After much debate I decided to have my truck regeared from the 3.08s to 4.10s. I have a 2014 CC 4x4 with the 5.3 and towing a 12 ft trailer with my can am maverick knocks me down to 12 mpgs. I will update after it is done and broken in.

What is the approximate cost to regear your 4wd to 4.10s?

Was thinking about going that route myself.

Do you have 35s or stock setup?

what mpg do you think you are going to get? what mpg do you want to get?

I'd be willing to bet you won't gain any mileage, in fact you would lose a little. Your engine will just be running higher RPM's on the highway. (more torque)

I wouldn't spend $2000 to re-gear a truck just to pull a toy a few weekends a year. Pulling that can-am on an open trailer is just creating a ton of drag, and I'm betting you are trying to go 75+ mpg. What is your fuel mileage at the same speed with no trailer?

1. I am doubting I will gain much if any

2. I want more tourqe, it is struggling in tow mode with the light load.

3. i tow more than a few weekends a year. more like 2 or 3 times a month. Also tow other things max load about 6k. I have added airbags and brake controller. At highway speeds normally 19-18.5 on longer trips.

4. You are making a lot of assumptions on what I do or how I drive. I noticed several threads about this topic but few actually doing it. Intially the cost to change was 3.5 to 4 k. Manufactuers have new products and the price has dropped. I will make an assumption people will be interested in how it goes.

Thanks for the info. I am also interested in how it will turn out. your original message seemed to imply you were doing this solely for mpgs. I agree that your current set-up is struggling in the torque department. the sales guy should have told you when you bought it that you won't want to tow with a 3.08.

I just wonder how much money & effort is worth putting into your old truck when you could trade-in and get a new one stock to pull your trailer much better. Plus the new trucks have the 8-sp tranny. Just my 2 cents, but I would shop around and get prices on new trucks with yours as a trade in and compare to what you are thinking about spending here.

either way, good luck.

Thanks.i really like the truck. I debated getting a new one or going back to diesel truck. I oug ht it used with only 9k miles last year. I plan on keeping it and so the upgraded gears will be worth it for me

Also adding a Yukon duragrip limited slip in the rear. Parts ordered and waiting on them to come in.

Was going to ask if you were just planning on running ring gear spacer with the stock 3.08 carrier until I got to the bottom of the thread and saw you added a replacement carrier to the parts list. I really am surprised Yukon (who seems to be taking a lead with the GM 9.5 12 bolt) hasn't stepped forward and added thick ring gear sets in few ratios (ie 3.42, 3.73 & 4.10). FWIW, I recently had to tow my 12' utility trailer with a full load of stone, measured it at the scale on way out at 3050# (just over the limit of single axle with no brakes). Didn't tow real fast or real far but was very surprised at how easy it handled it. Seemed like it just ran in 4th most of the way at the speeds I was traveling.

East coast gear supply has stepped up to the plate on gears for 2014 trucks. The first time I priced changing it was about 3500. Now with the lsd I am going to be under 2500.

Did you price through any other place? 4xheaven and Randy's Ping and Pinion always treated me well.

    • Can you sample the pooled liquid, enough to confirm it is oil?   ...That its not fuel or coolant.   Also, make sure combustion gases aren't entering the cooling system.   Simply put, either oil being pushed up past the rings (this really isn't possible), oil leaking past the head gasket, oil leaking past the valve, oil entering through the intake air path. If none of this is likely - it may not be oil.   What could be likely is the fuel injector leaking down. A puddle of gas would still smoke and rough idle. (Same cylinder has the same problem after injector replacement?)   What is the crank time first thing in the morning, when the puddle would be present? Does it seem like the high pressure fuel pump needs an extra second or two to rebuild the pressure that injector 8 may have let bleed off? Check the fuel pressure via a scanner prior to starting the engine.
    • Good information!  I didn't know about the dementia aspect and asked for a general for my second knee. I'd heard that recovery room time is usually shorter with a general.   The anesthesiologist talked me out of it and I had the spinal.  Inconvenience and/or discomfort is a small price to pay for reduced risk!
    • This is for those over 70 years of age contemplating joint replacement surgery involving general anesthesia. Even some 55 yrs. ago when I took my pharmacology class the dangers of developing dementia in the elderly that had general anesthesia were beginning to be recognized. Over the years there has been some refinement in the cautionary warnings, avoid general anesthesia if possible if you've had close to 10 priors, especially over the age of 70 and/or a family history of dementia. I'm not including the twilight anesthesia induced by propofol often used in cytoscopies or colonscopies. Seriously think about seeing a neurologist and undergo cognitive testing before proceeding if any of those criteria apply to you. Spinal anesthesia may be an option in some cases. I'm in the above camp and although I could use a new right knee, I get fidgety according to a prior orthopedic surgeon when the bone saw spools up or maybe it was the smell of saw blade meeting bone, anyhow I may have one general anesthesia left in me which I will pocket for now and I'm choosing mind over mobility, anyway where did I leave my damn cane!
