V4 scares me

Well, we won't know for sure until the new trucks get a few years & miles on them - they're all nice when they're new (unless you were one of the unlucky ones to buy an '09 that burned 2 quarts of oil in 200 miles, right off the showroom floor).

My oil burning is completely unrelated to AFM - it's 100% piston rings. That's just half-assed manufacturing. You'd think after over 100 years of building internal combustion engines, they'd know how to keep crankcase oil OUT of the combustion chamber ...

Did I read where disconnecting a wire on the brake booster would keep it in V8?

Did I also read where the electric vacuum pump can fail and create havoc?

would disconnecting that wire solve both problems without bad side effects elsewhere?

Vacuum pump is belt driven. Failure of it can destroy engine sometimes it has been reported . Have also read disconnect wire at brake booster disables AFM. Downside check engine light stays on they say.

I didn't notice better mpg with it enabled and then I found the posts on here about oil consumption and disabled it. haven't looked back and wont re-enable it unless I get rid of my current truck and the tuner will work on my next truck.

Is there a picture posted of what the plug looks like and it’s location ?

sounds like the OP has made up his mind before asking the question...i think the more appropriate question would have been, '(I) am thinking about getting a range...I've read plenty of reviews, but wanted to get more personal insight..."

just like anything else...millions of GM trucks are sold...and if there are a few thousand issues, you will absolutely be able to find people complaining on the internet.  (probably justifiably so)...but statistically, (not 'countless' articles, because they are countable) what % of vehicles have issues specifically related to AFM; from there anyone can say...well...for a .00025% chance I have one of those trucks, i'm gonna shut mine off...or whatever risk matrix each of us as individuals choose to use (for example, I have had 3 fords, all of which the transmission crapped out well before 100k miles...the newest was a 2004 Explorer, which probably doesn't have a single part in common with the new Fords, but guess what, I won't buy another ford)...

anyway...I had a '08 Silverado 100K miles, no issues whatsoever with the AFM, I now have a '16 with a little over 30k, and again, so far, no issues...

Thanks for the criticism, initially I’m interested in people’s opinions and experience with the Range, now the thread is leaning toward a free bypass method such as disconnecting the wire to the brake booster. If you have no help then I suggest you find a different thread.

hey, stop using all that logic. this is the internet. no place for that here.

seriously, I can't get over how many people read a forum and think every truck has a problem. GM sells around 1,000,000 trucks every year. Thats about 4-5 million of the current generation trucks on the road. of course there are a few hundred or even thousand with any given problem, and they all post on this forum. but having a 0.1% chance of anything going wrong is not worth getting all worried about. Every car from every manufacturer has the same odds of problems.

No vacuum pump on mine. As for disconnecting anything on a modern vehicle, there's going to be unintended consequences of that - anything from the MIL coming on, to ABS no longer working, and the light on (no go if you live where they inspect) for that.

You'd change your thought process if you worked on them for a living.

I get that its all about perception. But you fix a couple trucks a day. Do you not notice the 100 trucks you see on your drive home that are not in the shop? Are you also someone who goes on webMD when you have a cold and end up thinking you have a rare disease? just because something is possible does not make it probable. I try not to worry about such things in life. If my truck develops a problem, I'll deal with it then.

don't get butt hurt over a logical comment on the o'l interweb... you asked for opinions...

My '07 had AFM and towards the end (100k), would burn at least a quart per oil change.  Sometimes closer to 2.  I did go longer on my changes, but it still shouldn't be using oil.  It went through half a quart per change when it had well less than 50k on it.

But I feel good knowing I saved ounces of fuel over the 10 years and 100k miles I had it . . .

My '17 hasn't burned any oil, but I'm at 5k miles.  I'm gonna give it some time before i judge!

    • Can ask that about a lot of places.   Holiday sells 91 for $1 over 87 octane. BP 93 is 80 cents. Amoco 93 is 80 cents Kwik Trips is $1.20 for 92 or whatever they have and $1 for the 91.   I know that this is not exactly same as what you are saying with the premium to premium debate of those two stations but why is there such a difference. Top Tier this and that, it's all BS. All the fuel comes from the same damn refinery, so give me a break.
    • Why does Mobil Premium cost 90 cents a gallon more than Shell Premium when their regular offerings are but pennies apart?
    • Was all the way down to $3.69 a gallon but then jumped back to $3.99 just because for some reason.   Diesel floats between $4.80's to $5.10ish a gallon. I even saw Diesel #1 for $6.09 today but nobody in there right mind even buys that in the summer.
    • Mine just keeps lagging or getting stuck on the reverse camera. When I turn off the truck, get out, and close the door it will still stay on. It’s very intermittent and I would not be able to duplicate the issue.
    • I was checking out fuel prices at my farm fuel retailer at their pumps and yes the farm price is a bit lower than the non dyed fuel and was glad to see that the regular farm gas price has dropped a lot from what it had been but what blew me away was the price of diesel as the spread now compared to before the prices went up earlier in the year, diesel was actually slightly lower than gas which was a switch from the theme the last number of years. However that sure isn't the theme lately and definitely not right now. The prices I will post are not from that retailer but just looking at gasbuddy for the main city in this area and instead of posting the lowest price someone found I will list the higher price ( and that may not be the highest price, just whatever someone posted on gasbuddy ).   So regular gas and there are a lot of stations listing the same price for regular is 1.68 a liter, premium 2.00 a liter. Diesel 2.03 a liter for a top price I saw on diesel.   Figures out to 6.36 a us gallon Canadian funds for regular and 7.68 for diesel. With the US exchange rate it would be 4.58 us for regular and 5.53 for diesel.    Thought I would figure that out to get a picture of what it settles out like compared to various US prices and its about the same as the current price in Fairbanks AK as Anchorage tends to be lower. So yes, these would be the prices and higher along the way on the Alaska highway where they know they have a captured market !, for fuel prices for those beginning the long drive back to the lower 48   The problem is our Canadian dollar and going to the states that have the high prices, boy do we pay then !
