Who Is Running Goodyear Wrangled Duratrac Tires

Recommended Posts

I had a pair of mud tires back in the day and said never again. The midnight edition rims have been calling my name. After all the good reviews about the Goodyear wrangler duratrac tires being quiet and the fact Chevy put them on trucks led me too believe they would be just a tad louder than normal tires. Which I was ok with. So now that the midnight edition rims are on my truck, and I've put 100 miles in them.......

I'm not going to lie they are quite a bit louder than I had hoped for. Will these tires get any quieter once they get a few hundred miles? I was hoping to sell my gm 22s and just run the 18 inch midnight edition rims full time. Now I am not so sure. I might just run the duratrac tires for a few winter months and the 22s the rest if the year.

The duratrac tires look so damn awesome though. What say you?0183a601e09c8ce0342bc18621b74dfd.jpg

I had them for 35,000 miles on my previous truck, which was a 2014 Silverado Double Cab V6, they were quite at first, then got louder and louder and louder and...well you get the point.

Switched to BFG KO2's on my new 2016 Silverado Crew Cab V8 and they have about 15,000 miles on them so far, no increase in noise, better grip, however slightly heavier tire.

Would I buy the Duratracs again? No, they weren't all that great considering I bought them because of the amazing tirerack reviews, dunno...Just not that impressed.

Better than stock most definitely, but there are better choices.

I have about 25000 miles on mine. Next time I'm going back to BFG All Terrains like I wanted when I bought the Duratracs.

I feel the BFG I had in the past were better on snow, dirt, and ice, and wore about the same, maybe a tad faster than the Duratracs. I tried them based also on Tire rack and other reviews, and price.

I have had two sets of Duratracs on my truck. I love them! I find them to be very quiet and have been fantastic in the snow, rain (we get lots of it!), and dry roads. Haven't really had them off road though. Anyways, I am extremely happy with them.

I did exactly the same thing. Truck came with 22s, but I bought a set of All Terrain X wheels for off road and winter. I missed the handling and quietness of the 22s. I'm not a fan of the noise at all. I'll probably go with Dueler AT Revos next time as they aren't as loud and handle well on highway.

The duratracs do not get quieter. Mine have 6000 miles on them and ready for a rotation. Getting louder.

Great tires though, loved them in our heavy winter this year. Expensive though, looks cool, tough choice what to try next.

So that is 1 yes and 3 no. I don't know why I always forget to ask about things like this before I buy them.

Did you use the lug nuts from the 22s on your altX rims? That's what I did but they seem too small in diameter at the base. I can see a small amount of area that isn't painted black.

Did you notice a difference in mpg between the 22 and duratrac? The duratrac are actually 12 pounds lighter per tire/rim on my scale

Yeah they definitely get louder with more miles. I'm at 25k now and will be upgrading at 35-40k.

But as everyone else already said, BFG KO2 is where it's at for an all terrain tire that's actually quiet.

I personally love the duratracs. Was a little loud at first but gets quieter if you ask me... I have 21k miles on them

Duratracs 44,000 miles no problem with noise . rotate at every oil change

About 6,000 miles on my Duratracs and no increase in noise. I'll be rotating them in a week or two but I really like these tires after riding on those slippery SRA's the truck came with.

I had them on the 2014 they were a bit noisy but coming from the SR\A's they were a vast improvement.

I'm going to hunt down a set of rims for my 2016 and probably put another set of Duratrac's on those and run them through Hunting season :) I mean winter.

I was shocked at how well these 22 did I expected them to be worse. Only real issues were in deep snow but it got through it.

Now the Duratrac's on the 2014 went through pure mud right up to and over the running boards and the truck never even slowed down.

If you are anywhere near western New York I have a set of 17 inch gmc aluminum rims off a 15 sierra.

I use the same lugs that came with the 22's. They're chrome, so they stand out on the 18's that are gloss black, but I think it looks good. No fit issues.

The Duratracs are 15 pounds lighter according to my scale - 89 vs 74. I noticed about 1 mpg loss with the Duratracs which was shocking. I thought I'd get better mileage or the same. I guess they have higher rolling resistance.

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.
    • 10 Ford and Chevy engines proven to reach 300,000 miles   You may note a common 3K OCI on this list of gas motors. I skipped over the diesels. Dh'O.
    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
