Got a towing question for yall.

Before anyone mentions you should have gotten an HD truck, please dont i got my chevy before i ever thought about a travel trailer plus i cant afford to swap out trucks. And it will see about 7pulls a year at best.

How much weight is to much on a half ton, found a trailer that we like but its 11000lbs gvwr but its self contained so it can be less the htich weight worries me of 1,142lbs., that will eat a lot of my payload. Which is 1615lbs?

My tow mods are a air bags, and gonna see if i can get a custom towing tune. I know i got tow haul but i think it could use some extra hp.

The truck is a 16 1500, 5.3 6speed on 3.42s dont think it has max tow package.

How bad will i sag lets say 600-1000lbs of hitch weight? My plan is buy the trailer that shows me i am committed then the mods will follow.

Also what air bags to get i know air lift is the brand i am going with they have a 5k model and a 2k model for my half ton.

But would it be worth it to get a compressor from viair as well? Or keep it simple.

3.42 is not Max Tow Package with the 5.3. 3.73 gears would be, and you wouldn't have a Z71 as both the NHT on LT and LTZ are on the 1LT and 1LTZ (non Z71 trims). Your towing capacity is 9100lbs. You would be WAY over. Time for an HD if you want that trailer, or find a much lighter trailer.

IMO you will be taxing the truck to say the least weight wise. Stopping that combo will be an issue at times.

Without knowing your trucks limits lets just say 9500 - 10000lbs max tow, 11000lbs. plus at least another 1000 or so for gear and water etc. Simply put at least 2000 lbs. over.

The issue to me isn't towing that 7 times a year, it's the safety and wear on the truck. :happysad:

Most people seem to miss the fact that towing that much over is against the law just about everywhere. Not to mention if you do have an "at fault accident" you will be chewed up and spit out in a law suit. I've seen this happen to people just from not having a current inspection sticker even with the correct size truck.

My advice is find a lighter trailer you both like.

You don't have enough brakes to stop that thing. Everybody worries about their engine size for towing. You can get a trailer moving with an undersized engine. But when some jackhole stops for a bunny rabbit in front of you, its like trying to stop a freight train.

...you need an HD. If you can't afford to do that, then you can't afford that trailer

Not to mention everyone else on the road around you. Remember, tow ratings take that into account, too.

That's way too much trailer. The "Tail will be wagging the dog" in this case. I don't care how few times you tow it.

Even IF you somehow manage to not injure anyone, the incremental wear, tear and damage will pay for an HD.

This site needs a category just for all these towing threads - Dudes if you have to ask - U already know the answer - I have a 6.2L NHT on order - and I plan to tow half that weight........

Easy answer...how comfortable would you be if you had your family/kids riding with you and someone in front of you or on the side of you was towing 11,000lbs with a truck rated for 9,000lbs?

Glad i asked I would have been in a world of hurt if i did hit someone. So I should keep my gvwr around 10k. Max? But 9k is what i can tow safely? Hopefully i can find a decent optioned trailer for that amount. It may end up being my home if something ever happens.
