Transmission Issues

Hi, I am new to the forum and have done some reading on 8 speed transmission issues. I have a 2016 Silverado 4X4 6.2 with the 8 speed. build date was 3-3-16 built at plant G. The transmission just does not shift well in the first few gears. It has been to the dealership 3 times. Two of those times it was towed in because I got a check engine light and it went into limp mode. The truck only has 4K miles on it, I almost never drive it just have it for a toy. Does anyone have any suggestions or TSB's they would like to share as I plane to go back to the dealership and try to get some resolution. I also have a severe amount of lash in the drive train. When I sit stationary and shift from Drive to Reverse it clunks terribly. My old F250 4X4 with 220K on it does not clunk at all. The dealer said it was "normal". I think not. Also wondering if anyone has paint issues. Seems like every time something touches the truck I get a ding and a chip. I wish I had not bought this truck. Thanks in advance for any help, Robert

Hello Robert,

I certainly understand how this transmission concern can be frustrating, especially so early into your vehicle ownership. Our team would be more than happy to look further into this situation on your behalf. If interested, please send us private message with your VIN, current mileage, full contact details and dealership at your earliest convenience.

Best,

Im in the same voat as you and GM will just say we dont have a fix gor it yet

They keep telling me that it is not broken. If it is not broken then there is nothing to come up with a fix for. Guess it is supposed to slam, stutter, flare and act generally confused. Has anyone received any help from GM that actually fixed the way this transmission shifts?

Little over 15000 on the truck, about 9000 on transmission #2. Transmission #1 would flare 500 RPM between 2 and 3 if I followed a particular sequence. Transmission #2 will do this sometimes, but is not repeatable enough for them to do anything.

OK. You have a little more miles then I do. I'm at 14,000 and I do believe in the "learn mode". My truck did shift bad when I first got it,but now it's smooth. I thought maybe that's what you may have been experiencing.

I noticed a dramatic improvement in my 8-sp once I changed out the GM Dexron HP to another well know synthetic atf brand, To me it was a night and day difference. But still the 8-sp is computer controlled and its going to do whats it programmed to do. Computer software is a never perfect and has bugs/idiosyncrasies, or as GM likes to call it, working normally.

Here is what has been discovered so far. First time it was towed due to check engine light and transmission would not shift at all they found U0101 lost comm with TCM, and U0102 lost comm with transfer case. Code P0700 was also set. They claimed it was a bent pin in a connector X115 grid location. They gave me back the truck and it still did not shift well. Was told that was normal. Also told the clunking on decell was normal. 1300 miles.

I took it back in at 2700 mi. told them the battery was dying if I let it sit for 5 days, and I was not happy with how it shifts. They told me battery was fine. Did update to transmission S039E and reset adapt code FDB4C. It actually drove and shifted pretty well after that

3100 miles and I got another check engine light. Had them tow it in same U0101 U0102 codes. They told me the negative battery cable was drawing too many milliamps so they replaced it after tearing my entire dash apart looking for loose ground wires (GM told them too). It still shifted terribly in the lower gears, but the battery is not going dead.

I am bringing it back in Wednesday for the shifting issues. I hope they can fix it. Took it in 10-12-16, They did another update, Cause #16-NA-019 Information on transd adaptive functions and correcting low mileage harsh shifts, slips or flares. 8480318 Trnsmission service fast learn. 22wpchv. What all that means I have no idea. It does shift a little better, I find it very interesting that Elcamino got good results changing the fluid. Could you please send me a PM with what fluid you used and also if you replaced the filter? Thanks!

I have 29,000 miles on my Sierra. Over 15,000 miles since the change over back in March '16.

So far at 7500 miles no issues with the 6.2 8spd. Build date Jan 2016. I can MAKE the 8sp 2nd to 1st clunk if I can manipulate the gas and brake pedal just right......never does it if I drive right you have to work at it to get it to do it. Just wondering if at such low mileage if the OP just needs to drive it a bit more? Maybe a couple of burnouts with the TC off will help her breakin a bit better. Too much babying may be ruining his truck!!!

On the paint I do see a few rock nicks already. I am going to see about getting some touchup paint I guess. All of today's automotive manufacturers are utilizing water based paint systems and they are not as tough as the solvent based paints of the past. However the environment is so much better off for it, so go hug some trees dirt people and buy some touchup paint..............

Trust me there is NO babying of any vehicle I own. I did not buy the 6.2 for towing, I have a diesel for that. :). The truck does sit an awful lot, I only got it for a toy so it is driven rarely. Still under 5,000 miles. I really don't think that has anything to do with how the transmission shifts, I am 51 years old and have put over a million miles on various pickups I have used in my business for 28 years. Never has one been to the shop as often as this brand new Silverado. I am up to 3 rock dings so far, I already ordered some touch up paint since the dealer wants $1200.00 to repair 3 dings. Crazy.

Not sure if it's the same issue but I have 2k miles on my 16' v6 engine, 6 speed. I notice when I'm braking or coasting down to about 30mph, the RPM will drop to about 1000 and then jump up to 1100. And you can feel the truck kind of shift and jolt forward. More noticeable in stop and go traffic. Didn't notice it when I first bought the truck, but more noticeable now. Bought it back in June so haven't driven it a lot. Anyone else having the same issues?

Just took it in to the dealer for the airbag tensioner recall and told them about the RPM issue. I'm sure they will just come back and say it's "normal."

I am on my 2nd transmission now. Shifting from 8-7, every time, produces an unreasonably harsh jolt that feels like you hit a pot hole or neutral dropped it. It also does the 2-1 harsh downshift as well as when putting it into D from R or P. I've been to the dealer several times now and the keep telling me it's "normal." It's more frustrating being told it's normal as though to dismiss what I'm saying about the transmission because it's 100% NOT normal. No other car on the road shifts like this. It's unacceptable for GM to create a flawed product and then say that it's operating as designed. If that's the case then you designed the product wrong. I'm truly shocked that they even sell the trucks with these 8 speed transmissions.

My only option is to spend money on aftermarket tuning now to get a transmission to shift the way any car should shift. It's very irritating having to spend money and lose my warranty to fix GM's problem since they are unwilling to produce a product the functions correctly. I would be embrassed if I were the engineers who designed this transmission software. I will say that when I get another new car I will be WAY more critical of GM's offering. I will not make this same mistake twice. I'm just hoping that, by then, they can figure out how to make a fundamental component work. Currently my truck is literally a rolling billboard for why not to buy a Sierra...the transmission is honestly that bad. The brother-in-law test drove it and said after, "no way am I buying that" and went out to buy a different brand. Every other person who rides in my car and experiences these thing is always like, "what was that?" I want to love this truck, but it's a flat out embrassment.

    • For some unexplained reason my father wanted a salvage yard. As we were getting the family business off the ground one brother ran the salvage yard. We gathered there when rained out working on pipelines in the eighties to pull parts. Perfectly good running vehicles would come to us simply because they wouldn’t pass emissions inspection. We were able to swap parts and sell some of them. I got a clean old nova with a bad engine. I pulled a perfectly good small block out a Camaro. A father and son project with a rebuilt engine. The son couldn’t get the engine running right. The problem was the spark plugs weren’t gapped. The 90s vehicles probably widened the gap of shade tree do it yourself engine repair. My do it yourself hot rod repair stopped at the 70s. After that my trusted mechanic kept them in running shape.
    • I have an old dental chair in my shop. Something I got for free and apparently it has more than scrap value? People collect them although mine isn't restored or anything. It's visually interesting (1930's Ritter) which is why I like it. And it IS decently comfortable if you kick back.   When a good buddy of mine saw it he said, let me guess, Atlas. It's a conversation piece? As in, you ask the questions, they do the talking?   Where do you hide the jar of teeth?   I would never.
    • Are we talking about the same thing, though? The 7 versus 3 wear metals was from Lakespeed's 3.0-specific oil brand comparison test between AcDelco oil and Mobil ESP. The filter remains a constant so whatever excess particles the AcDelco oil is producing aren't being filtered out.   I'm assuming there's a parallel comparison to be made; IF the filter can filter down those particles, engine life increases, and your graph makes the case that a better filter (lower micron rating) can increase engine life. Introducing fewer particles AND filtering those particles with higher efficiency is the best of all worlds. Good oil, good filter.   Where we may disagree is the "baseline relative engine life". I'm more apt to believe the base engine life value is 200k+ on very average oil and filters, "bulk oil of unknown brand and white-label generic fleet-grade filter, Jiffy Lube"   Going from a 10 micron filter to a 5 micron filter should boost a base 200k to 275k in a vacuum as a single factor alone.   Here's the whatabout: How does regularly changing the oil and filter ahead of recommended schedule influence baseline engine life? Most people aren't going to science the heck out of this stuff or ask about Micron ratings, HTHS, or wear comparison tests at Jiffy Lube. Most of the Jiffy lube techs would say they need to call their tech support line to even try to get an answer.   --   Because we love anecdotes here, when I was fishing for 4.3 parts at a local yard this weekend, ALL of the 4.3 vehicles had well over 200k. I love looking at odometers of junked vehicles. How far did THIS go before landing at the crusher? The ones that still had engines weren't seized. None of them were vehicles I'd consider were Amsoil queens, in fact most of them had some kind of service cling-sticker in the corner of the windshield indicating it probably had very average maintenance services. Even the fresh parts rigs- I'm not sure taking an S/T series to 400k has much value considering the running value of those vehicles was probably somewhere around $1,000. 25+ years is a good run on time alone.   The intake manifold I salvaged had clean and bright pool areas. As expected, I found the fuel lines in the manifold rubbed through, just like mine. I'm guessing the lines on that donor truck started leaking, the truck started running rough, and its owner said that's enough I'm unwilling or can't take it out of service for several days, or spend $1000+ to repair it at a shop, it's simply time for a newer more reliable vehicle (or, more than likely, this is the 2nd, 3rd time this has happened in the truck's lifetime). While I don't count on my Blazer for reliability, the thought of giving it away for parts at certain points during my adventure, and being mentally free from its needs has has crossed my mind. I'd be losing $1500 or so, but I can only make more money; not time.
