New Recall-Airbag/Pretensioner Not Deploying

I took my Denali in for an oil change and this recall, as it shows up on my recall list. Dealer confirmed the VIN is in the recall list. They came back later and said it didn't actually need to be performed on my truck as many trucks actually already have the right software, but GM issued a very wide recall list to cover their bases. They also said they still bill GM for the computer connect and check time to find it wasn't needed. So I don't know what to make of that other than I signed the paperwork and went on my way.

I went in yesterday for this specific recall. They said if the truck accepts the reprogram, then it will be like a 20 minute software install, if there is an issue they need to put in a new module. 1.5 hours later my truck came back with a fresh oil change, tire rotation and they said the software install went perfect. One thing to note, I left my Diablo Tune in the vehicle and there were no issues, they were able to reprogram the airbag module just fine, so they say. Interesting to hear that some of the trucks have the correct software already.

Someone earlier said they software install reset his truck and he lost his radio presets. My radio presets, seat presets etc all remained the same. Only thing odd, is this morning my remotelink didn't work to shut my garage door. I need to find out tonight if that was someone reset, or if my garage door was just acting up.

FCA just issued the same recall on their vehicles.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling 1.9-million vehicles worldwide because their air bags might not deploy in a crash.

Most are in the U-S, but nearly 225,000 were sold in Canada and Mexico.
The recall affects certain Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles from the 2010-2014 model years.
Fiat Chrysler says defective air-bag and seat-belt control modules may prevent the airbags from deploying and seatbelts from tightening in a frontal crash.
The automaker says three deaths and five injuries may be related to the issue.

So this seems similar to the Takata airbag where the detonator was exploding. It is not manufacturer specific, it is in a module sold in many different vehicle brands

Yesterday I took my 2016 Tahoe to the dealer to have the module reprogrammed. Specifically asked the technician if he needed to disconnect the battery to reprogram the module, and he said no. All my presets were intact, but noticed for some reason my DIC was displaying the radio information instead of the speedometer, which was where I left it.

I traded a 2011 4Runner, which could kill you when the airbag deployed, on the Tahoe, which could kill you because the airbag might not deploy. At least the Tahoe was an easy fix. Toyota couldn't tell me when the airbag was going to be available for repair on the 4 Runner. My wife and I got tired of joking (sort of - since not really funny) on which one of us was going to sit in the passenger side "seat of death" when we rode in the 4Runner.

Now I just need to get my 2015 Sierra 1500 to the dealer so it's module can be reprogrammed.

The DIC does reset to the radio most of the time. No idea why. Don't really care though.

Seems like the only thing that gets reset after disconnecting the battery is changing the DIC to music. None of my radio or XM presets were ever reset. Not even settings. When I took mine in earlier this week my DIC wasn't on music, it was where I left it on Trip A.

So maybe some dealers think they need to reset it after reprogramming.

Let me clarify. Programming is done to the SDM. No battery disconnect. No reset by the tech. Didn't even notice they were switcing until our parts manager said his did after I programmed his truck. Not all do it but most do.

big difference here from what I understand, is that if the airblags deployed in the Toyota it would be almost a guarantee that shards of metal would come with them. With the software situation, it is in very very rare situations that the airbag would NOT deploy.

I am just glad it was an easy and painless fix!

Found out about the recall reading the news. Took the truck to the local Chevrolet dealer this morning for an oil change and tire rotation and asked about the recall, they did the SDM reprogram while I was there.

Had my '16 Silverado in for an oil change and rotation the other day, they also performed the recall. I noticed the same thing (DIC displaying the radio station info), thought that was part of the latest software as I hadn't dug deep enough in the menus before to find it.

Today I made a quick stop, shutting the truck off to go into a store. After starting the engine, while driving at low speeds the interior chime went off several times at random intervals (10-20 seconds apart). No dash lights or any reason for it to do so (all doors were shut). Even happened after pressing on the seat belt to make sure it was latched. Once I got above 30 it didn't happen again. First time for that to happen, wonder if it's related to the re-program.. Also seems a couple of the chimes were partial, as in it didn't complete the tone.

HI,

I'm taking my truck tonight to get the recall. Please let me know if the reprogram the HMI. The reason I ask is because I update the HMI to have navigation and if the dealer reprogram the HMI they will delete the navigation features. Thanks,
