After thinking about it, its probably not a true "short".

That whole circuit is basically a giant resistor (as that is what creates the heat to defrost the glass)

So I'm assuming it is pulling a descent amount of current. I bet the true issue is a poor connection in that black box that is causing high resistance. When you are pushing current, you don't want resistance as that in itself will heat up and start to scorch the contacts.

I'd bet money that is what everyone smells before hand. 

Contacts in the black box have too high of resistance and start to scorch, heat up and smoke and that high heat concentrated in that box on the glass is what shatters the glass.

I bet if you held a small torch on the corner of the glass, it would do the exact same thing.

I wish I would have seen this yesterday... :(

 

Just found this after getting a call from my dealer this morning saying they can't find anything so decided to do my own research.

 

Yesterday my wife was driving our 2015 Silverado when she smelled something burning then suddenly heard a loud pop. She thought the truck caught on fire then realized the back drivers side glass had shattered. Of course my first mistake was taking it straight to the dealer.

 

They just called to say they found no evidence of any electrical fire ( I could smell it yesterday when I dropped it off) and can see a point of impact on the glass.( BTW they want $1400 to replace the glass!?!)

 

After reading this I asked them to pull the back seat and check the defroster and wiring etc. (of course for an extra $250). We will see what they come back with. Wish I would have known to contact a GM service Rep first

Wow! Are you paying for that replacement? I thought most insurance will fix it with 0 deductable? Maybe my understanding is incorrect though.

I have not approved the window replacement yet, waiting to see what they find in regards to the defroster etc. I had not thought about the insurance angle. I may look in to it. Thanks!

I contacted GM directly and they said to see the dealership.  I asked specifically for a GM rep but one was not provided.  The dealership I went to was helpful, but then again, my window didn't shatter.  That could've been a way different ball game.

The black box is closer to the passenger rear window but I am seeing all of the driver side rear windows shatter.

I wanted to provide an update. The dealer was not willing to help me out after all and I went the insurance route with safelite. Hopefully installation goes good next week.

Its sad gm gets away with making our insurance pay for it.  Please report to National department of transportation safety, easily done online. The more reports the more serious it gets taken.

U think the insurance companies would  want to investigate but i told mine and they didnt really care. They should sue gm for all the windows they have had to pay to repair, due to GM not helping.

Crazy how it is only the sliding back windows that seem to be affected. Many full back glass windows out there with defroster, yet not hearing any chatter about those exploding.

I'm surprised to find out that the single glass piece cannot be replaced on the sliding glass models. It is a whole assembled unit being replaced on mine. Need to take the back seats out even to access the motor. Hopefully this will solve all my issues.

Finally heard back late Friday, no evidence of smoke or any other damage but found a "point of impact" on the glass. Picking it up tomorrow and will just take it to a glass place myself. Thinking about pulling the seat and looking myself.

May be try contacting the EPA. See if they will Levy a fine against them for trying to blow smoke up your butt.

[emoji23] good one. My wife is pissed. Feels like they are saying she's lying. I've bought 3 new Chevy trucks from this dealer. She holds a grudge. Don't think we are buying from them again

"Point of impact" is the exact thing they said to me too,  Its BS!  It wont let me upload video(too big). But when paused u can clearly see there was no chip or crack in window whatsoever while it was smoking. 

See my earlier replies for more details and photo of burn damage the glass people found.  What dealership? I hope everyone is using Google reviews on maps for bad dealership experiences, Maybe add link to this forum! Tons of people check google reviews.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
