case setup procedure in step 4 is performed to ensure proper transfer case operation.

  1. On the SPS Supported Controllers screen, select K69 Transfer Case Control Module – Setup and follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. At the end of programming, choose the “Clear All DTCs” function on the SPS screen.

 

 

Approved J2534 Device with TIS2WEB can reprogram 1996 and later All GM Modules.

To obtain the latest electronic controller calibration information for your vehicle, go to https://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web and enter the vehicle’s 17 character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and select ‘Get CAL ID’.

You can then compare the latest part number with the actual number installed on the vehicle to determine if a reprogram is needed.

The Service Programming System (SPS) application is part of the TIS2Web system. To program an ECU, the SPS application must communicate with the vehicle control modules using the proper J2534 programming interface tool.

The Tech 2 supports model years 1996 and beyond. With the addition of the CAN Diagnostic Interface (CANdi) module, Tech 2 is fully backward compatible with current Tech 2 functionality and operates transparently when diagnosing non-CAN-equipped vehicles.

I didn't read the rest of the thread, but take it in.

 

There is a recall.

 

Just had mine done.

 

Dealer advised of recall, I did not get paperwork from GM.

That's the only problem I ever had with my '14 the whole time I had it. Service 4wd message came on, and it wouldn't shift out of 2wd no matter where the knob was turned. At least I was stuck in 2wd. Could've been worse. Seems to be fairly common, though. I had the exact same problem years ago with my '03 ZR2 Blazer.

Old post I know, but then how does the front axle engage and disengage quickly when in Auto (AWD)?   I know in Auto, the transfer case is in 4wd (i can hear it shift) but when there is not a traction issue, there is no power to the front wheels.   If not the clutches in the front axle, then how does it work?

DON'T SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE UNLESS THE TRUCK IS ON!!!!

 

 I put the truck in 4wd and didn't switch it out before turning off the ignition. I shut the truck off and then I turned the knob to 2hi.

 

 The next time I started the truck it displayed a message to service 4wd and it wouldn't come out of 4hi.

 

 I had to disconnect the battery, wait 5 minutes and while waiting I pulled the fuse for the TCM (Transfer Case module). I didn't put the fuse back in until after reconnecting the battery and turning the key forward. After putting the fuse back in (with the key on) the truck shifted out of 4 wheel. Hope this helps...

I thought for a second your method had saved me. When I plugged the fuse back in as per your method, I could hear the solenoid retract(at least that's what it sounded like). However, went to take it for a drive....nah, still got 4wd engaged ?

    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31.     • Take an automotive stethoscope to the vacuum pump. Iirc those tick as well.
