Input requested on Denali

Coming down to the wire on turning in my '15 DC.  I really want a crew cab, not for the passengers but the added space in the cab for just carrying gear.  Seeing a lot of '15 and '16 Denali's coming back in from lease. Absolutely not buying new and not leasing.  Budget is to stay under $40k.  I can get Chevy LTZ's and GMC SLT's for a lot less, but the one big option I want is the 6.2L, doesn't seem to be many of them out there while quite a few Denali's seem to be popping up with the 6.2L.

personally, the extra chrome and magnetic shocks are not worth the sticker price to me, so I'd look for the lower trim with the options you want.

If you have a relationship with a dealer, go talk to them, tell them exactly what you want. They can likely bring a used one to the lot for you with all your options. you may not be able to haggle on price as much, but you can find exactly what you want. Did this for my wife's car and we just had to wait for the next semi to drive over from Michigan.

with the internet now, there's no reason not to get exactly what you want. if you don't rely on the dealer to help you, you can do it yourself, just may have to travel to find it.

Also, do you want the 5'8" or 6'6" box?

To me, the SLT was a much better bang for the buck. There are a few of them out there with the 6.2.

Go for an SLT with a 6.2L. Tell your dealer that’s what you want and they will likely accommodate you. My salesman told me he often has to do a dealer trade to acquire a 6.2 for a sale. The Denali is not worth the extra change for the few extra options that come with it.

I appreciate that you have your mind set on a 6.2.    If you ever come across a used 5.3 max tow (3.73) take it for a test drive.  You may find the difference from your current truck quite extraordinary.  However, I remember when I was searching for the right truck  nobody could talk me into a different drive train.    Good luck with your search.

That depends on what options you want.

Same as the decision to go from base to SLE and from SLE to SLT.

Fair enough. But the OP did not mention wanting an SLE. He also mentioned he wanted a 6.2, which I have never seen on an SLE truck and I don’t believe it is available with SLE trim. And aside from an all digital gauge cluster, fancy seat stitching/piping, different grille, there’s not much that the Denali offers that can’t be had with a well optioned SLT.

Like others have said, if the 6.2 is the main objective, you may be able to find something other than a Denali with that motor. Not sure of the percentage of 6.2 motors installed in the Denali, but there seem to be quite a few without.

If you have to get a Denali, my 2015 has been great. The Magnetic ride is good, but I think my good ride is partially cancelled by the factory 22" low profile tires.

As for the 6.2 I LOVE IT! I have 26k miles on my truck and after the A8 was reprogrammed & flushed, things are great. The average overall gas mileage on the 2nd trip meter that I never reset is 18.5 MPG and I always get about 23MPG on the highway -but I do always run premium.

All I'm trying to say is price them both with the options desired.

Don't compare one with desired options with a randomly optioned one that happens to be on the lot/website the other trim.

And yes, 6.2 is not available on base or SLE trim.

I wish I could break down the numbers on how horrible of decision it would be to buy a slightly used 6.2 for anywhere close to $40k.

Go to laura gmc and buy a new crew cab slt 6.2 for $40k

Also, never ever have a purchase budget.

have a cost of ownership budget.

if a $100k vehicle costs less to own than a $30k vehilce, you should buy the $100k vehicle (usually they don’t cost less to own, just an extreme example to make a point)

your reasoning is true, but I take it that he is just stating he won't look at new ones, only trucks under 40k. If you have a brand new one to sell him for 40, I'm sure he'd look at it. The cheapest new truck at Laura with the 6.2 on their website is $42,000.

yeah they usually have some for $40,xxx.

I also said that deciding on a purchase price is not a wise decision. Deciding on the purchase price is usually a sign someone is fixated on the monthly payment and what they think they can budget every month. It's a lot better to look at what the vehicle is really going to cost long term, and not the check that is written every month.

A brand new 6.2 CC for $42k is still a much better buy than all the 6.2 crew cabs with 30-50k miles for $37-38k that he's probably looking at.

The reason this discrepancy exists is because pricing fluctuates on these trucks so much. People see an msrp of like $52k and then think $40k for a used one is a fair price. People also think they are good ol american iron and 50k miles is just getting broken in, so that makes them more valuable in the used market as well. Also coupled with the fact the blue collar work force, the primary buyer of pickups, is on a percentage basis not that good with money, they won't hesitate to buy at 50k mile vehicle and pay a premium for it.

Also laura's prices are so much cheaper than everywhere else.

I will be buying the '19 from laura as soon as it comes out, then I'll be selling it 2-3 years later to some sucker (but I'll price it fairly according to the used market). Then I'll buy another new one.

I did the math, including the flight, the gas to drive back, even the depreciation on the drive back, wear and tear on the drive back, and the sales tax and you can pretty much own a new truck every 3 years for about $225-$250/month, which is incredible considering you don't need to pay for vehicle repairs and most importantly you get the pleasure of driving a brand new vehicle every 3 years.

I'd like to see anyone try to pay a grand total of $8100-$9000 to own a brand new $41k vehicle with a full bumper to bumper warranty for 3 years, that's like the cost to lease a honda civic.

Infact I just looked it up, a base civic lx lease price special right now is $149/month for 36 months + $2699 due at signing, which is $8,063 total. Yeah I'll take the 420hp luxo truck.

There are some creative funding formulas and advice being offered!  I'd like to  add a spin I adopted many years ago and that was to not purchase based on monthly payments.  If I need to take out a loan, it is as small as possible and short term.  I find a great deal more pride in ownership with a fully paid off SLE than I would with a Denali co-owned with a financial institution.   I went decades driving trucks I never fully owned. I have no regrets and fully respect those choosing or needing to pay monthly.
