My first 4x4 please help

You know what, I am using the truck as I see fit and I am not worried about parts wearing out. I bought a Chevy and I know how to drive it. Driving is actually how I make a living. Getting in an accident could cost me my job. Being safe on the road and getting home to my family is my number one goal, not worrying if my $40000 truck is going to break because I used the features i purchased with it. You go ahead and be afraid to use it. I however have been using auto 4 (for years with no negative effect) and will continue to use it , as I said before I traded in my06 sierra with over 187000 miles (still in great condition and nothing wrong with the 4wd system). If a part breaks down I will repair it with my own hands and my own tools until then I have over 40000 miles of power train warranty left on my 14 z71. Make your choice and stop trying to scare others into making the same decision you have.

Not scaring, just giving information from GMC. I have not owned a vehicle with Auto 4WD before this one so that is all I have to go on (and my knowledge of how 4WD works compared to a smart AWD setup)

Not everyone is capable of repairing stuff like that by themselves. I would not be doing that repair myself and I would like to think I am a little more mechanically inclined that most :)

Putting that you have that many miles with no negative effects is good for experience in terms of making a decision. I will be less hesitant to use the Auto 4WD knowing that now. Without the similar experience myself I just go on what I read from the manual and probably err on the side of caution.

Using auto4 does not mean you just drive like a crazy person in the rain it just adds another redundant layer of safety.

So I'm on my way to work this morning and could not help but to think of this thread. Left my house about 5a.m. and it was pouring rain. Did a mix of driving stop go and highway. Just drove normal or a little slower cause it was raining so hard. And never once did I have a problem spinning or slipping. So I just don't understand way in my option people need to use auto 4x4 in the rain.

you must be the first person on the planet to own both a prius and a 4x4 GMC truck. pretty much opposite ends of the spectrum there.

I have never had a problem with any car until my sierra. I also have a stock mustang 5.0, with 412hp, it gets much better traction in the wet.

I have to baby the throttle so much in 2wd when it's raining in the sierra. Traction is so poor I can spin the tires at WOT doing 75 mph. No vehicle that runs a 14 second quarter mile should be able to roast the tires at highway speeds.

It's probably the goodyear sr-a's at fault, once I need new tires hopefully I won't have the same issue, but as of right now, it's just safer to turn that dial to 4auto.

You are missing the point. It is not safer. If your tires are THAT BAD you need to just slow down and change your driving style. 4WD isn't going to stop you any faster.

it's without question safer.

Who says I'm going fast? What is wrong with some of you.

Stop confusing having the ability to accelerate faster with speeding.

If you take 15 seconds to reach 40mph, and I take 10 seconds to reach 40mph, our stopping distances are still the same.

You saying that you know you can spin the tires at 75MPH by going WOT is telling me you are going fast.

I think the sad thing is you are confusing tire performance with 4WD. You really need new tires if your Mustang handles better, I owned a mustang and they are no better with equivalent rubber.

Well you assumed incorrectly.

I am not confusing anything. My truck stops and turns fine. It's a combination of having 460ft lbs of torque, a weird throttle, 3.42 rear, very little weight on the rear tires, factory tires with less then ideal wet performance, and living in an area that getting to a certain speed quickly is often needed.

I mean if you want me to whip out the science on safe driving I will.

It has definitely swayed from the OP's subject a little.

I still don't understand the argument, auto 4 does nothing for you in the rain. It absolutely does add more control in almost all situations except maybe braking. 4 tires driving with abs sensors and traction control are better than 2 tires driving. Again, in almost all situations except braking.

It all comes back to personal preference. If you don't use it fine. But don't tell me it is overkill, because I like to use it . I have noticed a difference in my daily driving of more than 85 miles roundtrip in the rain. The ability to get out ahead of traffic makes me feel safer than being stuck in a pack of a bunch of other vehicles. That also does not mean I am speeding or driving like a mad man.

    • I have thought an EV might have some practical value in extending the life of the ICE members of ones fleet. Now....I'm convinced of it. I've been letting my better half access Raven (Mitsubishi Mirage) for her needs while Dizzy has been in the shop. Being the fuel freak I am and given the fact Raven is capable of over 60 mpg in clean air on a warm day I was taken back by the wife's ability to take a car that had used a half a tank of gas that to that point had returned a value of 57 mpg and return in with a decimating 51 mpg for that same tank in that same day in a 15 mile round trip of short hop errands and a stop in the drive through at Micky D's.  😱   Trust me on this. It would take the remainder of that tank driven on the highway to return that tank to just 54 mpg. This is not a Mitsubishi issue. This is an ICE issue that is magnified in vehicles capable of such high fuel economy values. On a percentage basis your 1500 does the same thing. Short hopping an ICE consumes a good deal more fuel and in doing so provides zero additional useable outputs. That entire volume of fuel is wasted in diluting the cylinder walls oil films, creating crankcase moisture and acid content and the resultant wear.    Enter the SLATE. All of that is avoided and the ICE's advantage in range and made useful at reduced wear for your ICE!   Kind'a cool.
    • Back in the day people would buy cars based on performance. The charger posted does 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. And it’s fully loaded.  It has a decent warranty and will fit most anyone’s needs. Remember the original Hemi? 90 day warranty. 25K mini truck or that car? I’d go with the car. It wouldn’t fit my perimeter. If I could just talk my wife out of her Genesis. It would be perfect for her.
    • Let's pivot this back. Someone said they wanted pictures.   Even better, there's already video. Pre-prod prototypes are already on the road and they're letting the press drive them.   JerryRigEverything did a good review. I really enjoy his content and EV adventures, so I was thrilled when he had the chance to review a Slate:
    • The Charger EV was stillborn. Wrong car at the wrong price for Dodge's intended audience. Now at a good price with fire-sale discounts, and still not selling, it's still very much the wrong car. Again, Dodge's intended audience. I believe a lot of Stellantis' EV blunders were all under Tavares' regime at Stellantis...the board convinced him to move on. Neat car, just wasn't received on the level that would sustain mass production.   Dodge is headed in a better direction for its core business. I didn't think there was anything left to get excited about re: the Durango after its 15 year run, but they're just now releasing a 392 version that should price out in the low 40's. Nicely done. I'm not sure I would touch anything Stellantis makes with a 10' pole these days, but the Durango is still mostly parts designed like 3 parent companies ago so maybe it's still OK?
