Differential locking up

Has anyone had the diff on a 2017 locking with no slip? At times (randomly) the locker engages when it isn't needed...no slip from the drive wheel. Took it to the dealer and they say it's normal. Left side chirps when turning. This happens in 2H.

Haven't noticed it myself. Do you have the little off-road driver info graphic? Does it show when the diff is locked as the fords do?

To clarify my post, fords have manual locking rear differentials to our automatic engagement. In their truck graphic a little locked symbol appears on the axle when you engage the locker. I haven't noticed it on my chevy, but also haven't looked when driving in slippery conditions

There's no light that shows it's engaged. It just does it automatically.

Dealer says everything is normal, driven a lot of miles with trucks with g80's, never had tires chirping or squealing when not on the gas

No, no light if engaged. Chirps like I'm in a sharp turn in 4L.

Just picked it up from the dealer, Service manager says "yeah, mine does that too sometimes". Doesn't sound right or normal to me.

I'm guessing you are accelerating around a corner when it happens, not just rolling. I have the inside tire slip or "chirp" once in a while too. I don't think that's a problem. if you are cornering and accelerating, the inside tire has less weight on it and can slip much easier. That doesn't mean the diff is locked.

G80 locker once engaged backing out at low speed when one rear wheel hit wet grass....slipping wheel locked and I got a bang and chug going forward as the locker released. Once released shouldn't be any chirping from a locked wheel.......made turns with and without power and no chirping. I believe that the locking mechanism is in the wheel hub and they can lock independently so a dragging wheel will chirp differently in left and right turns, more so on a turn opposite the dragging rear wheel.

Never had it engage without slippage of one of the rear wheels.

The locker also disengages at 25 mph.

It happens to me once in a blue moon. The G80 is a very old and solid design. 95% of Chevrolet trucks on the road have them and many many family members of mine have relied on 4x2 GM trucks with G80's as transportation for decades.

Here's an update in case it happens to anyone else...when I had it in, they did a program update that had to do with the transfer case and it's been fine ever since.

The locker in our trucks is a mechanical locker, there is no "update" that can be done to fix any issues with it. The transfer case update may of have been the one that was out for the transfer case slipping into neutral and allow the vehicle to roll backwards. There is nothing in the DIC that will show the locker being locked/unlocked. Ford's shows up as they use a electromechanical locker.

Dealer said my clunking G80 is normal.......I never saw a G80 do this........

Tires can chirp in corners if you're on the gas, especially the junk they've been putting on the new trucks the past few years. Are you also feeling the resistance to the turn too? Cause if it's just the tire noise, it isn't locking.

Mine does this in my 2015 every now and then. I've noticed it does it when turning right when the tire goes over the paint strip for a ccross walk and it did it in a parking lot when I went through a small water puddle and didn't get the whole tire wet. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't duplicate the issue. My thought was maybe one of the speed sensors is at fault and engages the Stabilitrac system?
