Pro Comp Pro Runner Shocks

Hey guys,

 

Like many of you, I'm moving to larger tires. I'm getting some winter tires installed next week (275/70/R18 - 33.2"- studded, Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT2 ). Based on everything I've read on this forum, I was going to go with the Bilstein 5100s to level my 2015 GMC 1500 (crew cab V8). 4Wheel Parts has the 5100 on backorder so they're pushing me towards the Pro Comp Pro Runner shock. Anyone have experience with these? There's not a whole lot of info on here about them.

Yeah I did these all around on my 15 LT 4x4 crew last October to level it out, also wheels and larger AT tires same time. Same deal I waited a month & a half on indefinite backorder for Blisteins. I wanted the Blisteins cause I have them on my leveled 01 2500HD and like how they ride & like you I couldn't find many reviews/info on the Comps. I've only put 10,xxx miles on the Comps and I went from the "black" struts/shocks to these as mine is not a Z71. I drive 90% highway 8% intown 2% gravel & 0% off road/winter. It was hard at first going from the ultra cush ride of the stockers to the Comps but I eventually got used to them and now don't even notice the difference anymore I think a large part of this was the "break-in" period of the Comps. I've still never rode in a 14+ with the Blisteins so I can only compare my 3/4 ton or a few Z71s I've rode in and feel the Comps ride better than the Ranchos and are almost if not equivalent to my Blisteins. After one year I have 0 complaints with the Comps my only observations are my truck rides more like a truck with them over the stockers, I never adjusted my headlights after install so I get flashed at night sometimes, and I've never bottomed them out but there is one dip on a highway I drive where I get the exact opposite of bottoming out I don't know what that's called "maxed out" maybe? like the struts don't have quite enough up travel? but it's a 55mph road and I'm going 70mph. I do pull a 20ft car hauler or a 14ft utility trailer with this truck occasionally & it rides great with or without the trailers loaded but still squats the same in the rear as it did with the stockers so some day I'm ordering the Timbers to help with that. Can't say about loads in the bed as I haven't hauled any real weight in my HUGE 5'6" box because nothing really fits in it anyway...

Not sure the price of the Pro Comps but you should check out the Eibach Pro-Truck Leveling shocks. I don't know anyone who has them on a Sierra but Toyota guys LOVE them. Eibach claims they will give a comfortable on-road ride, as well as capable off road.

the shocks were missing the spring seats in. It's boxes. Eibach has fed ex'd them as of yesterday.

Maybe you should also consider fox coilovers or the boss coilovers from halo lifts on here

I have the Eibach Pro-Truck Sport shocks in the front. This is the before and after with them set to the second highest setting. It now sits at 39 1/4" in the front and 40 1/8" in the back.

I know this is kind of an old thread, but I also know people don't like starting new threads about the same topic, so I am going to post my experience here. I just bought a set of Pro Comp Pro Runner shocks for the front of my '14 Silverado yesterday, and I installed them last night. Just on the drive home I noticed the body roll is gone, which was my main goal. My truck already has about 130,000 miles, so the stock shocks were pretty tired. I am going to do the rears today, and I might have to install some taller blocks in the rear to help level the truck out more. I didn't realize how much the stock shocks had sagged, it must have been over an inch lower my truck sat with stocks. I'll update once I get some miles on these Pro Comps, but I already like them. To be honest, it's possible I just like them because anything is better than the worn out stocks, but I still think they are wonderful. I'll update once I get 10k miles on them or so.

Good to hear.  I asked about these quite a while back and didn't get a response.  A GM dealership near me offers these at a reasonable price.  Do you have a height adjustable version?

I'm indecisive between all of them. I'm just looking for a level and preferably a better ride quality than the ranchos. Problem is those tend to be mutally exclusive from the other. Any ideas how the eibachs are over bilsteins or procomps?

Yeah, I have part number ZX2108 in front and ZX2020 in back. The ZX2108 has a reversable collar that allows you to either get stock height or 2" lift up front. The guy at 4wheelparts locally told me it was 2.25", but I don't think I believe him because I haven't found that info online, only 2". He could be right. But I left mine at stock height and kept my RC-style (under shock) level kit. I honestly only did this because I couldn't find the shorter stock bolts, and I had nothing to use to fasten them to the lower control arm. But I drove about 75 miles today and I really like the new shocks. Didn't get a chance to install rears yet but I will try to get that done tomorrow.

 

I was nervous because I really wanted Bilstein 5100's, but my dad has been in the auto industry selling rubber molded parts (bushings, gaskets, etc) to GM, Ford, and Chrysler for over 30 years and he knows all about shocks. He knows engineers at most of the manufacturing plants that make these shocks and said anything monotube is going to perform very similar to each other. He has spent years talking with the engineers who develop different shocks for different companies and he said most popular brands (Rancho, Monroe, Gabriel, & Pro Comp) are all made by Tenneco in the USA (Pro Comp may not be anymore, not sure, but the rest are) and they are built virtually identically. So a 46mm monotube shock from Rancho will be indistinguishable to most consumers from a 46mm monotube from Pro Comp or Gabriel or Monroe. The ranchos that come stock have different valving which is why they ride so much worse, but the other upgrade ranchos aren't like that. 

 

Anyway, he said Bilstein monotube 46mm shocks are not going to be much different from the Pro Comp, and since the local 4wheelparts had the Comps in stock I went with those. There are only a few minor differences and none of those differences will affect how the shock performs to a degree I'd be able to tell. He said mostly the difference is the Bilsteins use an older type of gasket seal, and the comps have a newer more reliable type. But even that difference isn't much. Hope that info helps, I did my best trying to relay the info from my dad. If anyone has more questions I can ask him and try to get them answered for you. He knows his stuff.

My dad said Eibach bought Bilstein's old manufacturing equipment when they built their new production plant and started making shocks with the cheapest parts they could find. He says they are ok, but they don't tend to last as long because the rubber seals break down too quickly because they cheaped out and used crappy rubber from somewhere in Asia. They are okay if you want to replace really bad shocks and just want something that will work for a while, but for longevity you can't beat Bilstein or a Tenneco brand aftermarket offering.
