I purchased a 2017 GMC 2500 HD Denali Duramax on May 21, 2017. I have driven it less than 8000 miles and have had it in the dealership 4 separate times because the check engine light came on.

 

They did “burn downs”, tightened a cold air pipe to the engine, and reprogramming the computer.

 

After driving more that 250 miles to and from the GM dealership and spending numerous days of my time dealing with this issue, I spoke with the dealership owner. He shared the following information:

 

After speaking with his GM regional representative, he was told that “GM programmed computers on 2017 GMC trucks equipped with the Duramax engine to detect any DEF that didn’t meet the exact same quality specifications as GM DEF”.

 

More plainly stated, GM is essentially forcing 2017 Duramax owners to buy GM DEF or there is a real chance the check engine light will come on and the vehicle could eventually go into shutdown mode.

 

This would clearly pose a problem for everyone that buys DEF from anyone other that GM. I have a motor coach that requires DEF. Farmers and other businesses that own 2017 Duramax equipped trucks, and have other vehicles requiring DEF would also be severely impacted. We buy and store DEF from third party sellers, because it is more convenient and much cheaper than buying DEF from GM.

 

NOTE: A service bulletin has just been released that requires owners to bring their vehicles in to have the computers reprogrammed. This is supposed to reduce the sensitivity related to DEF quality. I had this done to my truck and will do a follow-up post after I add NON GM DEF to my truck.

That pretty much mean that they don't know what's wrong with it or how to fix it. Therefore it must be your fault. As long as the def you're using is fresh, you're good

Regarding the comment about using fresh DEF, I owned a 2014 Duramax and used DEF from AutoZone and SAMS, and had no problems with DEF quality. I used the same DEF I always used in the 2014 Duramax with no problems, but the same DEF causes the check engine light to come on in the 2017 Duramax. As much DEF as these companies sell, it is fresh.

 

The GM Service department says the computer is configured so that it only functions based on GM DEF quality standards. There are so many 2017 Duramax owners have experienced similar problems that it forced GM to issue a service bulletin on the problem. Maybe the fix recommended in the service bulletin will solve the problem.

 

Farmers and other businesses using a DEF by the barrel won't buy from GM because of the price differnece. GM needs to fix the problem.

How wanted to use non GM DEF for the past four years. My 2015 at 98k went to the shop numerous times Finally corrected when the Cat, down pipe, injectors, etc. at the rate one one per week after checking the fuel and DEF was fixed. So I traded it in fear of having to repair it on my nickel next time.

 

Just traveled the country and bought DEF in Utah and Indiana, 21/2 gallons for $23 and change. Using approximately 1 1/4 gal. per thousand it would be nice to use other than GM DEF

 

GM should make all aware of the issues.

From the 2017 Duramax supplemental owners manual:

 

"Locating Diesel Exhaust Fluid
DEF can be purchased at a Chevrolet or GMC dealer.
It can also be purchased at authorized vehicle and truck dealerships.
Additionally, some diesel truck fueling stations or retailers may have DEF for purchase.
For vehicles with an active OnStar® subscription, OnStar can help to locate a DEF retailer."
Seems like def from a truck stop or retailer is ok per the owners manual.

Look at your diesel supplement manual.

 

I call bullshit. I keep all my receipts, so if GM ever tries this bull, they can choke on a bag of dicks.

Not quite.

 

 

Right from the owners manual:

 

GM Diesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF that meets ISO 22241-1 or displays the API DEF certification mark.

 

As long as you have good quality def that meets this cert. you should be good, is what I got out of gm's response.

Recently my DEF Low came on while towing - I added 5 gal of Blue DEF and have had no problems - 5gal for $28.00

I've got 21,000 miles on mine and I've NEVER used GM DEF. I have always got it at the pump at Pilot, every time I have put it in. And I have never, ever seen the CEL, for anything on my truck.

 

5.375 Gallons @ 3,234 miles

5.980 Gallons @ 9,094 miles

5.317 Gallons @ 13,480 miles

5.417 Gallons @ 17,132 miles

This is an ongoing problem that GM can't seem to figure out. There is a 19 page topic on one of the other forums. It has hit me as well. 300 miles and CEL, P20EE code. Some people have successfully lemon-lawed their trucks due to this, others have had many trips to the dealer having sensors replaced, DEF tank drained and flushed, injectors replaced, etc. only to eventually be told by GM corporate that "There is no fix at this time". The "contaminated DEF" was an initial guess but turned out to be false.

 

I'm very closely monitoring that other thread... a lot of nervous people who own trucks that this issue is affecting, on both 2017 and 2018 model years.

I recently took delivery of a 2017 GMC 2500HD Denali with the Duramax. As soon as I hit 300 miles, the CEL came on as well. Judging from the readings in this post, this might not be a fun ride... Fortunately I was just around the corner from the dealer and was able to drop it off immediately. The first tech plugged in a code reader. He didn't give me the code, but said that the sensors are showing as not reading. They admitted the truck into the service cue. I will provide updates on my experience.

jj46 - Can you please hint a tad more as to where that other post that you at referencing is located? Sounds like I'd better get more educated on this.

p.s. I have not even driven enough to add fuel, nor any other fluids such as DEF, to my vehicle.

 

p.s.s. jj46 I believe that I found the lengthy post that you were referring to. Since I am not sure if it is kosher to redirect on this forum, I will refrain from linking.

    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31. Without a doubt at these pressures I am speculating at minimum wise for your truck, it would most certainly ride very different then it did when you were using 55 lb front and rear.     https://www.toyotires.com/media/pxcjubjs/application_of_load_inflation_tables_20200723.pdf
    • Take an automotive stethoscope to the vacuum pump. Iirc those tick as well.
