Advice on buying out my truck

I need some advice. Currently leasing a 2015 Silverado (i did the smart buy originally planning to buy it out at the end of the lease. Its a W/T with the 5.3 4x4. Nice truck. However, I'm a bit disappointed. I love the truck but I can stand this drunk shifting 6 speed trans. I drove the new 8 speed and what a difference. I have a year left in the lease. I really want to upgrade and if I am going to buy a truck this expensive have all the bells and whistles I want, fully loaded with leather etc. That means I would have to trade this one in and start over again on payments. Are you guys with the 14's and 15s keeping your trucks or trading them up for this new 8 speed. Also, my buddy just purchased a 17 with the 6.2. He gets 19.6 mpg and i get 15.1. Doesn't 15.1 seem crazy low? I drive a half hour to and from work everyday. I know its not meant for mpg but that seems excessive. My z06 gets better fuel mileage.

Come on Man, there is no way to justify the cost you just got to make sure you have the cash to do the deal. If you are out there leasing or borrowing money to buy a depreciating asset, you might want to consider a second and maybe a third job until you have the money saved to pay cash.

Remember he's using premium where you only have to use regular so that puts the actual cost per mile closer. Then there's the jump up in price you have to pay just to get the 6.2. Just some food for thought.

Additional food for thought: My 8 speed isn't wonderful. It isn't even really good. Or medium.

I've never experienced a transmission function like this and I've bought/owned many vehicles - trucks - in my years.

Now, got to say, none more comfortable but none with this jerky-ass transmission either.

No panacea in 8 gears. Wait for the 10-speed. Two additional opportunities to get this wrong in my eyes.

Does this help?

I am surprised to hear this. Maybe they should offer a nice shifting well made 6 speed manual transmission in these trucks.

Lease the new one/one you want and that will give you plenty of time to decide if you want it or not.

Why do you lease with the overall intent to buy? That is throwing money away. You might be the first person i've heard say the 8spd shifts smoother than the 6spd.

Howso? I've leased my last two vehicles and bought both out. In each case the lease rate was lower than the finance rate, so it actually saved me money.

Upfront purchase price is lower than lease rate and deposit then the residual purchase price. Unless you plan on buying out the vehicle in cash at the end of term, interest rate for what is now considered a used car is higher than a new car loan.

Ok, that's fair assuming you're taking a high-interest loan to buy out the residual. I bought both of mine out with cash.

Here's the numbers when i bought my truck, bearing in mind this was back in December 2013....i use this because the market has raised proportionally in regards to purchase price of these trucks and lease paymens have risen.

My truck, stickered at $51K, which i negotiated down rather easily to $41K. I took a GM loan out so i could get $1500 cash back. I paid the loan off the next month. Loan APR was 1.9% for 36 months which was the lowest % offered.

The lease terms for the truck for 36 months was $5K down and $460/mo=$21,560 just for the lease

Purchase price at time of lease expiration was $26,420, somtotal purchase price i would have paid would have been $47,980.

Now assuming Ally financial would further negotiate in the price of buyout, i doubt they would knock off $6,890 seeing how a 2014 LTZ Z71 in excellent condition is going for close to $30K easily. This is why its cheaper to buy outright than buying after a lease. Now the loan % for the truck in Dec 2016 which would have been the 36 month lease expiration was 3.9% from my credit union.

Ok, that's fair assuming you're taking a high-interest loan to buy out the residual. I bought both of mine out with cash.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
