Hill descent control

I don't think I will ever tow a trailer down a steep grade off road at less than 31 mph, so I doubt I will ever need it.

Nah, the hill descent control isn’t used for towing that I’m aware of. It only operates to 30mph or something like that. It’s for going down hills while off road.

I have never been able to use the feature.

Edit: I see you found the info. In my opinion, it’s pretty useless. You got the important stuff from the z71 package on your truck.

Straight from the owners manual. I have used it on a steep gravel road, works pretty good when you get over all of the noises that the truck makes using the it.

Hill Descent

Control (HDC)

If equipped, HDC can be used when

driving downhill. It sets and

maintains vehicle speed while

descending a very steep incline in a

forward or reverse gear.

The HDC switch is on the center

stack, below the climate controls.

Press 5 to enable or disable HDC.

Vehicle speed must be below

50 km/h (31 mph).

The HDC light displays on the

instrument cluster when enabled.

HDC can maintain vehicle speeds

between 3 and 22 km/h (2 and

14 mph) on an incline greater than

or equal to a 10% grade. A blinking

HDC light indicates the system is

actively applying the brakes to

maintain vehicle speed.

When HDC is activated, the initial

HDC speed is set to the current

driving speed. It can be increased or

decreased by pressing the +RES or

SET- steering wheel controls or by

applying the accelerator or brake

pedal. This adjusted speed

becomes the new set speed.

HDC will remain enabled between

22 and 60 km/h (14 and 37 mph);

however vehicle speed cannot be

set or maintained in this range.

It will automatically disable if the

vehicle speed is above 80 km/h

(50 mph) or above 60 km/h

(37 mph) for at least 30 seconds. 5

must be pressed again to

re-enable HDC.

When enabled, if the vehicle is at a

speed above 22 km/h (14 mph) and

less than 60 km/h (37 mph), a DIC

message will display. See Vehicle

I wrote that yesterday and wasn't signed in and it got lost LOL......if you like your truck don't worry about it, you aren't missing anything. Not to devalue the feeling of getting mislead about what it was, but as far as the truck you won't miss the HDC. It works totally spotty and I don't trust it, old-school using 4lo is better. I've only used it a handful of times to play with it around Moab, and I offroad quite a bit. It needs to be improved for sure.

The other poster was talking about grade braking, which is often confused with hill descent control. HDC is low speed off road or short icy stretch down a bad driveway or something, grade braking you'll still have and is used when going down a long highway descent type stretch, so that's why it helps when towing. Uses the engine and lower gears to maintain speed instead of frying the brakes.

As it turns out, it's a 1LZ. They even underlined it. I never thought to double check the rpo codes. It has an oem Z71 grill, oem Z71 decals, oem Z71 sill plates, oem Z71 skid plates.

Moral of the story is, if you see wood, it's not a Z71 (2LZ). I still love the truck. I'm really only missing decent control, but honestly how often is it used?

Well there's your answer then. The 1LZ package is not the same as the Z71 so they must have ordered that package then added some of the Z71 "eye candy". Also means you are missing the high-capacity air cleaner, alternator, and maybe the oil and transmission coolers (but the 1LZ package may include some of those).

If it was advertised as a Z71 and you paid for a Z71 I would go back to the dealer and argue. If you like the truck just keep it but try to get them to give you some cash back. As others said the true answer can be found by running the VIN through the GM system. This will tell you EXACTLY what RPO codes the truck was built with.

Still a nice truck -- good luck and enjoy it!

There were some things offered on the 1LZ that weren't available in the 2LZ, abs some things in the 2LZ that weren't available in the 1LZ. From what I can tell, the 2LZ package only changed the base price by $800.00, and most of the 2LZ options are pretty much useless except for the shocks, (rancho shocks are awesome. Had them on my 2001.) and some of the appearance changes are nice. Seriously, plastic skid plates arent going to help much off road.

Anyone with a 2014 ltz Z71 willing to post a picture of their rpo sticker? I went to the dealership to find one and aparently ltz and z71 isn't very common. Lots of ltzs and lots of lt z71s on the lott. I'm just hoping to compare differences.

The thing to me that comes to my mind is the silver painted plastic part that is located under the front bumper above the valence (thing that the front license plate bracket mounts to). LT and below is black, High Country and LTZ is chrome. If it doesn't have this unique part is definitely isn't a Z71. Replacing this thing is a miserable task and I cant see a dealership taking the entire front end off of a truck to replace this just to make it a "Z71". I'd be curious to see if that dealership is selling more of these "faux"" Z71s.

Wonder why they put so much more badging on the silverado z71 then the Sierra? I have a Sierra and other then the z71 4x4 badge on top of front fenders you would not know it.

There are a couple of Sierra Z71s in the parking lot at the plant here. I've noticed two of them that have removed the emblems from the fenders and put the decals on the bed. One of them has a Z71 emblem in the grill. Another one of them has both fender badges and bed decals but it just looks too busy with both if you ask me. The price you pay to drive "Professional Grade"

I suggest going back to the dealer if you believe that you were mislead. You may get some goodwill compensation in service or parts. If this option was critical in your decision to buy this particular truck then legal advice may be a good idea. I believe you will find that there is more responsibility on the purchaser when buying a used vehicle.

I guess so..i looked at 5 chevy dealers for a silverado when buying a truck. I have always had chevy trucks. Stopped at a GMC dealer got my Sierra for for same price as they where wanting for the silverados I looked at. And now that I have it I'm glade I got a Sierra. I would have had to get a pretty high trim in chevy to get what my Sierra has.

    • have you stuck with dealer oil changes since then? I made the same switch after getting tired of crawling around under the truck, but I’ve found some dealers are way better than others about getting you in quickly. Curious if yours has been good about scheduling or if you’ve had to look elsewhere for quicker turnaround.
    • Thank you.   I am set on a 3.0 Duramax as my previous truck with a Ford Ecoboost had just as many, if not more, "common" issues.  Cam phasers, timing chain issues, 10-speed valve body and CDF drum, emissions issues, etc.  So I figured, why not get 2x the fuel mileage (these things got 27+mpg on every mixed city/highway test drive I put them through) and better towing capability with resale value to boot?   My minimum, shortest trip will be 50 miles 1-way and I regularly go out of state with a travel trailer.  I'm planning on using this for a marketing/event promotion business also, which would require regular towing of trailers for bands, DJs, sound and lighting gear, along with my personal camera gear for filming events.   Looked at other trucks in the $30k+ price range but the issues seem to be everywhere, plus too many with gaudy mods.  I'm literally sticking with RWD trucks because they tend to be actually used as trucks, vs. the 4x4 models I've seen with unsafe lifts, huge tires, and general mods that would affect reliability (I'm wondering if some of them were tuned, hence the aggressive throttle response and hard shifting).   So my goal is to find a stock, 3.0 with 1 or 2 owners, in good physical condition, and decently well maintained.  Can't seem to find that up here, everything in the $27-30k range has had multiple owners, smoke smell, issues, or body damage.  Or the ridiculously modified trucks with 80k miles for under $27k but lots of problems...
    • That’s pretty tough Grumpy. I reread the previous few posts. They all reference oil changes. Much like your last thread. In my humble opinion it keeps things interesting.
    • Engine Wear and ISO 4406   1.) Cold Starts. 2.) High Particle Count. 3.) Low operating temperature viscosity and high low temperature cranking viscosity. 4.) Depleted AW, Friction and Acid packages.  5.) They are manufactured within the engine. Both wear debris and amalgamation of degradation products and combustion driven soot (worse in GDI). 2.) They are ingested via intake air. Ever hear the best oil filter is a good air filter? 3.) They are entrained in the fuel. 4.) This one is insidious. They are introduced in 'fresh oil'. 5.) They are introduced during the oil change.   ISO 4406 is the test that measures and quantifies the combine effects of all of the above particle related issues. You can mitigate your way into multiples of engine life by being attentive to them all.    https://www.hyprofiltration.com/blog/is-new-oil-clean   (from the link above)    [Quote] What Is the Recommended ISO 4406 Cleanliness Code for New Oil?   A good upper limit for new oil cleanliness is 16/14/11 (ISO 4406).
