2014 Differential Fluid Change

Just came in from changing the fluid in the differential. Looks like there was only about 2 quarts in the diff. I added 3 back to the diff and it just started to seep out the fill hole. is this still the acceptable level for these diffs? Its always been that way when I done the drain and fill on different vehicles in the past. I took it down the road after the fluid swap and it seems to be a little more quite and smoother. There was no signs of leakage anywhere near the diff.

For the rear, 9.5" is 2.59 quarts, 9.75" is 2.75 quarts

How can I tell which I have? Is it the numbers that are cast on the snout of the diff?

Just went out and took a picture. It is exactly where I thought it was. You can see what yours is by looking through the wheel well at your diff.

You need to find out if the "seep out the fill" is the correct level...some it is, some want it below the fill hole.

Nice.

How many miles is on the truck? I try to get my differential fluids changed out early. Usually around 5k miles on the vehicle. That way I get all the wear-in material out of the differential and clean up the magnet. Then the fluid is good to go for 100k unless you do a lot of towing/hauling then I would change out at 50k miles.

Most do not change it out and never have a problem. I just feel better and it is something that is really easy to do.

Thanks for the tip on finding out what size differential you have.

You are correct. It's not difficult to drain with the transfer pump. Just pull a little out and be done with it.

Santa is bringing me a PML diff cover for Christmas! PML says it has approximately .6 quarts over stock capacity. So how much should I fill it up with this new diff cover? Should I just fill it until it starts to run out the fill hole or how much under the fill hole?

I never found a definite answer to the question other than, 2.75 quarts for the 9.5 diff. I filled it up till it seeped out the hole which was right at 3 quarts. If you look at my pics, I only took out just a tick over 2 quarts. The full bottle is 60 ounces. The small one i am guessing is 4 ounces of fluid.

Compare the old cover with the new one...the one ORU cover I ran had the fill hole almost 2 inches higher than OE...that's how they get so much more "capacity".

No this one actually has more space/capacity, for example you would need this cover if you were swapping to 4.10 gears to provide clearance for the larger ring gear.

I think I'll just email PML and see what they say.

Yea, sounds to me like the OEM was under filled in my opinion.

I'm one of those guys who would rather have a little more than a little less. If that's bad or not I don't know. As for the rear diff I don't see how a little more could cause a problem as it would just come out the vent.

Why would you need more room for 4.10s? The ring stays the same size regardless of gear set (in the same differential)...the pinion is a fixed point.

I didn't say that was the way your cover made that difference, only that some do and it's worth checking.

2014 Silverado 1500 with Aftermarket Gears

Yukon Gear tested this PML cover with their 9.5 Duragrip aftermarket carrier. The stock cover requires a spacer or modification because of clearance issues with aftermarket carriers, such as Duragrip. Aftermarket carriers are required when changing to 4.10 or deeper aftermarket gears. The PML cover does not need a spacer. This will benefit customers doing the following:

Adding an aftermarket limited slip carrier to stock gears

Changing gear ratios and using an aftermarket carrier

Read here for more information if you're curious...

That's another reason not to own a 1500...
