2000 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 intake gaskets

A guy a know changed my intake gaskets in my truck. For some reason we have been having a heck of a time trying to get the front passenger side sealing up. It has a surging idle and the rpms increase while spraying starting fluid around the intake. We've had it off like 2 or 3 times and still can't get it to seal up. We also tried 2 different gasket sets. The guying doing it said he's done bunches of intakes of these trucks and has never had a problem with them sealing up until mine of course haha. Any tips or advice? Cracked intake?

 

If we can't get the intake to seal I have an intake from a 06 escalade LQ9 we are going to try.

Sounds like you guys are missing something. Does he have access to a smoke machine? That would be the thing to do next - load it up with smoke to find the leak. It's not in the gaskets, obviously - must be elsewhere.

 

EGR lines from the exhaust manifold are famous for rusting out and causing a massive air leak - just moving all that around could've split it ... and you'd never find it without smoke!

but when we spray starting fluid on the passenger side intake the rpms jump up, We're going check over the EGR tomorrow. If we have to we'll just get rid of the egr and make some block off plates

Use Fel Pro gaskets and follow the torque sequence.

We did all that. Used both the high dollar and the cheaper set of gaskets. Same results.

Could have a busted plastic upper intake manifold.

 

Bottom line is, you really need to beg or borrow a smoke machine, or you'll be yanking your hair out over this one. Confirm 100% that it's the gasket area leaking. If it's leaking with new gaskets, something obviously isn't right. Broken/cracked mating surfaces, leftover gasket material, stripped bolts - any number of things.

I don't think he has a smoke machine.

Wouldn't by us spraying starting fluid where the intake mates on the block on the front passenger side and the rpms rise wouldn't that indicate almost 100% it's an intake gasket? It's leaked with 2 different sets of intake gaskets. The metal and the plastic ones. I'm really thinking the intake has a crack or something in it.

Or it is warped. Also are you following the correct pattern to torque bolts

Well turned out that the egr tube was cracked. So we made a homemade block off plate for the intake and kept the egr plugged in and attached to the header until the block off plates I ordered comes in then we can take the egr off completely.

I figured it was either that, or cracked plastic. Good find!
