Hey all. I am new to the forum with a 2015 Sierra 1/2 ton. I installed a cat back MBRP system and love it. Except when in V4 mode. I knew this before the install and plan on picking up a Range AFM if I can find a cheaper used one. Until then I am driving in M5 mode unless above 60mph.

 

Will this do any long term damage? I have not been shifting with the button and have let the computer shift for me if that makes sense. I start off in M5 and let it do its thing. What are people's thoughts?

 

Anyone have a used Range?

Dexter welcome to the forum. In short there is no harm that will occur if you drive in M5 your valve lifters may last longer as well.

this is exactly what a lot of ppl on here do that dont want to disable afm due to warranty. havent heard about any negative consequences as of yet

Been running in M7 for the break-in period. At 300 miles now.........

Huh? Do you mean lifters? Or are you talking about push rods valve springs? How will they last longer when you are running at a higher RPM constantly?

 

Always love reading these debates about V4 mode...

You've been around awhile I can tell by your sig. By the way I had a 70 MD special SST Javalin. That and many of my early 70s-80s rides lived at 3K cruising the freeways. Running M5 wouldn't hurt anything, except fuel mileage.

Haha you're right. I meant the lifters don't know why I mentioned valve. Anyhow no worries.

I will never use a Range device again. Always had issues with them and dont dare to put it on my 2016. I drive in M7 since I got the truck with 60 miles and now have over 15xx. Only time I hit M8 is when I get on the highway.

I live in an area with lots of steep hills and stop and go traffic. If I leave my truck in D, it always tries to shift all the way up to 6th, causing the engine to bog, then the transmission starts hunting, and by the time it goes into the right gear, I have to slow down due to traffic or stop for a red light. By leaving the truck in M5 or M4, it drives a bit better for me. I can't see any reason why this can hurt. If the transmission is shifting less, it will probably last longer.

Wow. Thanks for all the replies. I do feel it drives better in M5 and always shift up to M6 once I am above 2,500ish RPMs.

 

The MBRP sounds amazing. I will try to post a cold start vid

Nah. I have had other reasons than AFM to run in manual mode and select M5 in both my 2013 1500 and now my 2015 2500. Mostly to eliminate a lot of gear hunting and shifting on the rural two lane roads and such that my pickups spend most of their time on. In all those years, if it was going to be a problem it would have shown up. It is easier on the transmission to not be constantly shifting all over the place on every little mole hill. Running in M5 solves that issue and shifts are reduced considerably.

 

On the 2013, I eventually got the Range AFM disabler for road trip use to keep it out of 4 cyl mode. My reasoning was based more on principle than anything else. I am an old Cavalry Sergeant, and I expect everyone to pack the gear... no slackers. I paid for 8 cylinders, and I was not inclined to have any of them take government or union inspired smoke breaks while the others were having to work. It wasn't like GM gave me a choice of having a non AFM engine, so I compensated accordingly. And while some don't notice it, I defiantly noticed the lag when the ECM was taking the engine out of 4 cyl back to 8 cyl mode. That has all been solved now with the 6.0 in my 2500. None of that stupid AFM stuff. But I still use manual mode and M5 frequently.

I read what others have said but I am curious as to why you don't like your truck in V4 mode? You should only notice the change by the indicator in your DIC. Your truck has an abundant amount of power and it makes sense to reduce use when the need isn't there. I believe there is some stigma associated with running in V4 when we paid for a V8. I still feel the same way about driving a truck with an automatic transmission! If you're noticing any lack of responsiveness or power as a result of the technological advancement of AFM then your vehicle needs service, imo.

    • are there any codes? with lots of rust, perhaps disconnect/clean both sides of the connection/examine cable ends (the wires) for corrosion going into the sheath & replace if necessary/reconnect ALL the power AND ground cables between the battery, engine, frame, cab, fuse box and starter charm.li (website) has a no-start diagnostic procedure you can work through to get it working.
    • Its no wonder you've gravitated to the oil types and brands you have in later years after trying certain brands and one being a specialty oil or at least very hard to come by up here and the other would have been a commonly found oil of the era and the vastly different outcomes as a result to using the vehicles in question the same distance for an OCI . It shows what marketing hype can do without actually having the product to back up the claims and that is no different now with the insane claims that are written on the side of a bottle of oil from some of the off the shelf oils.    What has surprised me and I was already finding this out before I bought my truck with the GDI engine, that this newer fancy technology that seemingly would suggest better fuel economy/emissions with this high pressure spray of fuel is not in reality kind at all to the engine or at least the oils life. Yet they insist on claiming long OCI with this technology just like they did with the port or similar type fuel injection systems when in reality its a step back in oil life to have a GDI system.    I think the mistake your making Grumpy is that your not sending your samples to Blackstone and getting the feel good glowing report that you can run it another 1000 or more miles and then send another sample where they say run it yet another 1000 miles and on and on it goes until your sending in something that looks a lot like road tar and then they may suggest you change your oil within the next 1000 miles 😆
    • I am guessing that engines of that design back then had a better ability to be abused and survive longer than a new design engine with the long timing chain and the overhead cams and phasers etc. But I would never guess that an engine could go that far and not fail spectacularly or at least die a slow death. 
    • In the 80's 90's I'd run Honda's 7,500 miles between changes using Red Line HP 5W20 and do it for hundreds of thousands of miles with issues. Back in the day it was an SAE 20 with the HTHS of a SAE 30 and SN add load. It was also very polar. Oxidation VOA was over 120. Besides those motors were SPFI and lean burn tech. I could have likely run it longer but never did.    We had a Toyota bought new I ran on Pennzoil's latest and greatest synthetic of the day with "Penthane". A made up word for a very low dose of PAO. Tried 7,500 mile OCI's in that Group III/VI chemistry and the rings tapped out at 90K. Rocker box wasn't as bad as the one Punch put up but it wasn't good either. Also a SPFI motor.    I'm around 3,750 across the board on these GDI monsters and the oil it tapped out by then usually on TBN/TAN crossover and color. Red Line HP Euro.    The AMSOIL SS brochures tell you to follow the OEM values for the service class but that it can be run up to 25K if monitored. I can't imagine what motor could go that distance and not tap out. I've never owned one.    Yes, I know. Lot's of people do. I'm just not going to be one of them. 
    • I knew a guy in the early 80's that bought a new Monte Carlo and ran it a 100,000 miles without ever changing the filter or the oil. Just kept adding. It looked like that inside.
