22's or 20's ??

What am i sacrificing if I went to 22's vers 20's? One thing I want to avoid is worrying about bent rims from a pothole or a bad ride due to the 22's. I'm about to pull the trigger on a new snowflake wheel / Tire setup and I'm torn. Currently I'm running OEM 17's and I don't want to sacrifice ride very much (if that's at all possible)...

22's likely ride worse than 20's.

20's do ride worse than 18's.

I always thought people were exaggerating, til I replaced my 20's with a set of 18" takeoffs for winter. Yes they are also a different tire, but I was surprised how niticable the ride difference was.

Which reminds me, I should put the 20's back on for summer :)

Only go with 22's if your truck is a "Boulevard Cruiser" like mine. If you're using it for work, off-road, very rough road driving, gravel or dirt roads....... go with 18's or 20's. More rubber = better ride.

My truck will never see anything but asphalt, that's the only reason I have the 22's.

On this 2017 truck the 22 inch factory wheels use a low profile sidewall tire. I can tell a difference from my 2016 with the 20" wheels in the ride quality, it seems a bit more harsh with the 22's. I agree that the 22's are not ideal for any serious offroading and you better be real careful at the mall the parking lot too, those concrete curbs will gouge that rim edge easily with those low profile tires. They do look cool though LOL

If it's street driven then 22s all the way (unless you're running 35"+ then it doesn't matter). On these big sprawling bodies the bigger wheels just seem to fit better imo.

I like the looks of both 20's and 22's. Of the two, I would choose the 22's. However I prefer 17" or 18" wheels on these trucks. Drive-thru's, parking lots, curbs etc. can be tough to negotiate with these large vehicles. Rubbing a tire is easier to get over than the horrible sound of rubbing a rim! Now if I was significantly increasing wheel diameter, as mentioned earlier, then my preference might change!

I have not checked prices but I imagine 22 inch tires are more expensive than 20 inch. I have 18 and 22s on my crew cab for winter summer. You notice the difference in ride but it's mostly when you hit potholes. The tire sidewall is very shallow on 22s so you do have to be careful. I think 20 might be a little more practical than 22 if you can find a rim design you like. Also the 22 inch setup weighs almost 25 pounds more per tire than the stock 17s so you will be carrying an extra 100 lbs everywhere you go.

I have had the 18's, 20's and now 22's all in this new platform on three trucks. There is a slight difference with ride comfort but will add it is with the stock tires. Which are horrible. When I went to a quality tire (Michelin defender) the ride improved so much that there is no downside running up to a 22". My 22's with michelins ride beautiful and better than my old 18's with Goodyears. They are softer, quieter and more compliant. My only complain or criticism is when towing the sidewall is softer and has a little sway. I pump up the the air pressure to the max which pretty much cures this issue. The upside is a better tire 98% of the time. As you go up in rim size a quality tire is critical to performance. I can agree that they are easier to curb and gouge so I never risk it as I found out the hard way on week one!

I decided to go with the 20's because moving from 17's to 22's would be such a drastic difference, I have a feeling it would not be a good experience. The 20's with a 55 aspect ratio I think will be fine. With that said, I came across a set of snowflake OEM GM wheels off a Denali with 275/55r20 Continental Cross Contact LX 20 tires on them that are take offs. They only have 50 miles on them and the cost was $1500 so I grabbed them. I know there are repos out there for the money but you can't beat OEM's for quality by comparison.

I also don't plan on a lift kit but I did get a 2 inch drop kit for the rear to level it out.

I was going to do 22's on my truck (I had stock 18's) but found there was more tire options for the 20's, especially for the look I was going for. I am happy with my 20's for sure.
