Interior door handled lights

I have a 2017 Silverado LT Z71, noticed a few days ago that there are lights in the interior door handle pockets. Not very bright, can't see them until I actually put my hand in the pocket. Assume they're LED. Anyone have experience changing these out for brighter ones or different colors? I can't find any info about these.

I'm pretty sure it's just a tiny diode on the back that's glued in place. Take your door panel off and measure it up, couldn't be too hard to do.

Gotta luv it! Manufacturers producing vehicles for over a hundred years without a light on the door handle and people have been able to successfully figure out how to open the door absent a lit handle. GM starts putting them into all their latest gen vehicles - and now a complaint that the light is not bright enough or the wrong color!

I'm all for extra lighting and all that, but this seems like excessive work for something that's not really needed (IMO). The good thing is it's your truck and you can do as you please :) I'd be more inclined to add some floor lighting.

Thomcat, your comment isn't really needed if you think I was complaining. As I said, I didn't even know these little lights were there as I know where my handles are and have never had a hard time finding them. I was asking if anyone had info about these or any experience working on them.

I doubt his comment was directed at you. His observation is general and applies to many new features in our vehicles.

Exactly, and lighted door handles are not the dumbest either!

 

We came a long way from the '50s where only options being "R/H" tube radio and heater....wanted A/C and all you had was a flip the vent window. Haven't had a vehicle stall out in 30 years, no more fluky carbs/accelerator pumps, mechanical chokes, mechanical fuel pumps/vapor locking, distributors/mechanical spark advance or any of the myriad of other parts you had monkey with to start the vehicle or keep you from stalling. Lighted door handles are as useless as the lighted hood ornament of Chief Pontiac's head in the mid 50s.

 

And vehicle lighting is a particular sore point for me - had to use sealed beams until the mid 80's with the output of a bad flashlight and at least a hundred filament bulbs to maintain in the vehicle. I found nirvana when they switched to LEDs in the dash as did anyone that ever tried to crawl under the one piece dashes of the 60s - 70s to change burned bulbs in the speedometer cluster or mechanical HVAC controls only to waste an hour of time and 50 cents worth of band aids to change a 25 cent bulb......then of course a month later another one burns out that is even harder to change. Lighted door handles - a waste of time - but not their dumbest. My absolute favorites were the automatic emptying ash tray in my uncle's Caddy.....close it and a road draft tube sucked out the contents and sumps them onto the roadway - dirtiest but not the dumbest which goes to another short lived option -- dual pressurized liquid tire chain canisters in the trunk which would squirt onto the rear wheels using a dash switch. Stupid AC/Delco canisters even had a can warning not to exceed 120 degrees - damn things would explode and really, really make a sticky mess of the trunk contents.

 

As far a lighted door handles, I'm glad GM didn't put brighter LEDs in the door handles and create a noticeable distraction - saved me from jamming black silicone into the openings.

Back lit door handles are a nice little addition, especially when you drive different vehicles as I use to. I have them in my 96 also and swapped out some LED's and it made them brighter. I say LED's in the interior are a must especially as one ages.

Vehicles have a graphic to indicate on which side the fuel pump should be to the fuel the vehicle, yet a very large percentage of people constantly get it wrong in their own vehicles. It's a Helen Keller world out there...

Wait, do they dim if you dim the dash/radio? Haven't checked on that. At night I dim to the lowest setting. If you had the dim all the way up, can read a book in the cab anyway so should be able to see the handles..

YES -- that's exactly what I was going to say. If you turn your interior light dial up the handle LED's will get brighter (but so will all the other interior lights/screens).

Can't believe I have never noticed that in all my years of driving but then again I have never pulled up on the wrong side of the pump either since I actually make it a point to know where the filler is on any vehicle I drive. I wonder if vehicles with rear fillers have 2 arrows telling people they can pull up on either side of the pump?! (I have a feeling some would still get confused! :D )

 

Can't help in making the door light brighter but I can tell you the door panels are pretty easy to take off.

If a vehicle doesn't have the arrow, the side the gauge is on is also an indicator! Took me a few different vehicles before I noticed it

      You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.

      You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
