Heh i was the idiot that pointed out unplugging the vacuum sensor makes AFM quit working per GM’s tech guidance.......nobody has tried it.....or reported back here.......dont know what other systems it may shut down or effect....torque management......stabyltrak....electronic steering....abs....

Be careful.....Drivin in M5 shuts it down

What I was looking at has 4-6 wires, I didn’t try it yet, got a little squeamish, this weekend could be a good time to find out.

Look on Ebay motors for “5.3 L83 motor”. Pretty amazing so many low mileage complete motors for $1600....between you and me Grumpy Bear I think it would be worthwhile to get one and gut the AFM out of it and replace with non AFM....keep it in the back corner of the garage for the inevitable day its needed. .....cheaper than paying GM to fix an AFM lifter failure.

I was commenting on what people believe. Not taking sides on an issue but I will.

Personally, I like my AFM and believe oil service and driving habits have more to do with it's reliability than it's design. Time will tell. I only have 53K of trouble free to date. (Mobil got 500 K) I also believe reputation is a hard thing to recover. IF GM would have FIXED the issue the first year instead of denying the obvious on the previous motor platform and did right by the customer then the stigma of the issue would not have lingered well past the remedy and attached itself to an all together different motor platform.

Now they are stuck with the stink like a dog that got to close to a skunk and thus my original comment on what people believe. It will take a generation of tomato juice to rid itself of the sour smell it created.

As the last poster also noted, there is no shortage of trolls that like to keep the fires lit.

No issues at all with the V4 ! I wonder out of the people that don't like it, how many are just Trolls !

The issue is real. I've seen many, many pictures of frozen lifters, galled camshafts, and broken valve springs. Some happened at 10k miles!

That's got nothing to do with maintenance - that's GM cheaping out and flat SCREWING all of US!! If not AFM, it's some other system on the trucks, like ball joints, brakes, piston rings, oil pump o-rings, poor plastic interior quality, and the list goes on, and on, and on ....

Here's just one example of what happens with the lifters. When they stick unlocked, you have no compression in those cylinders when it should be in V8 mode. These actually don't appear all that bad physically (although the truck will NOT run right like this) - I've seen pictures of these things completely mangled, with metal shavings and shards everywhere.

Wonderful design!

Thanks for the pics.

I wondered what they looked like but never researched it.

I started a thread about the lifter failures.

But at the same time I have seen many many trucks, including my own and my sons and all the ones the company uses and none of them has problems and the lowest mileage out of all of them are 123k. The point is out of the thousands and thousands sold how many has had problems related only to that and not piss poor maintenance. Also I have seen engines go to shit with 20-30k on some trucks around the area and the AFM been disabled from day one. It's a machine and shit happens

I converted my exhaust to straight pipes from the CATs on back, to the muffler, resonator and flapper is gone.  As a result it sounded like crap in V4 mode and I didn't like the slight "lurchiness" it has when going back and forth.  My dad has AFM on his new Stingray and loves the gas mileage savings, he gets like 30mpg on the interstate...

But our trucks will never slice through the wind like that, so you save what, $10 a week?  The increase in fuel economy isn't that much.  Driving in V8 mode with restraint in your right foot makes more different than anything.

If it also helps stave off potential issues with lifters and oil consumption, great.  I did it for the sound and drive ability, personally.  I went with the Range box so that if I am on the interstate for a long trip I can unplug it, or if I take it to the dealer I can pop it off as well and not worry about warranty issues like you can with a tune.

    • Can ask that about a lot of places.   Holiday sells 91 for $1 over 87 octane. BP 93 is 80 cents. Amoco 93 is 80 cents Kwik Trips is $1.20 for 92 or whatever they have and $1 for the 91.   I know that this is not exactly same as what you are saying with the premium to premium debate of those two stations but why is there such a difference. Top Tier this and that, it's all BS. All the fuel comes from the same damn refinery, so give me a break.
    • Why does Mobil Premium cost 90 cents a gallon more than Shell Premium when their regular offerings are but pennies apart?
    • Was all the way down to $3.69 a gallon but then jumped back to $3.99 just because for some reason.   Diesel floats between $4.80's to $5.10ish a gallon. I even saw Diesel #1 for $6.09 today but nobody in there right mind even buys that in the summer.
    • Mine just keeps lagging or getting stuck on the reverse camera. When I turn off the truck, get out, and close the door it will still stay on. It’s very intermittent and I would not be able to duplicate the issue.
    • I was checking out fuel prices at my farm fuel retailer at their pumps and yes the farm price is a bit lower than the non dyed fuel and was glad to see that the regular farm gas price has dropped a lot from what it had been but what blew me away was the price of diesel as the spread now compared to before the prices went up earlier in the year, diesel was actually slightly lower than gas which was a switch from the theme the last number of years. However that sure isn't the theme lately and definitely not right now. The prices I will post are not from that retailer but just looking at gasbuddy for the main city in this area and instead of posting the lowest price someone found I will list the higher price ( and that may not be the highest price, just whatever someone posted on gasbuddy ).   So regular gas and there are a lot of stations listing the same price for regular is 1.68 a liter, premium 2.00 a liter. Diesel 2.03 a liter for a top price I saw on diesel.   Figures out to 6.36 a us gallon Canadian funds for regular and 7.68 for diesel. With the US exchange rate it would be 4.58 us for regular and 5.53 for diesel.    Thought I would figure that out to get a picture of what it settles out like compared to various US prices and its about the same as the current price in Fairbanks AK as Anchorage tends to be lower. So yes, these would be the prices and higher along the way on the Alaska highway where they know they have a captured market !, for fuel prices for those beginning the long drive back to the lower 48   The problem is our Canadian dollar and going to the states that have the high prices, boy do we pay then !
