How big is the gas tank?

Just got a 2017 GMC Sierra Crew Cab Texas Edition SLE with the 5.3 V8. I have gone through my first tank of gas. I am curious what the fuel capacity the tank is. I drove until the gas light came on and the fuel range read 29 miles left. I thought the tank was 26 gallons but when I filled up it was "topped off" at 21.36 gallons. This leads me to believe it is only a 22 gallon tank. Hope this is not a dumb question. I am just curious. The bed is the 5.8ft.

Yep 26 gal on all 1500 models.

 

I think the regular cab 8 foot bed has option for larger tank.

I'm sorry you got your feelings hurt. The answer is pretty obvious when you look at your manual. You have a 1500. That leaves you two choices. You have a short box according to your own description, which will whittle you down to one answer. Also a 22 gal tank is not even an option according to the chart. The safety margin is about 3 or so gallons for the light to be lit

 

A wealth of info about your vehicle is available in the owners manual You can have answers much quicker than waiting on a forum response

Good to be here thanks. Had a 92 chevy SWB sikverado back in 92 then switched to a titan in 2004 and bought another titan in 2014. I put a 6 inch fab tech lift and all the other goodies that go with that and then had issues with rupturing brake lines during hard braking, so I had to cut her loose. Did not feel like exploring anymore steel braided brake line brands, so in the interest of safety i got into this 2017 GMC a few weeks ago. Hopefully she will give me 10-12 good years of service and then I can just keep it and pass it on to a family member.

I ran mine the other day down to ~50 miles according to the computer and the light had just gone on and it still only took 22 gallons. So at around 15 mpg (low because of cold/winter weather) so that's about right.

I have found you can put another 2-3 gallons in after the first auto-shutoff and get 24 or 25 gallons total on a fill up. I do not do this regularly as it might cause issues with the evap loss system, but I was curious how much it would really take. Now I usually fill up with about 1/8 showing, but before the light is on, and can put in just over 20 gallons which is $50 at current prices.

Just saying this happens to me all the time. It is honestly just the Internet. It is impossible to actually interpret how someone meant something to come off solely through text. I cannot tell you how many times I have started off "No, you do not use" etc etc and I went back and read how someone could take it offensively. When in fact I 100% had no intentions for it to come off like that. I just meant it as a statement to tell the user no lol. 

 

So anyway, many of you know I just bought a new 2017 GMC Sierra (new to me anyway) and it is a regular cab. I am trying to figure out what gas tank I have. I have already done a lot of research and figured out that I have either a 26 gallon that comes standard on them or I could have an extended one that only regular cab 1500's can have. I thought looking at my service parts identifier would be my best bet, but I cannot find any designation for my fuel capacity. It looks like a lot of the fuel tanks start with designations of "NE#" (replace the hash with a number". I have "NE8" for mine. However, on the general motors code list "NE8" is the only one missing. I am guessing this is because I have a 34 gallon? I think that is what it is. 

 

I was certain I could figure it out at the pump by doing the math. However, I was told that could be misleading as well because of how much surplus these tanks can hold, especially beyond empty. That might have even been mentioned here. Not sure if the right thing to do was to revive a thread over two years old but eh...

Reg cab long bed can have the 36 Gal I believe in the 1500. Which pisses me off personally. I have a CC 6.5’ bed nht and only a 26 Gal tank. If you build a max towing package it should have the big tank. The 2500 gas engine trucks get the big tank. Same dimension body.   Lucky to get 200 miles while towing blows.

I could be wrong but I think it is only 26 gallon and 34 gallon for the 1500's and of course the only option for the 34 gallon is the long bed. My manual says that long beds have the 34 gallon by default but was told that long beds can also have the 26 gallon option. I am planning to do a good bit of towing with this truck too. So I am hoping that it does have the 34 gallon. 

 

Isn't there a regulation now that says motor vehicles have to get at least 300 or 400 miles per tank of gas? I realize that it probably does not count when the vehicle is under load like towing. I was just curious.
