2014 Part # for 3.73 Rear and Front Assembly

Good Afternoon,

 

I'm looking for someone here that has a 2014 Sierra or Silverado 6.2 that has the 3.73 gear ratio (4x4) and would be willing to share their VIN so I can get the exact OEM numbers. I called GM performance and they told me it's easier to find someone who has it and run their VIN to get the numbers. I'm looking for the part numbers (Whole axle assembly and Front Dif) to do a swap without messing with the internals of my current assembly. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

But will it be cheaper to re-gear than spend $6100 on axles? That is how much the front and rear go for combined...before tax...

 

Any particular reason you are wanting to swap? 2016 with the 6.2/8 speed, I assume you are either 3.23 or 3.42 gears now...

I am going to guess either future bro lift on big tires or ego. The gear spreads between the 8 are very tight, gears aren't making near the difference they did back in the day when the transmission ratios were so far apart. Curious to hear the answer myself, that is an expensive change with somewhat minimal return.

Labor alone for the front and rear will run at least 1600.00 just to re gear. Parts will likely run about the same as master kits will be needed for front and rear. Front differential and rear for a 5.3 3.73 with a 9.76 is about 2800 at many GM parts websites. Add in the fact that I might not exhaust my remaining warranty by using OEM, it seems worth just getting the assemblies. As far as my gear ratio, it's a 3.23. Not happy with it.

Neither. Don't have big tires and 3.73 is far from being labeled as a tool to feed any ego. It's a great median ratio.

 

GM has changed their purchase packages when it comes to gear ratio. You used to be able to purchase a Z71with a 3.73 ratio, I owned one. Now, they only offer it in max tow package. The acceleration and take off is simply better with the ratio. Other than perceived MPG gains, why GM makes 3.08 and 3.23 ratio's is questionable.

The 3.42 that is available with the max tow package on your 2016 6.2 / 8 speed will give the same overall ratios as the 3.73's with a 2014 6.2 / 6 speed.

Both of them together is not $2800. That's less than what ANY GM dealer even pays for them from GM. And how much shipping do you think they will hit you for just to save a buck? A $hit ton. GMPartsDirect has the rear for $2907 and the front goes for $1003. That is not $2800, rather $3910. And don't forget shipping.

Don't forget also, if you re-gear you will also need to have the correct calibration flashed into your ECM/TCM for the new gear ratio. That part you wont be able to get from GM or any dealer and will have to be done aftermarket. So if you are wanting to go with OEM stuff in order to keep your warranty, then you just killed your project because the aftermarket tune is going to open you up for any drivetrain liability of you have any problems.

There's with and without limited slip which is significant difference in price and either can be used from what I've been told by my local GM maintenance center. I don't need full front assembly just the differential. Add in the fact that I don't touch the internals of my current assemblies I can sell them and get some back.

 

The only issue as stated is the computer. 3.73's may not work with my 8 speed as has been pointed out. I may realize that the 3.42 will suffice and provide what I'm looking to accomplish and likely will have the code to run and calibrate the computer. Problem is the 3.42's in a 6.2 are scarce and finding one to see if the juice is worth the squeeze may take some time.

Exactly what I was thinking! Also, I respect your reasons for wanting to switch and I'm sure you've considered the pros and cons of re-gearing or trading in your truck. I definitely believe you can get the parts without using someone else's VIN and think it would be a mistake for someone to give it to you. Good luck with your plans. I have a 4.3 6spd. and my acceleration and take-off meets my needs nicely!

I would get a tune put on your truck before you spend the money on hard parts like new diffs. Alot of your slow acceleration is throttle management and transmission tune.

Based on my VIN you want part# 23204006 on the rear FYI wholesale cost is about $3200

 

The front is a little more tricky the VIN filter doesn't knock it down, they want the code off the diff. I crawled under mine but couldn't see the tag. If I get an open hoist here at work I can lift it up and look again. Was your last vehicle drive cable throttle body? Or what year was your last vehicle.

    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps. 
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.

    • My office is slowly filling with Blazer parts. Getting ready to do the big bang of repairs. Intake (second time), water pump, radiator, hoses, and I'm going to re-seal the timing cover where someone went hog wild with silicone. Might as well, because I don't think that's done right.   There's a local tow yard that I didn't realize also has quite the inventory of junk vehicles. This is an old school junkyard. No waivers. Cash only, you were never here if anyone asks. Don't piss off the owner, or you'll end up in the back of one of those cars, headed for the shredder. And if you see something, don't snitch. Cars stacked double high, wasps nests, trip hazards and junk everywhere. I found a few little odds/ends for my Blazer. The $20 I spent was worth the experience alone. But I was never there. What yard?   I officially love/hate this truck. It's so out of my wheelhouse, roughest vehicle I've ever owned. Every. single. repair. -is so hard-fought, everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. Currently in a hate phase, and kind of wish I was closer to sending it down the road with a lucky new owner, to be honest. Preparing for the day when I tear into this thing...lots of pre-funk with Ibuprofen.   Rock Auto sent me a bad reman rear wiper motor. It was a bear to install. The tailgate in these things has about eleventy-billion fastners and pieces and things that need to be uninstalled/moved just to access the shoddy rear wiper motor. The casing on mine was cracked clean through, btw. Nice, GM, nice. SO I got this new motor installed, hit the switch, I see it wig-wag (without the arm installed) and think I'm golden. Reassemble everything. With the wiper arm installed I gave it one final test. Time to clean up and take the other half out to dinner, collect a paycheck, right?   Nope. I hear the plastic worm gear stripping as the arm hung up. Just like my broken motor. Weak/old and shredding itself internally. I can assist the arm and the range of motion is normal, and it parks correctly. It just doesn't have the poop to actually sweep the arm with a blade on it. Oh, hell. Turned the key off and shut the shop door behind me. I get to do that over again, too.
    • A complete delete is the most thorough mechanical solution, but it is also major engine work. On a quiet truck that is still under extended warranty, opening the engine purely as prevention is difficult to justify. A plug-in disabler stops commanded cylinder deactivation, but it does not remove or repair the collapsible lifters, so it should not be treated as failure insurance. I would keep the oil full, document the maintenance, and have any persistent tick, misfire, or loss of power diagnosed promptly. If the engine eventually has to come apart, that is the logical time to compare an OEM-style repair with a complete delete. The right choice depends on the truck’s symptoms, warranty status, expected ownership period, and whether the engine already needs to be opened.
