Need Help Fast- 2015 Silverado Misfire K&N filter??

Hey all.

My 2015 Silverado threw a random "flashing Check engine light". I hooked up my scanner to see what it was because it disappeared on me. It was a p0308 (Cylinder 8 misfire). So i scheduled a service at the local dealer.

It was taken to the dealer where he told my wife (I was at work--Military), that the whole engine was misfiring. He said it was from the K&N filter and I should put the OEM one back on their. So he can continue to diagnose the issue.

I am afraid that since i only saw a misfire on number 8 that he will screw me out of my warranty which is protected under law from modifications.

There is no way in Hell that the filter is causing the misfire(s). The truck has 32k miles on it. The only changes to the truck are as follows:

1)Flowmaster "Cat back"

2)3 inch front level only

3)K&N

Can they legally make me put the original filter back on? Can they void my warranty because of it? What are my legal options? Can i contact GM directly about this and how?

I know this may sound crazy, but i have a feeling they are trying to "Get" me for some reason.

Please if someone can help me that would be great.

I would swap a spark plug wire from another cylinder to number 8 and see if the misfire persists. Clear the code and if it reappears something besides the wire is causing your issue. I would put back the OE intake if you are going to take it back to the dealer. Doubt either K&N or a Flowmaster muffler are the cause of your problem. Some dealers are more mod friendly than others but if you have a tune say goodbye to the powertrain warranty. Sorry for your issues.

Good thing i never ever ever never ever never never ever touched the computer. Never modded anything other than what was listed. No tuning, no nothing. I keep it legit, at least until the warranty expires a long time from now.

Filter probably not, MAF soaked with oil is one definite possibility.

You're right that does sound a little crazy.

That's certainly a possibility. K&N filter is famous for this problem. No reason to run one unless you race. Any other filter is perfectly fine for a daily driver. Really no performance gains from just a filter.

I'd replace filter and clean MAF to see it goes away. I'd also check the spark plug wires since there seems to be a recurring problem with them being/coming loose.

Sounds like a loose plug wire if it was flashing. It seems to be a common prob with these trucks. I'd check all of them and see.

That would definitely be my guess, you probably did not just clean and re-oil recently, but that really makes a mess of the MAF sensor and sending CEL's.

So i put on the stock OEM filter set, only took about 20min to do it. I drove it around and it felt different. I think the K&N failed, im just going to stick with the OEM one. I am going to stick with the OEM one from now on.

Like i said OEM I think fixed it, lesson learned i guess.

PUBLIC NOTE DO NOT USE ANY FILTER OTHER THAN OEM.

thanks for the inputs guys.

Also get some MAF cleaner. Its in a aerosol can. Pull your intake tube and spray it to clean off any current oil. If you do use a K and N never soak it with oil just enough to make it orange. Red always seemed to heavy on the oil. I just stick w paper filters now Delco or Fram replace 1 time a year.

Good to hear this solved your problem. If the filter was recently oiled a good possibility exists you put it on too heavy.

OP should just change the filter. Sometimes a non OEM or true equivalent filter can screw up an engine. Some non OEM filters are truly generic and have slight modifications to make them adapt to a variety of vehicles instead of being tailored for one specific brand or engine application.

Replaced the Mopar with a popular brand replacement on a minivan V6 at first 1000 miles and by 3K the bearings on the lower end were burned. Seems the "exact" replacement filter can was almost 1/2" shorter which generally shouldn't matter, but the filter mount had a standpipe almost the length of the filter and that 1/2" screwed up the oil flow through the standpipe and starved the bearings even though it never turned on the idiot light. Brought it in for service and the service manager told me that they had had only had time for a quick look would have to reschedule because two of their lifts were down. And "if" they placed it on a lift and found a non oil OEM filter was installed and likely the cause of the damage there would be a warranty denial.....so "if" I were to bring it in with other than a Mopar filter and engine teardown confirmed damage it would not be covered. Rescheduled and brought back the next day sporting the correct Mopar filter and after teardown they replaced the bearings under warranty.

So maybe the dealer really isn't "out to get" the OP and who cares if they can legally make you replace with an OEM - if he doesn't they could use as a basis for warranty denial.

OP is talking about AIR filter, not OIL filter.

Forgot the x2...I quoted to reinforce your point.

Example was same difference...same goes for the gas filter.....PCV valve......aftermarket tune......or bringing it in with any gizmo attached to the diagnostic port.........any not OEM replacement and it can be used as grounds for a warranty denial....even if you don't swing and the ball wasn't in the strike zone, they are the umpire that calls the strikes.
