Gas Mileage Update

I made a trip from my home in Beavercreek, OH to Leesburg, AL......498 miles one way.

 

I've got ~2500 miles on the truck.

 

On the return trip I had ~250+ lbs less in the bed.

 

Mileage to Leesburg - 22.7

Mileage coming home - 23.5

 

I kept the speed around 70

I assume this is what the truck told you and not hand calculated? If so then you probably need to knock 1mpg off of that. Still great gas mileage though!

You're correct....mileage came from the DIC.....I didn't track it manually.

I use the FuelBuddy app, its great for keeping track of mpg and cost per gallon and many more things. I always do manual vs DIC

The best I got with my 4x2 6.2 High Country was 24 down here in flat South Florida.

 

The best I can get with my current rig is 21

I have found the DIC to pretty accurate on longer highway trips. If I fill up and reset the tripometer then drive for 300 miles with no stops with cruise set the entire time, the DIC will usually be less then 0.5 MPG off from actual calculations. I've also found 70 MPH to be a sweet spot for fuel economy. 75 MPH and my economy starts to go down at least 1 MPG usually closer to 2 MPG.

Well, while it is advisable to not rely on the DIC mpg only, they may not be all that far off. I have done many comparisons between DIC and manually calculated and it always seems to be within 1-2 tenths. So I just rely on the DIC now and forget the working it out.

 

I wouldn't complain a bit if I was getting the OP's numbers. But then, the best road trip mpg I have ever gotten is in the 17-18 mpg range on my 2500 6.0L. Not the same vehicle, for sure, but I would be all giddy about getting 22 mpg with mine!

I've got 26k on my truck and manually calculate every fill up. The DIC is routinely just under 1 mpg more optimistic than my calculator.

 

Yes I know it's a truck. I started doing this years ago just as a personal vehicle health diagnosis. Kind of like getting your blood pressure checked Avery few days.

This is pretty good IMO. You have essentially a new version of my 06 Ext cab 4x4 5.3 w/3.42

 

I know the new ones get better mileage than the 06's and this is roughly similar to what I'd expect on a similar trip. The only difference is that I usually set my cruise at around 63-65 mph, depending. The 5-7 mph slower makes for a bit better mileage. The best I've done is about 21.5 mpg on mine for a similar length trip with a mix of flat land and moderate hills.

I usually drive til the truck is a little below half tank then I stop and fill it up.

I use gas buddy fuel logbook for all my vehicles. DIC is always in favour of GM a little bit. Of course it can't account for evaporation or expansion or contraction due to temperature.

 

This is the type of graphs it gives you, These are Canadian gallons but if you go on gasbuddy.com in your area it will be in US gallons in the USA.
