V4 scares me

Quote: "I get that its all about perception. But you fix a couple trucks a day. Do you not notice the 100 trucks you see on your drive home that are not in the shop? Are you also someone who goes on webMD when you have a cold and end up thinking you have a rare disease? just because something is possible does not make it probable. I try not to worry about such things in life. If my truck develops a problem, I'll deal with it then."

Do I sound worried somehow? If my truck breaks, I FIX IT. Like I've been doing since it's been out of warranty.

It's not only me - I see posts from THOUSANDS of professional technicians on professional forums - not Google searches, or posts on GM-Trucks - on these trucks. Now, just to clarify, most of the vehicles being built today are complete junk, but some stand out from the rest ... and GM's GMT900 with the 5.3 is one of them. Not only do I read about it, and see the trucks come in for repairs, I also drive one that exhibits the same issues. No AFM problems .. YET .. but they're coming ...

And just for the record, the new one's aren't having any better track records as far as quality is concerned.

More moving parts more problems, just a reasonable conclusion. The few I’ve had I really didn’t see much of an increase in mileage with it on. Same reason when I was searching for a four cylinder mid sized car. I went with a non turbo. Less moving parts less problems, still get 35 MPH on the freeway. When I want a V8, I want a V-8 no games.

Is that information available to the rest of us?

Dirty, worn out oil is AFMs greatest enemy.

It is?  I have been going 10K on oil changes....this next one looks to be 12K+.....Not had one issue?  It consumes about 200 ml of oil every 10k.....Run your oil it's OK

Depends on what oil you're running. Do 10k miles on Walmarts Tech 2000 oil, or Sunoco, or any other bottom barrel cheap brand, and you'll have issues. Run Amsoil, Royal Purple,  or Mobil 1, and you can do that. It's well documented on automotive repair sites that these engines have no tolerance for lack of maintenance. But, when has any domestic brand? Just the way it's always been. Back in the day, people put more effort into protecting their investments. These days, people just trade 'em in and get another.

I run Amsoil Sig.Series 10w-30 - longest I've ever gone was 9,900 miles. The amount of wear metals in my oil analysis was a bit alarming, so I knocked that back to 7,500. I used to tow quite a bit (cars and trucks on a flatbed), so that could be why.

Last two Brand new vehicles were SuperTech @ 10K heck I got upset when they raised the price years ago now it's around 18.00...."have no tolerance for lack of maintenance"  Really, where? Maintenance is being extended on everything vehicles, appliances heck the NUKE plant down the road.....You should investigate that on prolonging maintenance scares me more than GM continually extending maintenance on vehicles all the time every new generation..

Wow, insightful and very thought out and methodical statement backed by tons of data and scientific evidence. Thank you

OP, anyone with statements like this can be thrown out of the pool for making and weighing an informed decision...

I think he was joking around. Made me laugh, anyway.

Mook, automakers aren't in the business of making your vehicle last forever - their goal is to sell you a new vehicle as often as possible. Are  you really going to trust the owner's manual telling you, you can go 7,500 miles on the cheapest oil on Earth?

I sure hope not ... but, it's your money.

Your engine's days are numbered.  The new oil life monitors are programmed to 7500 miles max.  In my days of running an oil change shop, conventional oil was dead by 5,000 miles.  Just disappears in your hands, no lubricity left.  You or the poor sap who buys your truck is going to be dealing with multiple issues down the road due to dirty, wore out oil.  Wanna buy my waste oil and run it?  It's Mobil One synthetic.

You are welcome. My hundreds of hours of AFM problem research, many weeks that my truck has spent at GM dealers with various problems mostly linked to AFM, many many conversations with GM service techs, service managers, and GM corporate reps, and hundreds of quarts of oil that I’ve had to add to my truck over 8 years make me more than qualified to speak to the subject, Sonny boy, and I don’t give a rats behind if you like it or not!

Those in the know say there are 2 types of AFM engines: those with problems now, and those that will have problems later. You know who told me that?  The service manager at my GM dealer.  No joke. I figure he should know.  He drives a foreign car, by the way . . .

Bret, have you electronically and or mechanically disabled/removed AFM yet from your truck?  If so, what camshaft did you go with?

Electronically removed. First via Range V8 module, later via Hypertech 2.0 programmer. But I waited too long. First troubles around 7k miles, but did not turn off AFM until factory warranty ran out.  By then the rings were stuck and bad lifters scarred the cam.  Still furious over GM stonewalling on the problem and sandbagging on repairs until warranty was up. If I had it all to do over again, I would have had AFM mechanically disabled at the first sign of trouble by having the whole engine rebuilt with new non-GM pistons and rings and an AFM delete kit (including regular LS-style truck cam and all non-AFM lifters from Texas Speed. I used to say the Chevrolet small block V8 was the best engine in the world. Then GM came up with this AFM junk because of CAFE, just to supposedly save on fuel. But many of us didn’t see any decrease in mpg with AFM turned off.

Then why don't you buy a different brand of truck?
