Realistic mpg's

Hi All,

Somewhat new member with a new 16 1500 Silverado LT purchased 10/30. I've done searches to try and figure out what I should be getting for mpg's because I'm a little disappointed so far. I get a lot of compliments on the truck and most people follow with " I hear those get great gas mileage". My last truck was an 04 F-150 Lariet 5.4 with 150,000 miles and no overdrive. I was getting around 12.5 mpg's around town. The new truck has 5.3 with 3.74 gears. Stock 20" wheels and no modifications other than cosmetic. The only thing I've done that would affect it is a tonneau cover. A guy at work has same truck except his is a 2015 and he claims +/- 20 mpg's. My numbers according to the dash are....

2155 miles

11.4 average

23.9 best ( all highway)

I've been keeping track with the trip and calculating the old fashioned way for the last 3 fill ups and consistently averaging 14.5 with 75% in town and 25% highway. Honestly I kinda drive like an old lady so pretty sure that is not the problem.

Am I way off or will it get better after the truck breaks in?

75% town? Winter? I wouldn't be disappointed. Especially if most of those miles are short trips. One trip of 25 miles normally yields a better number than three trips of 8 miles and change. There is allot to consider when doing this sort of study.

Winter and letting it warm up for a long time will effect that average. Also check your tire pressures to make sure they're all equal and not too low. Lower the psi the more grip you get but your MPGs go down. Opposite of both when you have high psi.

My last tank was 100% in town, mostly under 4 mile trips. 10 min warm ups be its cold out. I'm yielding 13.5mpg. I would say you're about on par.

Im getting 21mpg on avg when I freeway drive and around 17mpg in town.

Tires are at 35 according to the tpms. I also do a lot of short trips, I live 3 miles from work and have a company truck that I drive all day. No extended warm up in am because it lives inside garage and only remote start if it's really cold so just a few times so far.

I'm definitely not complaining and I love the truck so far, just curious because of all the comments about how good they are on gas mileage.

Any performance mods or stock?

35 is actually low for a full size truck. I had factory Goodyear SRAs on my '14 5.3 and always kept it above 40, usually was between 40 and 45.

Hmmm....I'll have to look into this, I haven't actually checked with a gauge since bringing home from dealership.

I have a Tungsten 2015 Chevy Silverado LTZ 4x4 with 4.5" Zone Suspension Lift, Amp Research Powersteps, Magnaflow 14", RetraxOne, and window tint. No Performance mods past that in fact I even took off the Valence. These trucks will do 17-20 mpg easily with just a little attention to the mpg meter and practice. When there are a lot of hills or when Im going up hill ill do it all manually, when I drive on straight aways or freeways then I use the cruise control. Just set a goal for what you want your average to be realistically, then try to keep the bar above it :)

Do you have 35's? And is it 6.2 or 5.3?? Thanks

16 rcsb 5.3 with 3.42 gears. Drive 75% highway 25% city. Averaging 16.5 calculated mpg. Definitely not as advertised. But, still better than a ford or dodge :driving:

Stock 20" black 5 spoke blackout wheels with 275/55r20 RSAs

    • No I didn’t watch a video of a person who analyzes oil for a living explain general oil usage. For clarity I did ask my brothers one who runs our equipment business. The other who runs our old ROW business about oil usage. Nothing has changed since I retired. Their personal vehicles or work vehicles use no oil. Not enough to see on the oil checking device. Then I pondered. I like to ponder. In this extended oil changing world with oil change countdowns or lights. If engines used say a qt every 2500 miles or up to even 4000 miles. With oil changes reaching as high as 15000 miles. Normal for most people is eight to ten. Vehicles should potentially be seizing up all over the place. Especially in hilly terrain. Just how many people actually check their oil? Maybe 10 percent. Those are the people that probably change their oil early. I like to research used car listings. I have five favorite dealers I check. They all list carfax with their listing. It’s rare to see vehicles with anything but extended oil changes. Transmission service, forget about it. I’ve seen Honda and Toyota certified vehicles up to 100K miles and ten years old. With nothing but normal maintenance. Isn’t nice we all have different experiences and believe our way is the best. You certainly get backup for whatever you believe. Life would be boring otherwise.
    • Interesting rumor. Dealers near me have been tight-lipped so far, but if this reveal actually happens next week, I'm really hoping they finally give the HD a proper interior overhaul. The competition has been eating their lunch in the cabin department for a while now.
    • There are a few good takeaways in that video that pertain to this thread, certainly the possibility of the oil control rings having buildup, the fuel injectors and how clean or not that they are ending up affecting the pistons rings carbon buildup, and the fact that its normal up to a point for a given engine to use some oil, and that the oil quality that is being utilized is part of that ring clogging up issue as well.   I was talking with a neighbor yesterday who has a baby LZ0 duramax and he had bought it slightly used but it does consume some oil and he has switched over to 5W-30 Euro spec oil and in this case that never made a difference in consumption over the factory 0W-20 recommendation. He finds it uses a quart in about 3500 miles and as he goes a ways over that distance he adds oil to full and goes another 1000 miles or so and then changes oil and is typically at 40% or so left on the oil monitor at that point with his use case of quite a lot of highway miles and more limited in short run use. I don't know what other LZ0 engines are doing for oil consumption but that is what his is doing.
    • I dont care what Lake says. Goodnight.
    • Ok well I guess Lake disagrees with me on a few points. I call oil consumption pretty basic. Rudimentary. He calls it "really complicated." I think 1qt consumed in 3k miles is a lot. He says that's normal. In 22 minutes, he'll use his natural talent to explain oil consumption to anyone watching this video. He covers everything from obvious engine damage to how normally functioning healthy engines consume oil by design. Lake explicitly states how you drive will impact oil consumption.   Shut up and watch:
