V4 scares me

I've enjoyed the benefits of this feature for the past 8 years.  No reason for you to be frightened, imo.  This is one of those issues that make for a great debate on this forum.

I don't see any reason to disable it unless you modify then it makes sense since it was designed around a stock vehicle.  Our 2016 Burb benefits from it, but we do live in the flat lands of eastern NC.

No issue for me Im on my third Gm truck with v4. My 2010 5.3 with 150,000 on it no issue no oul consumption yes clean oil and not anything thicker than 5/30 I tow 8000 lb car hauler all over  the lower gear rear teally wakes up the v 4. Engages sooner abd stays in longer 2010 5.3 6 spd with 4.11 rear  was perfect v4 stayed engaged way better with 4.11 plus I had a BB tune 

 

my 2017 6.2 8 spd v4 mode works the best of any one so far no goofy in out

Then you misunderstand me. I agree that dirty oil is the main problem. That's owner related, not motor related. The system works just fine.

I’m not understanding why the Range device drains the battery, and wondering how long it takes to be an issue for the battery.

Lots of good info on the Range website.  I've been using the device since last February on 2017 Yukon Denali - no issues with battery.

Draw is in low milliamps - would take months to drain a healthy battery. There's more parasitic draw from all the damn magic boxes these rolling tupperware have in them today.

So I have never had an issue or oil consumption problem on the wife's 2010 ram that has it or 3 of my silverados that each had close to 160k on them. My current 15 silverado has a 6in lift and big tires so it was pointless until I finally put 4.11 gears so I could have the power and not load the powertrain and worry about that instead of AFM, then turned it back on for the longer road trips for gas mileage. Ultimately only time will tell with your truck.

I’ve been using a range since I put on my exhaust. V4 sounded terrible and I was sick of using M5. I don’t have a problem with the concept of AFM. But the more parts you incorporate into an engine, the higher your chances of something failing.

I don't know about the whole AFM debate, but I do know about my 07 AVY that had it. I took the AFM 5.3 aluminum LC9 from 35k to 197k with the V4 mode active. It had oil usage issues from a plugged up drivers side rocker cover PCV labyrinth, leaking oil pan gasket, front and rear mains, and leaking timing cover. I think this motor was supposed to be one with AFM issues, but mine made it to twice the warranty period with the four collapsible lifters intact. Engine was replaced with an LS3, for more power and less leaking.

I'm guessing you removed the flapper valve at the time of your exhaust upgrade.  I installed a FM 40 in place of the stock exhaust, but kept the flapper/resonator.  Although I'm not crazy about the flowmaster's sound, the V4 noise isn't noticeable in my case.  

 

I respect everyone's decision in regard to their upgrades according to their own needs, but I want the gas mileage benefits of the AFM, and am going to base my mod decisions on that idea.  Otherwise, I would have bought a 13 MPG Tundra and never had an issue with reliability.  I'm not saying that to be a smart a.., but the Tundra is a great machine, except for being inefficient.  I'm sure we all had a truck we loved but that drank gas (a 5.9 L Dodge Ram in my case), and year after year it became annoying.  

 

This has been tirelessly debated, but the many posts on the forum have helped me in my mod decisions, and I'm appreciative of that being new to the 5.3 and AFM.

Yes I did a corsa catback system. Sounded like a river tugboat in V4.

It is a known issue for AFM to cause oil consumption.  I disabled mine via Diablo i3 and I am MUCH happier.  Why do people who care so much about gas mileage buy trucks?
