Possible New Owner Looking for Tips

Hey all,

I got rid of my '07 some time ago, and have been driving company vehicles for several years now.  I am looking to get back to a GM for personal use.  Tomorrow morning I'm going to look at a 2014 Sierra SLE 1500 4x4 Crew.  Any thing I should look for besides the dredded shake?  It has 49k miles on it with the 5.3

Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

Checking if she shakes would be on the top of my things to look for. May I ask why you are looking a used Sierra? Price?

Look for the shake, see if the tranny clunks from 2-3 and 1-2 then back down 3-2 and 2-1, ask any and all mods that have been done, and last I would see if the leaf springs clank over bumps (easy fix).

Buying used has inherent risks that are worth taking if you see a significant cost saving.  My experience is that the price of a good,  unmolested late model truck is too close to a discounted new GM.  Talk to a couple of dealerships and see what they can do for you.  I purchased my '15 SLE as a heavily discounted yearend model.  I've enjoyed over 2 years of worry free driving.

Thanks for the input.

I'll also be looking for headlight mod/replacement from the reading that I've done as well.

Used because it's under $25k.

25k seems like a fair price. Look at the carfax to make sure it wasn't a buyback or anything like that.

As others have already stated that sounds pretty cheap...where I am located that is almost one of those "too good to be true" prices. I spent 6 months looking for a new truck, and while I am a little picky when it comes to buying something used (I am an auto technician and I pick everything I look at apart), I could not justify the money saved and take the risk on something used. Truck prices are through the roof right now...I never thought I would buy a brand new truck but for what the dealers are selling them at it didn't really make sense. But for $25k as long as you look it over and don't see any issues, I'd be all over that.

I've been looking for about 8 months too. I'm very picky.  I know what I'm going to look at, and won't settle for less. I think it's almost a too good to be true deal as well.  We shall see.

Oh yeah, cloth heated seats, trailer brake, and a matching cap add to the appeal too.

Thanks again guys!

Sounds like you aware of the headlight issue and the shake possibility. There are a couple of other things that I would budget for if they have not already been taken care of 1. New AC condenser 2. New Shocks 3. Drivers side heated seat repairs and cover replacement. 4. Battery replacement

IMHO I would probably just move on past that 4 year old unit and go over to Laura GMC next time they have a big clearance sale and purchase a 17 or 18 CC 4whl dr at around 22% off MSRP.    Now if your money is tight and they get down under 20k on that 4 year old unit that might be worth pursuing regardless of the possible extra expenses if it drives out well..........

It went very well.  No shake, no chunky shifting, drives very nicely and sounds solid.  No imperfections to speak of as of yet.  Complete service history with one owner.  I'm keeping it for the weekend.  I'm going to take it to a friend's and put it up on the rack to check everything underneath it.

Edit - Found an issue, someone put Rancho shocks on it...ugh.  No fan of Rancho here unless they are 5000's or 9000's.  It has a Bed-Rug installed as well.

Good looking truck and seems like a good deal. It looks like a double cab though, not a crew cab? Also, I believe those Rancho shocks were stock on Z71's. Look for any signs of those leaking, that's been an issue with some.

Nice ride. Rancho's are indeed because it's a Z71. Also, that is a double cab. Should last you many years!

    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
    • Melling I believe is/was the OEM on the lifters who explored this problem some years ago. The white paper they generated on the topic indicated two items of note when I read it. 1.) They only fail on the switch. Prevent the switch, prevent the failure. 2.) The majority fail due to deposits messing up the timing of that switch. Anyway that's what I got from it.    Mine have always been active, 195K+ now, and my oil maintenance is surgically clean.    Of course this assumes good parts. That is no heat treat issue or machining flaws. I get comfortable that these issues are in the rearview mirror by about 30K. IMHO naturally.
    • Yes, the key seems to be with the half tons that if it has the Z71, then it definitely has the two speed. What got me was that the two speed AND the lower geared towing package option could not be chosen together the last few years unless it was mated up to the 6.2. Want the 3.0 duramax and 3.73 tow gears ... nope, can't get the two speed transfer case ( neighbor son realized that after he had bought his used 3.0 half ton .. where the frick is the low range ? ! ).    I am still unsure which truck series, the half ton or the HD truck that the original poster is referring to for sure other than yes his question is in the HD section of this forum but that doesn't guarantee the question got asked in the right section.
