Tire Brands/Models to Avoid

I'll be looking @ replacement M/T or A/T tires in the next year. On another thread a member posted about a set of Cepek Mud Countrys that wouldnt balance. Not sure if this was a isolated issue or common w/ this tire.

 

Ive had experience w/ Kumho's Mud Kings which sucked for tire wear when compared to the original BFG M/Ts. Ive read other people say to avoid any Kumhos unless selling the vehicle.

 

Also you hear of a lot of 'off brands', I would think they would be best avoided unless shopping strictly on price.

 

Any other comments?

Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac are nice. They can be a bit stubborn on balancing though, but are a nice hybrid AT/MT type tire and are killer in the snow. As for something more commercial, I am a big fan of the Firestone TransForce AT, which is an alternative to the OEM Bridgestone Duravis. The Hankook Dynapro ATM is a nice AT tire, as well as the Bridgestone Dueler Revo AT2.

It can happen to any brand...I bought a set of 315x70x17s LR D for my Dodge 2500, they were an inch out of round in 4000 miles and BFG would not stand behind them. Ended up selling them to a guy with an offroad buggy at a heck of a loss.

 

My Cooper's seem ok...Bridgestone, eh...

In my eyes mud tires are mud tires there all the same noisy hard to balance and wear like shit. They do make bags that you can throw in the tires when mounted slap right on truck and drive they will vibrate at first but will balance the tires out them selves. I bought a set of 33" off brand tires for my truck at $620 for all four have yet to have a problem. Great in snow great in mud balanced half way decent noisy but for the price can't beat it they do there job and they were cheap. I will be putting them on again when it's time to replace them.

Not a fan of Duratracs at all. Had them briefly and returned them. It's a very good looking tire but wears quickly and handles like a greasy turd. I avoid General Grabber A/To because of low steering traction characteristics in snow . Also BF Goodrich Rugged Terrain because they only look nice but traction sucks.

Looking for a more agressive tire to replace the Transforce ATs that are on my '17. The '2 track' thru our woodlot gets greasy/slimy when it's wet (spring & fall). I had the Dura-tracs on my '11 when I sold it.

 

I'm trying to stay away from a 'closed' tread that turns into a chocolate covered donut @ the sight of mud.

Back in the early 80s.

 

Other than the Kumhos, I ran several sets of the 'old style BFG M/Ts up until around '08 or '09. So I'm well aware of tire noise.

 

I didn't like the new KO2 tread pattern. In fact as often I had seen the M/Ts in the past, I've hardly noticed any in use since the tread change.

 

The young lad that has my old '04 has a set of Deegans on the truck. I'll have to ask him how they are standing up.

 

Around the nearest city I've noticed Toyo Mud Countrys, Mickey Thompson ATZs & MTZs on several trucks in the parking lots.

 

Any pros or cons on the listed tires?

i just ordered the nitto exo grappler for my hd. hope to here by the weekend i wanted something a little more aggressive but not quite a mud tire

The mechanics in our shop call Good Year tires "Good for one Year"! ahaha I have never had bad luck with them. Right now every vehicle I own except for my motorcycle has them on it!

 

The most favorite tire I have ever owned are Toyo AT Open Country, but on my company trucks I had a few sets of Bridgestone Duelers that I got 80,000km with.

 

Personally I would be willing to try anything but probably would not actually shop for Firestone or Hankook! And I can't really tell you why???????

Toyo Open Country MT's and Nitto Trail Grappler MT's are very popular around here. They're quite aggressive, but aren't terrible on the road, like a Nitto Mud Grappler or Super Swamper type mud tire. My buddy has Cooper ST Maxx on his older HD. He's used to running AT's, so he thinks they're a bit noisy, but he loves the added traction (and puncture resistance) when going back in the fields to cut firewood. I'm very happy with my Falken AT3W's, but I don't get into any mud to speak of. A few slippery farm lanes during hunting season is about the limit for me, haha.
