Air Conditioning Issue

I'm posting this for my Brother,

 

2010 GMC Sierra Z71 Extended Cab. His A/C recently stopped working. When he presses the button it flashes three times and does nothing.

 

The other day he was able to get it to work but it stopped working again and doesn't know where to start looking.

 

Any Suggestions or common things to look for first?

He has limited knowledge of cars and doesn't have the tools or equipment to read the pressures.

Are you suggesting he take it to a dealer or mechanic?

I had a similar issue on my 05 and it was low coolant and high pressure switch.

No tools, limited knowledge, either invest in the tools or take it to a mechanic. This can't be repaired with WD-40 or duct tape.

Auto AC repair is not all that complicated but will require some investment in specialty tools that cannot be really utilized for any other purpose. The other thing that you would probably want to do is take a night course on refrigeration at your local community college and get a refrigerant handling license so you can use your new skill set and specialty tools on your Home AC etc. No need on wasting it on just auto AC. Heck you might even start up a side business and then make a career out of this.

Thanks For all the input. I was just looking to see if anyone has had similar problems. I will advise him to take it to a Mechanic.

If he has an active Onstar subscription, push the blue button on the rearview mirror and tell them to run a remote diagnostic and tell you if there are any error codes. Or go to a local auto parts store and ask them to scan for the same. Otherwise, see if the radiator coolant level is full (in the reservoir) and the cooling fans are running. Look in the owners manual and check any fuses dealing with the HVAC system. If all of that checks out ok, buy a can of AC Pro or equivalent (with the little pressure gauge) from local auto parts store for $50 (US) and very carefully follow the directions to recharge the 'freon' in the system, as if the refrigerant level is too low, the compressor will not cycle. The AC light blinking 3 times is telling him the computer will not allow the compressor to cycle for some reason--it does the same thing in the wintertime, as the outside temp is too low. You can reset a stuck outside temp sensor by pressing the Recirc and AC buttons on the AC head unit at the same time. If none of that works, take it to the GM dealer and get out your checkbook.
