My water pump went out last summer which irreparably damaged my heater core in my '07 GMC Sierra Crew cab 1500. The shop that replaced the water pump just bypassed the heater core. They gave an estimate of $1100/labor to replace it. Being that I live in Alabama, I don't need a heater THAT bad, but it does get pretty miserable some mornings. How hard would it be for me to do the job. I am no mechanic by any means, but am pretty good with tools. I already do a majority of the work on my vehicles myself, I've just never tackled this exactly.

I don't know why this thing has such bad reviews. The only thing I can think of is the people live in Alaska and this thing can't heat fast enough but in South Carolina this thing works great in my truck.

Damaged , do you mean leaking or plugged? If plugged, reverse the water host connections. Even better, hook external water source with some pressure in reverse to backwash it

Care to educate us on how the water pump damaged the heater core? Is this a real shop?

It is a very reputable shop, one of the best here in Birmingham

I would like to know what is actually broken. If you just needed hoses because the plastic pieces broke or what. I have never heard of plastic pieces overheating to the point of melting without messing up the motor and I have been doing this as LONG time lol.

I mean the Plastic pieces that could have broke are only 8$ each and would have been cheaper than bypassing.

Also the Hoses themselves are only $80 for the set.
