Weirdest new truck feature

Recommended Posts

I got a new truck last week and I found the backseat warning to be especially annoying.  I am past the point in my life where I would be carrying babies so this is a warning that really doesn't apply to me.

So, I get where I am going and turn the engine off with the intention of listening to the end of whatever song I have on, and instead the warning interrupts the song.

Turning the warning off wasn't as easy as I thought it would be.  I wound up calling OnStar who forwarded my call to another help desk.  The menu they told me to call up isn't on my truck.  Kept telling me to call up "Preferences" but I don't have Preferences.  I have "Settings" and "Backseat Warning" doesn't appear unless you've just gotten the backseat warning.  All I can figure is that there is some variation in software versions used.  It took some fiddling around to get the setting right.

I know I am reviving an old thread.  Hope that isn't a violation of protocol.

Salesman turned mine off before I left the lot. Couldn't have been too tough.

Wasn't difficult at all.  Touch the screen twice and it turns it off.  I barely broke a sweat.

It was unnecessarily time consuming because my owner's manual doesn't match the software they have running on my truck, and that is the same resource the Help Desk used to try to help me turn off the feature.

Also, the option of turning off the backseat doesn't always appear.  You have to fiddle with it.  And how to make it appear isn't in the owner's manual.  First world problem.

I notice you didn't turn yours off, the salesman did.  If I had known I had this feature was on my truck the salesman would have turned it off at my request.  Like you say, it isn't tough but the owner's manual and the Help Desk do not help.

He demonstrated and then asked if I wanted it turned off. My point is that car salesmen are often not well versed in a vehicle's features.

You could also throw in indifference.

It has other uses.  Just yesterday I was running errands around town and got home.  Shut off the truck and the the back seat warning went off. I am thinking what?  Then I open the door and see a small bag of perishable groceries on the seat, about $90 worth.  I forgot about it and w/o the reminder I might have left them in the truck.  People just like to complain about the most insignificant things.  Life it too short to get worked up over things like this or no trans dipstick, capless fuel filler etc.

How is this thread still alive!?!? It's so dang easy to turn off if you don't like it. DONE. And we're doomed as humans if you require assistance in figuring out how to turn it off.

I think the point is, give me the options I want and quit forcing big brother "safety" regulations on me...some of us drove trucks with distributor caps, carburetors, and points; I personally own one that never came with seatbelts.

Some of us prefer simplicity over some gadget-laden monstrosity...it's why I bought an upgraded work truck.

Why buy something with a gadget that I will NEVER use...I have bags and other stuff on the backseat, so it would be a useless addition (that only added to the cost of the purchase and padded GM's pocket). It's like having a backup alarm on a bicycle.

Another example of car manufacturers trying to solve everyday human stupidity. Same thing with automatic braking.

automatic braking is nice in one way.

It is able to react faster than you can in an emergency.

Our last SUV had it and it didn't prevent and accident but it was able to react faster than I could.

It was also annoying most of the time. I doesn't know when a vehicle is just slowing down to turn so it would apply brakes even though you know you aren't going to hit them.

I don’t have auto braking in my truck and I’m glad I don’t.

My wife’s Volvo has slammed on the brakes just as you describe.

I don’t care for it, but I guess if it saved my front end just once, I’d probably have a different opinion on it.

When I had my daughter 2 years ago I was afraid of leaving her in the car so I downloaded an app on my phone that alerted me whem the Bluetooth connection to the car disconnected (when you turn the car off). I've never left anything in the car before but with such a huge lifestyle change of one day driving to work solo and then next day having a baby in the back seat, I'd rather not chance it. What's the harm in that? Better be safe than sorry, right? I appreciate GM having such a simple little feature to help new parents, and it can easily be turned off so why is everyone making such a big deal about it?
