I could add other sources and magazines that back the mileage claims by Toyota. But you already made up your mind and have tunnel vision. That’s ok most people do their own research anyway, and as all vehicle ads say you’re mileage may very.

I have had multiple REAL LIFE experiences...you have yet to produce any source...your assumption that I have made up my mind is funny since you are too lazy to produce an actual source...you didn't even quote the article you referenced correctly...

produce facts with sources so I can learn...

Does turning the afm off with a tuner fix these problems or do you need to physically go in the motor and delete stuff?

If you get the tune soon enough, you can kick the can down the road a bit. Failure is inevitable- just a matter of when. Without AFM operating, you extend the time before major engine work is needed.

Best course of action is to replace ALL the valve train components with something non-AFM.

So I just hit 1,000 miles. If I tune obviously I lose warranty. Will I need warranty if I tune the afm out and run a catch can? From the research I’ve done seems like the only thing people would need warranty work done for is the afm and carbon build up due to DI and pcv system.

Your just a barrel of laughs. I’ll just be lazy and not respond to any more of your useless replies.

For miles that low, I'd buy a second computer for the tune, and keep the OE computer for trips to the dealer. They can't deny a warranty claim for a catch can ... but I'd imagine they will try ...

If I pull the factory ecu and get another one with a tune file won’t it still report to onstar that I’m running a different ecu? Truck is a 2018.

Ahh, well I can't help you there - zero experience with anything that new. Never even seen one in person, let alone worked on one!

I would imagine in this day and age, anything you do will be reported through OnStar. If I knew which wire to cut for that spy system, I'd tell you ...

Maybe I just say screw it and tune it then.
You could just go with a Range or Sprint. There is no trace left in the computer that I had it plugged in. I have been using one since end of 2013 and it has never failed. Now one time I left it plugged in when I took it to the dealer and they came to say they had to remove it to do an update but will plug it back in. They said since it doesn't actually reprogram anything then it's has no effect on warranty. There are different options to go with when it comes to the AFM, just depends which one you comfortable with.

Stan, people will believe whatever they wish to believe regardless what the truth is. That shouldn't surprise you.

Look on Ebay motors for “5.3 L83 motor”. Pretty amazing so many low mileage complete motors for $1600....between you and me Grumpy Bear I think it would be worthwhile to get one and gut the AFM out of it and replace with non AFM....keep it in the back corner of the garage for the inevitable day its needed. .....cheaper than paying GM to fix an AFM lifter failure.

don't get butt hurt over a logical comment on the o'l interweb... you asked for opinions...

I was showing that my initial idea was Range, but had developed into unplugging the wire from the brake booster,  so this thread is helping me choose. I don’t and wouldn’t expect any one to read every word of every thread, so I’m fine with his silly comment and yours is cute also. Have a great day.

Heh i was the idiot that pointed out unplugging the vacuum sensor makes AFM quit working per GM’s tech guidance.......nobody has tried it.....or reported back here.......dont know what other systems it may shut down or effect....torque management......stabyltrak....electronic steering....abs....

Be careful.....Drivin in M5 shuts it down

    • Here's the second UOA on my 22 Wrangler with the Ecodiesel. This has 5k miles on AMSOIL Signature Series DEO 5w-40. The first one was dealer installed oil, no clue what it was, the second is what AMSOIL recommended, European FS 5w-40, Most of the Ecodiesel world is showing great results using the European MS 5w-40, I figured I would see how the DEO works. This is using an Ecoguard oil filter. It's my understanding this engine likes to shed aluminum.  We will see. So far I don't think this is too bad.
    • I'm surprised nobody seems to offer a solution like the start/stop device I put in my new truck. Remembers my setting when shutdown. And while it still starts up in start/stop, it stores/evaluates what mode it was in when shut down and will change it whithin a second or 2 of startup. It'd be nice to have something like that for the DRLs.
    • 2015 Sierra 1500 here. Leaks from the sunroof to front driver side and soaks carpet. How do I fix this? Thanks!
    • I will be doing that for sure, but I need to solve who has/ where I can find a bidirectional scan tool that will support OBD 1.5. I'm kicking myself because I ebay'ed a Snap On MT2500 that I didn't think I'd ever need anymore. D'oh!! I'd rather not buy another, so I'll contact a few local shops to see if they have one and how much they'd want to do the procedure. I'd rather have the ability to do it myself... I wish there was a modern tool that could do it all, but I'd have no idea what to buy.   The theory with the pulled timing is that it mimics a rich condition. The delayed spark causes incomplete burn and the O2 sensor picks up low oxygen levels. That's interpreted as a rich condition so the PCM pulls fuel and that shows up in the deeply negative fuel trims.
    • An ultra wealthy man had the most beautiful daughter. But, there was a problem. Everything she touched would melt in her hands. No matter what, Metal, Wood, Stone. Anything she touched would melt. She could not feed herself. Because of this, men were afraid of her. Nobody would dare marry her. Her father was despaired. What could he do to help his daughter? He consulted doctors, scientists and anybody who could solve this problem. Finally one of them said, "If your daughter touches one thing that does not melt in her hands, she will be cured." He was overjoyed and came up with a plan. The next day, he held a competition. Any man who could bring his daughter an object that would not melt in her hands would be given billions of dollars to marry her. Three extremely intelligent and handsome young men took up the challenge. The first brought a very heavy steel rod, But alas, when the she touched it, it completely melted in a matter of seconds. He sadly went away. The second brought a beautiful diamond, knowing diamonds were one of the hardest substance in the world and would not melt. But alas, once she held it in her hand, it melted. He too was sent away disappointed. So now, there was one left He was very nervous & sweating. He approached the daughter & said, “put your hand in my pants pocket and feel what is in there." She did exactly what he asked. She felt something very hard. She held it in her hand, squeezing it as hard as she could. It did not melt & remained extremely hard. Her father was overjoyed. Everybody was overjoyed. She was finally cured. Nothing never, ever melted in her hand again. They married and they both lived happily ever after, raising a wonderful family. Question: What was in the the groom’s pants pocket??? Answer below ↓ M&Ms of course! They melt in your mouth, not in your hand. What on earth were you thinking?
