Softer shocks?

I see a lot of people like the 5100's, but say they are firm.

I can basically perfectly imagine what they are like. You get a lot more road feedback because they are firmer, but they absorb potholes like a vehicle should and not make it feel like someone just hit your dash with a sledgehammer. That's great and all but what if I want a more luxurious ride that I don't feel the road or the potholes.

I don't tow a lot of weight and I don't have heavy loads in the bed. I came from a tahoe and the suspension was a better fit for me.

So is there any sort of shock options for those that don't mind lowering their towing and hauling weight capabilities?

Don't get me wrong I still want it to have some capability, but I would be absolutely fine with a max tow rating of 7k lbs instead of 11k lbs if that's what it took to have a better ride.

Help us help you. Tell us your tire size, drive train and suspension options.

When on the correct setting, I would not call 5100's firm. Now jack up the front rings and it is a different story.

Unless you have them maxed out on the top lift setting where the spring is pre-loaded. They do ride better in many instances and harsher in others. Either way they aren't a luxury riding shock the OP wants (I have no idea why it is a truck but besides the point).

You want a softer ride, you have to go with a desert running shock like from King, Fox or Icon and change the springs as well (the springs are a big component of the harsher ride because of the added capability they provide.

Best bet IMO, find a nice luxury SUV and a travel trailer if you need a bed once or twice a year. It will have more features, ride better and be better on gas as well.

while you do have a good point, i believe hearing that the rancho shocks that GM uses are crap, harsh ride and don't last long. if the OP has those shocks, then i can see him getting a better ride with something else. aftermarket springs might help too, though i don't think there are any aftermarket springs for this truck...

Anyone run the adjustable Rancho 9000XL shocks and have feedback to offer? Putting them on a soft or softest setting may be ride OP is looking for.
