Are heat shields necessary?

If they didn't think they were necessary would they have put them on?

May not be a problem though, your call. :happysad:

You don't want to mess with permanently removing heat shields. They serve a very important purpose.

As long as there isn't anything there that will melt....carry on.

2 of the threaded holes were useable, so I decided to just stick it back on. Hopefully it doesn't rattle.

The only thing I would be concerned about would be the spark plug wires, but I think it would be ok removed. Just didn't feel like chancing it. Thanks for the replies[emoji1417]

I know one of the bolts for a heat shield broke off when I was fixing some broken exhaust manifold bolts on my truck, I just bolted it back down with the remaining ones (I think 2?) and it's been fine the last couple of years. Doesn't seem to rattle or make any noise for me.

Under severe usage you will get a tremendous amount of heat and they will glow cherry red... probably just depends on your usage

I think it is safe to say that the shields wouldn't be there if it wasn't absolutely necessary.

The bean-counters at GM would be happy to get rid of them.

But probably charge you even more for "heat resistant spark plug wires", or something like that...

Some of my bolts have broken off so I fished some stainless hose clamps around Mani/shield and snugged down. Maybe not greatest looking for some folks, but works great.

I agree with j-ten, if not needed wouldn't be there.

Way back in the day on here, the popping/tinning sound of the heat shields on top of the cat converter for the GMT-800s was one of the big pet peeves for owners. Many of us took the heat shields off of the cat converters and never had any issues as a result.

Not saying that your truck will go off in flames once you remove a heat shield.

It's more like a preventative measure for liability reasons, I guess.

Think thermal mgt.... whether it's protecting the floor pan of the car or the rubber bits under the hood
